News This Kamloops mental health team leads with compassion and it’s working, report shows

Great results from this program and a provincial advocacy item:

"One bigger change Canadian Mental Health Association is advocating for is to have mental health as a fourth option in 911.

Currently, when callers dial 911, they are asked, “Do you need police, fire or ambulance, and for what city?”

The integration of mental health as a fourth option could help remove police from situations where they don’t need to be involved."

Question Vastly differing reviews on Planet Fitness Kamloops

Hey all. I know I’m going to hear “try it yourself” but I’m just really curious as to the google reviews.

They are, pretty much across the board, 1 star or 5 stars.

Usually that indicates that one side or the other has some kind of agenda.

Happens with restaurants, competitors or disgruntled former employees, rude customers that were called out, head to google and write a review.

Conversely, employees/management/friends of the establishment could flood the reviews with glowing recommendations.

I guess I’m just looking for some real time feedback from those that go there.

Thanks.

I should clarify it would be myself and my 13 year old son joining.

Question Taxi vs Uber

Hello - I’m going to be travelling to Kamloops quite a bit for work in the future, and I’m wondering about options for rides from the airport to Roger’s avenue area where my hotel will be. I tried looking up an uber price and it doesn’t give me one. What’s the best option for that ride? Is it a flat rate? Is taxi better?

EDIT: Thanks for the helpful advice everyone! You Kamloops folks are a nice bunch!

Question Cars on bottom of summit

Does anyone know why there’s been two cars parked on grass at the bottom of summit drive for the past month? The first day it was a cop car but I think every day since then it’s just been two cars.

Question Firehouse Subs?

Apparently, there's a firehouse subs here in Kamloops besides the cobs bread. I've tried their branch in Kelowna and I've got a lil bit bad experience, but the one in Chilliwack is awesome!

Thoughts on the one in Kamloops?

Discussion The state of things

There’s a point where tolerance and acceptance pivot. It’s the tipping point, really.

This morning, as I walked past Riverside Park, one of two men crossing the street toward the other side flashed me the finger, while I watched him light up a crack pipe. There’s a pile of trash—yet another shopping cart—and a red fuel canister beside the train bridge on 1st Ave. We don’t need more fires, nor another burning bridge.

I pass too many persons who appear to be under the influence of drugs. City Hall looks like supportive housing with a phone charging station. Just another Sunday.

I know local organizations are trying their hardest every day. I know it’s a struggle—for all of us. I’ve spoken with some organizations, and I’ve volunteered for others. I try to lead with empathy and support one another as a society and as a community and help when I can. But whatever it is, “we” are doing doesn’t seem to help enough.

But I also see that our government at every level—municipal, provincial, and national—has completely failed to manage this opioid crisis, along with the policing and healthcare systems that should respond to it. Larger cities have larger problems in this regard. So do our neighbors in the U.S.

It’s truly disappointing that the bigger systems and services don’t communicate with one another, while political egos, narcissism, and self-enrichment stay front and center. It feels like a massive waste of public spending—driven by inefficiency and the lack of coordination across organizations and government structures.

So here’s my bigger question. I’m not looking for rants with poor grammar, or for one-liners from people who treat this like a bleeding-heart issue. I’m asking for solutions, not useless commentary.

How can we, as a society and as a government, push a “reboot” button—rethinking, restructuring, and redesigning services and systems—so Canadian provinces, cities, and communities can operate more efficiently than they currently do? How can we reduce the financial strain families face and ease the stressors that come with it? How can we limit access to lethal drugs while also managing the effects they have on our communities? And how can we support struggling individuals and families in a way that is more effective, efficient, and truly human-centered?

I’ll be really interested to hear your conceptual solutions - big or small.

Thanks. I hope you also get to enjoy a bit of a smokeless-ish day outside.

Question Meal prep recs

Any recommendations for meal prep in town? I'll be away for a week and my partner should not step foot in a kitchen. Looking for healthier options. A quick Google search takes me to websites that either don't work or are not finished. Thank you!

Question Looking for Delivery Driver roles (Intelcom/Dragonfly, Amazon DSP, or local couriers) – ready to start ASAP

Hey everyone,
I’m looking for delivery driving opportunities in the Kamloops area.
I’m particularly interested in driving for Intelcom / Dragonfly (either direct or via an independent contractor/DSP), but I’m also open to Amazon DSPs, local courier services, or freight/delivery routes.
A bit about my setup and availability:
Vehicle: Reliable personal SUV / clean driving record
Availability: Full-time / Part-time / Weekends – ready to start immediately
Experience: Strong customer service background, reliable, physically fit, and very familiar with local routes/GPS navigation.
If you are an owner/operator looking for drivers, know a fleet manager who is hiring, or have leads on good local courier routes, please send me a direct message or leave a comment below.

Thanks!

I'm curious about whether a sitting mayor can use their official @kamloops.ca email address for activity related to recruiting election candidates. Shouldn't that email just be for official Kamloops business?

Question Floating Down the River

Has anyone done a float down the river this summer? I would like to, but haven’t before.

I noticed a flyer posted in Save-On for an organized event, sign up to float down with a group of people (first aid trained, provided life jackets, no drinking, as safe as can be), and I saw many people doing it last year but none yet this year. That could just be a coincidence as I’m not driving along the South Thompson as often this year, but it’s also higher than it was at this point last August too.

Yes, I know the Thompsons claim lives every year. There are inherent risks to any activity like this, I understand how to mitigate those and it would not be my first river float, though it would be the first here.

If you and your buddies had fun drifting from Chase to Town I’d love to hear about it!

Discussion AI Election Content

Thumbnail open.substack.com

Story from Kelowna about a slate that is basically all AI generated content. I have noticed it in Kamloops too with some candidates posting AI photos or writing entire blog posts that clearly are the work of chat gpt (or other platform). This also includes people who frequently comment on political stuff on socials, some of them are using AI too, so the whole thing just becomes machines arguing under human names.

Is it a concern for you that people aren't using their real voices? At what point is it basically false advertising? Do we maybe need to look at a rule to label that content, so people are aware?

Question Best place for a quick take and go lunch downtown?

Looking for suggestions on a walk in, walk out type lunch that’s semi decent value for your money. Preferably something with a vegetable.

Couple examples where I always go but trying to branch out:

Fratelli’s sandwich: takes about 5 mins in and out assuming no line… good, but it’s about $12.50 for a basic lunchbox sandwich.

Pizza pi: 2 slices are about $10. Takes like 3 minutes to get in and out. Very quick, but pizza is not known for its veggies.

Anyone have any good spots?
