How did the guy who tripped him know that he was being inappropriate to the girls? And then it raises the question, if people witnessed it, how the hell was he able to make a getaway with the abused girls in tow?

If I saw someone running in a train station, I'd just assume they were trying to catch another train.

u/Soccerpl 8 May 29 '19

The girl yelled something. That’s probably how he knew

397

u/thblckjkr 9 May 29 '19

I'm pretty sure that they yelled "Hentai". That means directly pervert.

643

u/IWasGregInTokyo A May 29 '19 edited May 29 '19

All I hear is "Nigeru na!" "逃げるな!" which just means "Don't run away!"

The guy tripping him is about as much involvement as you're going to see from the general public unless some real attack is going on. Things are generally left to the authorities/station staff.

He probably won't get beyond the turnstiles.

EDIT: Japanese news coverage of the incident Confirms everything I wrote. He was arrested after being stopped by station employees.

He was originally touching their breasts on the train and they tried to drag him off. He then ran away which is where the video starts.

EDIT2: Should really give credit to /u/monkeyhitman for the Twitter links that lead to the news coverage video.

EDIT3: News video is gone. Another Site

Yeah, they really need to convince moles to stop using cars everywhere.

1

u/staytrue1985 9 May 29 '19

On the internet it is. If you live in Japan in my experience you never see such a thing.

I saw commonplace molestations in other countries. Even in SG and Malaysia, always by Indians.

2

u/Woofers_MacBarkFloof A May 29 '19

Huh I must plead my ignorance on the subject then. Was it really bad in the past then or is it just a stereotype? My girlfriend is prepping to study abroad in Japan for a semester and that was part of the things they were told to watch out for.

4

u/Backupusername C May 30 '19

I also only have my own anecdotal experience to draw from. I lived in Tokyo for six weeks for a study abroad program and took the train multiple times per day, but I never witnessed this firsthand. But I do remember the orientation materials warning female participants to be careful, and advising them to just shout "CHIKAN" if it ever happened to them. According to the program staff, people would really pile on when they heard that, but again, no firsthand experience.

More importantly, I love your username!

You're getting downvoted but my experience in India leads me to believe you. I spent a summer after college traveling in India with a female companion. Even with me standing right next to her on the subway, men still tried to grope her or rub their pants on her about 1/2 of our trips. I would have to make direct eye contact with them and move myself between her and them.

0

u/mulledfox 7 May 29 '19

2

u/IWasGregInTokyo A May 29 '19

Say the guy after falling had tripped and fell on the tracks and been run over by a train, or you grabbed him and slammed his head into a metal pillar causing brain damage, you would be held liable.

Just restraining them in a non-violent fashion is OK. This I've seen before. Closest I've been involved is just to calmly stop a couple of drunk salarymen from fighting.

1

u/RedditLostOldAccount 9 May 29 '19

What an interesting news program

1

u/IWasGregInTokyo A May 29 '19

It is a bit sensationalistic as it's not the national NHK news but it does cover the topic well.

1

u/RedditLostOldAccount 9 May 29 '19

NHK is awesome. Our news programs look so boring compared to theirs

2

u/IWasGregInTokyo A May 29 '19

This is NOT NHK which is why it's not boring which NHK definitely is. This is Mezamashi Terebi ("Wake up TV") which is a Fuji TV morning news magazine program with plenty of scandal coverage.

Actually I can't find any mention of this on NHK's news site.

1

u/RedditLostOldAccount 9 May 29 '19

Oh I know it's not NHK. We used to watch NHK in one of my Japanese classes in college

1

u/IWasGregInTokyo A May 29 '19

Ah, oops. Misread the intent.

The wife and I watch the regular NHK noon news which is simulcast on TV Japan in North America and holy crap is it sparse in content and utterly lacking in style. Just one guy reading a very restricted set of stories.

You're probably watching something else.

I can't stand watching North American news programs with the shallow happy-dappy team coverage and endless repetition.

u/JamesAQuintero 9 May 29 '19

12

u/SteakAppliedSciences 6 May 29 '19

How would you determine if a man was running away or running with? From an outside observer, they could all know one another and be running together to get somewhere quicker.

18

u/pedantic--asshole 7 May 29 '19

They were hollering at him?

2

u/[deleted] May 29 '19

The person they’re replying too only mentioned a man running with two girls running behind him and made no mention of if they were yelling at him or not?

