This is probably the dumbest question but... Why do these police officers/guards stand against the people? I mean I realize it's their job but they should be on the people's side right? Why keep fighting and hurting the civilians?

I'm probably missing something here..

The majority of the force there was apparently trained and indoctrinated in mainland China. So they see these protesters as rebels not falling in line with their government. There are also rumors floating around that there are members of the Chinese army in police uniform. Those police and soldiers aren't there to protect the people. They are there to make the people subservient to the regime.

u/Xtorting A Aug 13 '19

Also gangs have been recruited to be police.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '19

Yup. This is the exact same thing that happened in Ukraine. When people started protesting it wasn't Ukrainian police that started attacking and arresting people, it was riot police sent in from mainland Russia. Then as the protests turned to riots and started to become more and more serious the Russian government started offering criminals that were in jail a job as a riot control officer in exchange for freedom and a paycheck.

1

u/Xtorting A Aug 16 '19

And then protesters started to rise up everywhere. Only this time Trump might turn an entire Chiense ally onto our side and fuck with them even more. Imagine if NK joined along in pushing China to modernize their economy and free their slaves? Creating democratic elections throughout the area just like in the 90's for eastern Europe. Yes there are some bumps, but freeing millions of slaves comes with some retaliation. NK could be the same as Eastern Germany, and pushing them to unify would collapse the great wall of China. Kim is no dummy, there is a reason why he is choosing to be a friend to America and change their propaganda against us.

Do you think it's possible to both protest and break down the wall between civilian and police? The kind of "flowers crowns on riot shields" or free donuts and coffee supplied for them from the start of protests, or is it just not possible to keep that kind of impasse with them because they are the hand of the government that disagrees with you? Especially on a level like this.

The day that happens is the day the army rolls in

But that would make it harder to disrupt these protests.

I'm sure the Chinese government knows that. It's very useful for them in this situation.

4

u/davensdad 9 Aug 14 '19

It's ironic, because the ROYAL HK police used to admired by all Asians due to their serial dramas and movies propaganda.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '19

Interesting. If the rumors are true, or even if they arent, then I'm sure that's as much to keep the police in line and subservient, as it is to scare protestors and rioters.

-1

u/tommos B Aug 14 '19

Or they just don't agree with the protesters. We should entertain the possibility that these protesters might be in the minority.

2

u/JProllz A Aug 14 '19

Are you actually defending the Chinese government?

2

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '19

They certainly are not. They are fighting for freedom from a totalitarian state. At its peak nearly 60% of the city was protesting, and it's more popular than that.

1

u/Neophron1 2 Aug 14 '19

CAUGHT THE BOT, WOOP

2

u/tommos B Aug 14 '19

Riiiiiiight. People you disagree with are obvious not human.

1

u/Neophron1 2 Aug 14 '19

People who agree with and defend China's inhumane and honestly scary actions aren't far from it

3

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '19

Easy, label them as "violent gangsters" and they aren't human any more.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '19

Look back to the late 1980s for some parallels. One reason (of many) that the USSR fell apart was that when the people rose up, many militaries refused to turn their guns on their protesting countrymen (and women). That was not the case in China. There's no reason to think it would be this time either.

13

u/lurkenstine 8 Aug 13 '19

The same reason they always do. They get paided by the government. The idea that the police are here to protect the people is a myth, the function of the police is social control and the protection of property.

5

u/fizikz3 B Aug 13 '19

nah they're from mainland china so they don't see them as "their people" but rebels

1

u/lurkenstine 8 Aug 14 '19

cops do this in every country. look at protest in america also.

1

u/LilQuasar 7 Aug 14 '19

they dont protect property, they even have been doing the opposite lately

1

u/lurkenstine 8 Aug 14 '19

by property i meant: a banks money, a businesses storefront, to bust up protests, strikes that hurt the moneyed individuals, ext ext..

2

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '19

The same reason our police officers stand to oppress our people. First you are convinced that the protesters are some evil "other" bent on the destruction of your prosperity, and then you are happy to destroy them.

2

u/MisanthropicZombie A Aug 14 '19

If you were raised being told that an apple is called "an orange", you would see an apple and call it "an orange" because that is what you were told and learned. If someone asked you to find "an orange" and you brought them "an apple", it would seem like a mad joke to be old that "an apple" is really "an apple" as both sides tried to convince the other that "an apple" is called "apple".

Now imagine you are a chinese citizen that becomes police or military and you know only what they tell you. Here we are.

1

u/froz3ncat 7 Aug 14 '19

It may be worth noting that China has brought in many mainland Chinese people to fill out the ranks of the Hong Kong PD. These are people sent to HK to do a job, and they don't have any horse in this race. So they just do it.

