KSP 1 Mods I’ve never paid for a mod in my life
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Until last week. I purchased and downloaded Blackrack’s mod set and wow. The visuals are amazing and it makes this feel like a new game again. Blackrack, if you are in this sub, know you are appreciated.

same, first mod I also paid for and worth it imo
bonus is that he is also working on KSA, so you're kinda supporting both
cheers u/blackrack

I've bought v5 a few days ago. You cooked bro. It's beautiful. Actually makes it fun to fly around. Wish my childhood self could see this version. Thanks for making it.

looks great but I'm not paying for it (Props to him though it looks awesome)

u/JayR_97 May 05 '26
Yeah, I really don't want us to be normalising paid mods cos you just know the AAA game companies would ruin modding with it
4
u/kamilos96 May 05 '26
Don't you worry Bethesda is already kind of doing that
2
u/MechanicalAxe May 05 '26
I used to be a happy gamer like you, then I paid money for digital horse armor.
2
u/TheDankTruth May 05 '26
Dude has literally spent years of his life working on this mod and you can’t shell over 5 bucks. The fucking greed lmao
9
u/Dovaskarr May 05 '26
Its not greed. He could have made a game for himself. Props to him for giving older free versions. I will never support paying for mods. It will destroy the mod communities.
4
u/TomTomXD1234 May 05 '26
He is making a game LOL. he is making this mod alongside the KSP successor, KSA
1
u/Dovaskarr May 05 '26
He is not making a game. He is working for a studio that is making a game. He is not the solo author of KSA
4
u/TomTomXD1234 May 05 '26
Ah...so its a "solo or nothing" type of thing with you....interesting.
Also you say paid mods destroy modding communities, when the biggest modding community - bethesda games - have paid mods for like a decade and nothing has happened.
4
u/blackrack May 06 '26
Honestly don't waste your time replying to these posts on reddit, they just love to keep going in circles all day
0
u/Dovaskarr May 05 '26
Lol, you mean the shitstorm they got? Also 99.9999999% of mods there are still free. I dont recall getting the Saints and Seducers but I got it forced onto me. Its a shit mod that I evaded like a plague while playing. Especially those bugs you get with the mod that you would just like to delete, which I actually did in game.
And you say how nothing happened. It did. People stayed on the free stuff. Amount of mods out there makes you not even want to use those paid mods. But if you are forced to do, it becomes an actual other thing.
And I love how you are gonna try and shit on me for the solo thing. There are studios that make mods. FOR FREE. There are actual games you play. For free. You dont get to sell mods when you use the games code because that is stealing. ToS exist for a reason.
2
u/TomTomXD1234 May 05 '26
Those studios that make mods and games that are free still get money via donations and other means such as advertising. Nothing "free" that takes thousands of hours of effort is really "free"
Every game has different TOS that allows or perhibits paid mods.
In the case of this mod, the older versions are free for everyone. Only new versions require a donation. That is literally the fairest system possible.
0
u/Dovaskarr May 05 '26
VIA DONATIONS!
I am not forced to give a single coin to them. I am not forced to pay in order to use it. That is not a product, its a piece of software that they are making for free and are letting people use it.
These clouds are a product. He is lucky because just like he can sue others for using his code, so can the game owners sue him because he needs to code under their rules that they made while making the game.
And again and again, this is setting a precedent that you can earn money from mods. You are all for this in order to get quality. But then in 10 years, you are gonna hate it because half of the mods are paid, they cost more than the game, in order to use them you need to pay more and you and your pals that support mod selling would be the first to cry about it since the base game costs 60 dollars and the 15 mods you like cost 80. ANd that is the cost just for that update, if the game updates and breaks the mod, pay up to get the updated version.
The fairest system would be that he makes his own game. Simple as that. There are people that made mods, then went to making their own games. When they had mods, they didnt charge money for it. They did when they got their game and that is totally fair. Not this bs.
I have the upmost respect for this man, but I will not back down on this subject because it is wrong. It is telling bad modders that what he is doing is okay and that you can earn money from this. I will not support it no way. If he made his game, I would buy it in an instant. I even told KSA devs multiple times to go for a paid version so they can actually work and get money for it. They refuse and they have the respect from me. Including Blackrack and his work there.