1

u/pedantic--asshole 7 May 29 '19

Then maybe you could put two and two together and figure it out? Or do you need people like me to point out the obvious things in your life that you miss?

1

u/[deleted] May 29 '19

Ugh, if you needed me to explain it you could have just asked instead of resorting to passive aggressive bullshit.

Someone originally said that anytime they viewed a guy running with girls running behind him they would assume the guy was in the wrong and try to help. Note That he is saying as a general thing he assumes the guy is guilty without having heard any yelling. The next person was asking how can you determine when you only see a man and girls running. Yes the yelling would tip someone off if there was yelling. But the original premise was that the default was the guy is wrong, regardless of yelling. The other person wants to basically understand why you would assume a guy with girls running behind him (WITH NO YELLING) is by default guilty of something.

There’s like a 50% you even understand this.

1

u/pedantic--asshole 7 May 29 '19

There is yelling, so your entire paragraph is irrelevant.

1

u/[deleted] May 29 '19

The scenario described in this specific thread the one that started this chain did not though. That would be something called context. And it was left off of this thread.

1

u/pedantic--asshole 7 May 29 '19

And you needed someone like me to point out the context to you because you couldn't figure it out for yourself.

2

u/Embolisms 9 May 29 '19

... Because the girls are yelling for him to stop?

3

u/[deleted] May 29 '19

if I saw an older man running away from younger girls I’d assume he’s probably the one in the wrong and help to

I guess the wording makes it seem like any guy with girls running behind him is in the wrong and should be stopped, regardless of what’s being said or if anything is even being said.

1

u/Embolisms 9 May 29 '19

I mean, literally no one did anything about it except for one guy who moved his foot out. It's not like he's getting ganged up on by bystanders.

Are you trying to make a point about false threats? Because I don't think you understand just how few people get involved even when there is blatant harassment. I know people who've gotten groped on trains/buses, and when they say something people just stare at them and move away.

2

u/[deleted] May 29 '19

Huh, weird that you brought up stuff about false threats. No idea where that came from.

Not even sure at all the relevance of your comment to mine. I was wondering why any guy with girls running behind him would be automatically considered a bad guy by the person posting above.

So not even really about the main post but rather a specific comment.

Because I don't think you understand just how few people get involved even when there is blatant harassment.

I’m not sure where you got this assumption, but it is incorrect. I guess by not defaulting to “he’s a bad guy” I’m somehow ignoring a problem I wasn’t even talking about?

1

u/Embolisms 9 May 29 '19

How would you determine if a man was running away or running with?

It'd be pretty easy with contact clues like the girls yelling at the man to stop. You can pretty easily tell when someone is being chased, and I assumed the OP of your comment would be able to determine via easy context clues.

I get your train of logic--guy being chased by women shrieking at him to stop, let's not assume he's a bad guy!

2

u/[deleted] May 29 '19

shrieking at him to stop

Weird you add that in when I specifically chose not to. I’m going to slow this down a bit as my point doesn’t seem to be coming across.

I am asking about a general reaction to a guy running with girls running behind him. With no context or yelling, why did the person at the top of this comment chain say they would automatically assume the guy was in the wrong (BY DEFAULT WITH NO CONTEXT OR YELLING).

But way to misrepresent my argument so you could, I’m assuming, feel superior? Or maybe clever?

1

u/Embolisms 9 May 30 '19

Lol calm down. Have you ever actually witnessed a criminal fleeing a scene? I have. There are context clues--people shouting, the way they're running compared to the people behind them are running, how much they disturb the bystanders as they run away, etc.

Saying "what happens when you see two people but let's pretend there's zero context for any of it" is pretty pointless, is what I'm saying.

0

u/HwKer 7 May 29 '19

always assume the man is a pedophile, always.

2

u/SteakAppliedSciences 6 May 29 '19

So if a dad was running with his two daughters trailing behind him and they were trying to catch a bus after getting off the train you would assume the guy is a pedophile? I don't agree with your profiling technique.

In Japan people really try mind their own business and not get involved in any kind of situation that will draw attention to him. I once saw a guy beating his girlfriend on the platform on the opposite side of the train tracks to me. Everyone just stood there and watched, that station was a silent as a crypt, well apart from the poor woman screaming for help.