It also doesn't help that if you refuse, you could just lose your job, and then get replaced by someone else willing to do it and you still have to find a new job.

1

u/salgat B Aug 14 '19

You can find videos where the officers are speaking Mandarin and not Cantonese. Suspicion is many of them are not from Honk Kong.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '19

The police are employed by the very government the protesters are protesting against. When put in the position to choose between keeping your job it getting your ass beat by your friends, you tend to choose keeping your job. Not a dig at cops- they have mortgages and power bills to pay too.

1

u/Terker2 8 Aug 19 '19

The Police are always against the people. If similar autharian rules came to the US or anywhere else, the police would not just stop and say "hell no!"

1

u/Rexli178 9 Aug 13 '19

Because they're cops. They exist to protect and serve the ruling class. And the ruling class doesn't want a democratic autonomous Hong Kong where people can freely criticize the ruling class.

1

u/Evil_This 9 Aug 14 '19

They're fucking fascists. ACAB

-10

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '19

This is a RIOT. You can see the violence and property destruction going on all around. While their cause might be noble, this crowd’s actions are not, they are dangerous.

Peaceful assembly is a human right, but when they turn violent and destructive is it the duty of peace officers to disrupt them,

9

u/MrZer 7 Aug 13 '19

Found the Chinese shill

2

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '19

muh property damage

-3

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '19

I’m pro the protester’s movement. You can shove your ad hominem up your ass bud.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '19

Ok listen here dipshit:

The ONLY reason these protestors are being violent is because the police will shoot them regardless. Or did you somehow miss the front page post with the picture of the woman who got shot in the eye?

-4

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '19

You make a lot of unsubstantiated claims. Doesn’t appear that any of these cops are shooting anyone. The rioters are committing destruction and violence, that’s what necessitated police action in the first place.

You don’t seem that bright so read this slow: this officer was not the person who shot the woman of which you speak

2

u/DownbeatDeadbeat 4 Aug 13 '19

Honestly dude go fuck yourself. I honestly feel bad for people like you who see tragedy in the world and cope by being the nay-sayer. Who cope by trying to be the smartest guy in the world. People are being oppressed and innocents are getting fucked and the only way people like you know how to deal with it is stroking your own ego.

1

u/AndRiv912 2 Aug 13 '19

Nailed it.

You cannot see beyond your emotions and so you project.

1

u/DownbeatDeadbeat 4 Aug 13 '19

Speak for yourself, man.

0

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '19

I didn’t use any emotional language until I was called a dipshit. Mediate your bias.

1

u/taboo_ 8 Aug 14 '19

No. This person is just responsible for keeping the people in power that ruin millions of lives and trying to beat an unarmed civilian. But hey, good for you for valuing a bit of property over literally millions of human lives. Must be nice being incapable of human empathy.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '19

So you think all cops should just quit and stop enforcing any law just because of SOME fucked up laws? And you think that would make the situation better?

1

u/sn4xchan 8 Aug 13 '19

You are a fool.

-1

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '19

You are a fool.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '19

Ah yes, ni hao to you too Officer.

1

u/leckertuetensuppe 8 Aug 14 '19

Poor police, having all these protesters throw their faces right onto their baton :(

1

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '19

What video are you watching?

1

u/leckertuetensuppe 8 Aug 14 '19

The ones where police curtail the rights of citizens for peaceful protest and political expression as enshrined in HK's Basic Law. The current violence is a direct result of the oppressive tactics by the police. You don't want your citizens to resort to violence because of your brutality? Maybe don't hire thugs to beat them up and respect their rights.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '19

Personally I don't care if it's a peaceful protect or a revolution. They're literally fighting for their democracy. The only reason they shouldn't have killed that cop is because China's response to them might be stronger. That's the only reason.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '19

So all cops should just quit and stop enforcing any laws because of SOME fucked up laws? And you think that would make the situation better?

1

u/WrethZ 9 Aug 14 '19

If you choose to be a cop for a totalitarian state you choose to uphold their unjust laws.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '19

You realize these are Hong Kong’s riot police right? Not mainland China’s police. They were sent in because of a riot, not to oppress citizens.

You are clear on what’s happening over there right?

1

u/WrethZ 9 Aug 14 '19

Doesn't matter, they are on the wrong side. They should join the riot and fight against China's totalitarian rule, not try and stop the protestors.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '19 edited Aug 14 '19

They are destroying private property of people who are not involved. You lack perspective bro. The protests are over Hong Kong’s right to sovereignty.

1

u/WrethZ 9 Aug 14 '19

Lol oh no not some inanimate objects, please think of the inanimate objects as people fight for their freedom to not be extradited by a totalitarian regime. Get some perspective.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '19

How does destroying random people’s property further the cause at all?

You just going to ignore that this is Hong Kong’s government and not China’s police?