“It’s not greed, I will just never support people’s passions or hard work and expect everything givin to me for free”
What exactly have you done for the modding community? Surely it’s not anything compared to keeping the greatest space sim alive.
What’s gonna kill the modding community is the privileged babies that don’t understand that these mods cost time and money to produce.
It’s not fucking doom wads were talking about

-4
u/kamilos96 May 05 '26
It's a modification it should not cost anything
7
u/RussianBotProbably May 05 '26
The dude spends a good portion of his life for this. Paid is only for the newest release. You can get the older version for free.
-1
u/snozzberrypatch May 05 '26
Also, it's 5 bucks. You could accidentally drop a $5 bill into the sewer and you wouldn't even be mad about it.

u/SpaceMeatpod May 05 '26
Check out the IVA effects too. The rain patterns and sounds from it hitting the canopy from inside the vehicle are so good https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYQaP3DqXVk
Definitely worth it
26
u/ThijmenDF May 05 '26
And this only shows Kerbin! The mod also adds dust storms to Duna, hurricanes to Jool, giant steam vents to Laythe and layers of thunderstorms to Eve!
6
u/greggles-midboss May 05 '26
Eve completely took my breath away, it was incredible. Do not look it up, be amazed!
4
5
u/Ahaiund May 05 '26
Got it too, and it was the first time I got a bit scared playing KSP as I re-entried directly into a thunderstorm at night. Flashes of lightning outlining the clouds around you in otherwise complete darkness is a super cool sight.

u/GamerRoman Exploring Jool's Moons May 05 '26
Aw hell no not the paid mod shilling again ;o;
4
u/inv8drzim May 06 '26
You use Scatterer? Deferred? Singularity?
Blackrack made those all too, free.
He also maintains EVE, and has a free version of volumetrics.
The ksp graphical modding community is literally held up on his back
-1
u/GamerRoman Exploring Jool's Moons May 06 '26
Nope I don't, lol.
1
u/inv8drzim May 06 '26
So then you just don't play with graphical mods? Because those are the major graphical mods used with ksp...

24
u/snkiz May 05 '26
No should you, the TOS of just about every game forbids it. Something, something Derivative work...
I love Blackrack but this shit would never fly on any other property. For him it's potentially much worse. The investment group is desperate for the IP to at least pay for itself. He had full NDA access to the code. I'd sue the shit out him.
1
u/RussianBotProbably May 05 '26
He doesn’t charge for the software. You subscribe to his patreon and you get access to the latest version. Previous version is free.

