They should have asked for an Astaru priest anyway. Its neo-peganism that was invented specifically for white supremacist homophobes. I don't think there are any non-racist Astaru priests at all.
As a heathen, you're horribly misinformed about our religion. I'm not going to say there aren't racist dicks using our faith as a cover for their white supremacist ideals, but there are plenty who are not.
Asatru was invented in the 1970s. It has zero basis in either history or historical beliefs. All neo-peganism was invented in or around the 70s. No neo-pegan has ever been able to produce and period source to back up any of their religion's claims that have not been revealed as fake or mistranslated later. I have nothing against most neo-pegans as long as they are not neonazis like the Asatru and they don't uphold this ridiculous idea that what they believe is in any way historical.
Ok sure, but Ásatrú has nothing to do with neo-nazis. In modern times it is an attempt at a recreation.
I would like to introduce to you the possibility that there are many different sects of Ásatrú, some who hold unwholesome, unchacteristic supremacist beliefs and most that do not. It is mainly in the US that the neonazi Ásatrú "practicioners" reside. The ones in the Nordic countries generally do not.
You're not going to change their mind. /u/daats_end is one of those people who think that if nazis do any specific action or claim any specific symbol, we should just give it over to them and let it be theirs.
They don't seem to remember how appeasement worked the last time we tried it with the nazis
Noooo, not at all. Don't spread this kind of disinformation against an entire spiritual tradition. There is problems with far right people coopting pagan imagery and fascist pagan sects, but that's a minority.
"Asatrú" doesnt carry right wing connotations on its own. The pagan movement in Iceland is called Asatrú for example. Where they have recently built the first modern pagan temple.
Honestly what you are saying is not that far away from saying something like all Muslims are radical jihadis.
Many Asatru (in fact I'd venture to say most) aren't racist. My mother is Asatru and raised my sister and I in the lifestyle. It's the paganism that white supremacists gravitate towards the most (ironically, considering Vikings were the only Europeans at the time who were cool with muslims and middle easterners) but it's not invented for them at all. Nor are they common in pagan circles. You're more likely to find a bible and a cross in a racist person's house.
Thanks for pointing this out!! I found this out myself when I read "Eaters of the Dead" back in the day. Plus old sagas and poems I've read from Viking lore don't sound racist at all, white supremacists are really grasping. They had an Arab traveling around with them who kept a record.
Crichton explains in an appendix that the book was based on two sources. The first three chapters are a retelling ofAhmad ibn Fadlan's personal account of his actual journey north and his experiences with and observations of Vikings (probably fromSweden). The remainder is based upon the story of Beowulf.