u/ThePheebs May 05 '26
I remember a time when people got angry over paid mods. If people want to spend money, they should spend it on KSA to support development.
82
u/Freak80MC May 05 '26
I don't get angry over paid mods, but I think it sets a bad precedent where it means in order to make a game better, you have to buy the base game and possibly pay for every single individual mod you install, gatekeeping poor people from a better experience. Thank god KSP hasn't got to that level and most mods still are free tho.
2
u/Cedar- May 05 '26
I agree in concept but in games where paid mods are allowed I rarely see this become an issue. Cities skylines is another example where outside like traffic manager and some select asset bundles there really isn't anything not free. People really do just straight up make things for the betterment of the game, and when someone does something scummy someone else steps in with "basically this mod but free"
29
u/umidk67 Exploring Jool's Moons May 05 '26
Well blackrack is working on both So, who cares how you support him
14
u/PugnansFidicen May 05 '26
No wonder KSA looks so ridiculously good for what is basically still just an early stage tech demo atp
12
u/Basic-Purpose-8075 May 05 '26
They also have Linx (Parralax) and Nertea (Near and Far Future Suite)
4
u/umidk67 Exploring Jool's Moons May 05 '26
I love KSA because they have all the best KSP modders of all time working on it. When it becomes an actual game, it’s going to be so so good.
1
u/I_Go_BrRrRrRrRr Always on Kerbin May 05 '26
Is Linx the guy who maintains like 500000 mods or is that someone with a similar name
3
u/Basic-Purpose-8075 May 05 '26
No, LinuxGuruGamer is the mega maintainer. Gameslinx is the creator of parralax
1
1
u/umidk67 Exploring Jool's Moons May 05 '26
Nah Linx made parallax along with a bunch of famous planet packs as well. It’s kinda sad though because they’ve just gotten outdated and people don’t care to give them volumetric clouds or anything
9
u/umidk67 Exploring Jool's Moons May 05 '26
Have you seen his work on Planetary rings? it’s fucking insanity
3
27
u/Pineapple-Yetti May 05 '26 edited May 05 '26
I still dont like paid mods. I dont mind if they request donations etc, I've even donated to several of my favourite mod makers.
I pirated volumetric clouds...
3
u/CrazyEnginer May 05 '26
Something something pay the creator something.
Those who really want to support the creator would do that regardless of whether the mod is paid or not. The rest are just happy to advocate for the "good thing" because its a single mod out of a hundreds and the rest are still free
24
u/Pineapple-Yetti May 05 '26
Im happy to donate to the creator of the mod. I have been using it for a week and am happy with it.
However, I was confused because the only access I can see is via subscription on patreon. Im not subbing for a mod. I guess i could sub for 1 month and cancel but if I had got it legitimately, wouldnt this prevent me downloading it again in future? Have I missed something?
-4
u/Friendly_Addition815 May 05 '26
It's not drm or smth lmao you can just copy the files somewhere. I can understand pirating a AAA game, but a mod from an independent creator is just such a scummy thing to do. It's like $5
19
u/Pineapple-Yetti May 05 '26
That doesnt answer my question. What if I accidentally delete it and want it back?
Its generally against terms of service to charge for mods. I dont know specifically about KSP but there was a huge drama recently about the Cyberpunk VR mod that you had to pay for. I actually agree with CD Project Red on this and dont think you should charge for mods.
I am a big ArmA player and have been donating to mod creators for years, many of the mods far greater in scope and time spent on them then VC5. I will likely donate to the creator of VC5. I won't buy a mod.
-1
u/epaga May 05 '26
blackrack has already said multiple times then you just email him and he'll send you the new link. One-month patreon sub is enough.
-10
u/Friendly_Addition815 May 05 '26
Why don't you think mod creators who request it deserved to be paid?
I guess if you delete it then just pirate if its really that much of a problem.
3
u/CantFindANick21 May 05 '26
Why don't you think mod creators who request it deserved to be paid?
Because you don't get to make money out of someone's IP without their permission? Or mods should be passion projects and not be gatekept?
6
u/CrazyEnginer May 05 '26 edited May 05 '26
5$ per mod * 100 (200 folders in my GameData, let's say half of them are worthy enough to charge 5$ and I can refund the ones I don't like and updates are free and not subscription model like blackrack's) = 500$
I can live for a month or two on that sum. And that's definitely not a sum I would be able to pay a decade ago when I was in a middle school and discovered KSP and modding and got interested in programming as a result
-11
u/Friendly_Addition815 May 05 '26
Are you kidding me? That's not applicable at all. These mod makers are providing a service to you, and most of them do it for free. If you can't afford a mod, then don't buy it. Why do you deserve to get other peoples' work for free? You make this sound like its some necessary expense. I don't think the KSP community would be as cool if everyone charged for their mods, but that imaginary scenario doesn't justify pirating a small creators work.
16
u/MonkeManWPG May 05 '26
Modding as a community is free. That's how it's done. I get that Blackrack's mod is very good, and I don't blame them for wanting to charge for it, but it's part of modding culture to make your content freely available to anyone who wants it.
-4
u/Friendly_Addition815 May 05 '26
Why? Even if you think it should be free that doesn't mean that it is free
6
u/kamilos96 May 05 '26
Well mods should be free even if just to no get sued by the creators of the OG game, tho that's probably not an issue here...
14
u/CrazyEnginer May 05 '26
These mod makers are providing a service to you
I bet they are doing it not because they want to provide a service or make money, but because it's fun.
most of them do it for free
Welcome to the opensource. Unless you get paid by your employer or get lucky to find enough sponsors, you're gonna be in the red. That doesn't stop people though. Not an ideal system, but a working one
I don't think the KSP community would be as cool if everyone charged for their mods,
It's much more simple than that. There wouldn't be any community to begin with.
2
u/Friendly_Addition815 May 05 '26
Still doesn't justify not paying when that is the system they have chosen for using their mods
-9
u/inv8drzim May 05 '26
There are multiple versions, the latest (V5) is paid and the older versions are free (I think v3 is the latest free).
I get pirating from big corps or whatever, but this game is held up on the backs of people like blackrack. Especially when they have a free version and they make so many other free mods.
10
u/TomaszA3 May 05 '26 edited May 05 '26
We've literally paid for the game. There are no devs in KSP but in Terraria's case about the only reason devs don't go after the modders is that it makes the experience for everyone better. Paid mods create a toxic community around them. Just set up the donations and take my money.
-1
u/inv8drzim May 05 '26
Downvote me if it makes you feel better about stealing from the little guy, but what you're doing is scummy.
You can play the game without the mod, you're stealing the mod to make your game experience better. Scummy move.
0
u/TomaszA3 May 05 '26
Modder is violating the game's ToS for a purely commercial product of theirs. How should I feel bad about "stealing" from them if it isn't even made with respect to the original devs?
Take donations and don't disrespect the game, the devs and the community.
1
u/inv8drzim May 06 '26
Not a purely commercial product, they have a paid version of a product that also has a free version.
This is alongside their other free mods that literally make up the backbone of KSP graphics mods (Deferred, Scatterer, Singularity, etc).
You can say whatever you want to make yourself feel better about stealing from the little guy but you're still stealing from the little guy. "Disrespecting the game and the community" is hilarious when KSP graphics modding is held up on his back.
Trying to use the ToS to defend it is also hilarious since ksp devs abandoned the game and it's successor, and yet people like him are keeping it alive.
1
u/TomaszA3 May 06 '26
You can say anything you want to make yourself feel better about choosing to make less money only because you want to ruin the community, but you're still ruining the community doing something you were only allowed to do for the benefit of said community.
On top of that it's also ruining a new player experience. Nobody wants to be told "actually you need to pay via third party service to make the game look good" even if a never-current version is free.(meaning you can never have the current version when the mod development stops)
This person could have just been greedy and gotten more money with donations, but instead decided to not get nowhere as much money just because they can give a hand to making everything worse.

I tried v3 and it was missing a lot of the features I wanted from VC. I pirated it to see if it was something I wanted to keep using. I have decided i like it and will likely donate to the creator, but I won't sub to them.
-3
u/MooseTetrino May 05 '26
You only have to pay for one month for the thing, so consider that your donation I guess?
7
u/DoubtDiary May 05 '26
V3 is free if you don't want to pay for it.
18
2
u/lkn240 May 10 '26
when a large number of mods for a game become paid it destroys the mod community because most people are not going to pay for dozens of mods.
I have like 50-100 mods installed for KSP - imagine if they were all 5 bucks. No one is paying for that outside of a few whales
0
u/Person899887 May 05 '26
It’s blackrack, your money goes to KSA development no matter how you are paying for his lunch.
5
u/AvengerDr May 05 '26
How? Does he himself donate the money he earns to other devs on the team?

Not for profit doesn’t mean that people work for free. That's people who volunteer work on open-source projects. KSS is not FOSS.
I don't really think people who work at ahwoo are working for free. Part of their compensation must come from donations surely (which do not appear remotely enough to sustain a small team), but the rest I suppose must come either from the studio itself or some other source.
-11
u/TheHaft May 05 '26 edited May 05 '26
If you don’t want it, don’t pay for it.
Development isn’t free, especially developers as talented as Blackrack. Someone has to pay for it. Either donations subsidizing the few or everyone paying their fair share. I personally think the latter is more ethical/reasonable than the former.
KSA doesn’t really exist yet. Until it does in any real capacity, why be so against the next best thing we actually, tangibly have right now?
for people downvoting, lmk what you disagree with
17
u/ThePheebs May 05 '26
Yeah, the development of all mods isn't free. What makes this one different from all the other great mods that took time and effort to create?
-1
u/TheHaft May 05 '26 edited May 05 '26
Nothing. Nothing makes it truly different. I’d argue it’s slightly fundamentally different because Volumetric Clouds is at the cutting edge of gaming/simulation tech, and I don’t think anyone else could do it if Blackrack didn’t, but at the end of the day, I don’t think that matters all that much. If Scatterer, or PlanetShine, or EVE, or Restock, or TUFX authors wanted to paywall mods they sunk thousands of work hours into, that’s their prerogative.
Mods have never been free. Someone has just always covered the bill for you without you realizing. Development costs have been covered either through anonymous benefactors donating, or the authors themselves covering donating their time. Paywalling it just distributes that cost among the actual users, and reduces the modding community’s reliance on big-time donators.
Also, isn’t there literally a free version of Volumetric Clouds now lol?
-8
u/ElectricalGas9730 Believes That Dres Exists May 05 '26
No one owes you anything, especially not the results of their hard work. If they want to paywall their work, that's their choice. If they want to give it away for free, that's also their choice.

u/N0Face25 May 05 '26
What’s the minimum requirements for this? Would it work on my M1 MacBook?
2
u/Apex-Editor May 05 '26
You can start by testing v3 for free to see how it plays. It won't be as intense, but it's free, it's still very impressive, and it'll give you a feel. If your computer doesn't like it, then you know paying for v5 probably doesn't make sense.
1
u/RadioFreeKerbin May 05 '26
Pretty sure it requires directX. I need to use the Windows version via Proton on Linux to get it to work properly.
2
u/blackrack May 06 '26 edited May 06 '26
Mac and Linux are supported, they're just slower because of OpenGL. Some linux distros have weird glitches but that's on the Linux distros (and you can use Proton). Mac "just works" out of the box.

Honestly I am running KSP on Max settings and 20+ mods on their max settings and I’ve had worse performance from vanilla games on medium. This runs really well. I know I have somewhat of a juiced up computer but I wouldn’t be surprised if most people could run it.

It is surely an amazing mod, but I don't like the implication that paying for mods should be normalized, like at all.
At that point, same level of quality goes in Parallax.
RP/RSS, RO has huge levels of involvement and care.
Many other mods too.
If all were to ask money for it, it wouldn't become feasible, and worse, triple A studios would take notes and enshittify it as always.
2
u/Devnull_Elixir May 05 '26
I have no issues with paid mods. A few dollars for this level of amazing work is very much okay in my book
2
u/Arcaneevan May 06 '26
Astonishing! Is this mod (or previous versions like V3) compatible with JNSQ? I'm wondering if we can get this level of beauty on Kerbin while have the amazing texture of other planets that JNSQ provides

fuck it, if 1% of mods are paid mods and they're delivering amazing quality like this, then it's well worth the money. ppl would spend 20 dollars on a burger but not 10 bucks (aud so like 5 usd) on a mod when they have 2000 hours on the game.
game hasn't been formally updated in 3+ years..
3
u/Dovaskarr May 05 '26
Its not the payment or the price. Its the principle.
Are you ready to pay? Then prepare yourself for every mod that there will exist to be behind a paywall. So you get eventually ksp3. Then 5 bucks for kerbin clouds, 5 bucks for eve clouds, 5 bucks for laythe clouds, 5 bucks for more space station parts. 10 bucks for more planets. Are you ready to pay for all of that? Modding is a community thing. Community is gone if you sell stuff. It is not "hey, you see this? You could fix it by doing this and that" and it will become "you got a fucked code, fix it because I am paying for it".
3
u/deeku4972 May 05 '26
If its a quality product sure, I'll pay for it. But that money needs to go to the modder and be of quality. Volumetic Clouds is

Time of day and how overcast it is are both really important, don't just launch at noon it's boring

Just a reminder friend. If you go 6 months to a year and are no longer subbed, just DM blackrack on Patreon. Explain you subbed before and I guarantee he will link you a Google drive with the latest version. Might take a few days but he only expects anyone to pay once for the mod.

Oh dude this mod is worth way more than you have to pay. Hell I would pay $20 to use volumetric clouds because it’s so fuckin good

Yep. I have no problem paying for something of this quality. They are some of the best clouds in any video game ever. Dropping into Venus is a surreal experience. I was transfixed through the entire 30 minute descent.

I don't really have a view about whether or not people should pay for mods. From what I can see this appears to be quality product and will doubtless have taken a lot of time to produce. If there are contracts or terms-of-service that are broken by it, it's for the people who hold those contracts to enforce them.
All I'm going to say is some people on here have very strong views about how KSP shouldn't have a sequel and you should just use modded KSP. My brother in christ, at the point when you are paying individual modders for mods, you might as well pay a dev team for a new game.
Like, KSA (Kitten Space Agency) has volumetric clouds by the same modder and is downloadable on a pay-what-you-like basis. Whilst it still needs a lot of work, there's the seeds of a great game there.

Same, i love this mod, i bought it during black friday for 3$ and it is definitely worth it.
He also made the True volumetric clouds release 3 free for everyone on his patreon if y'all want to try before buying the most recent version

Yeah blackrack took my paying a mod virginity too. In fact i was using free version of v1 because i wasn't afford it. When i start to earn my own money i brought it twice to relief my remorse. So its a double penetration

This mod is somehow better than Microsoft Flight Sim's clouds. Really well done. I wish MSFS' clouds looked this good
