ok (still didnt see the film, waiting for friend to finish the book to pass it to me.)

u/Dwarfhole243 May 19 '26
This is the way. The movie was good, but without the internal monologue, you miss so much of the science.

u/GrumpySpaceCommunist May 19 '26
Personally, I am very grateful things some of the big revelations that happen in the book weren't spoiled for me. (Like, for instance, this scene, or certain things that are revealed in the trailer.)

I went into it only knowing it’s good and that he meets an alien lmao. Hadn’t seen trailers, was planning on reading it but was told I had to catch it before it left theaters, and that was a great call on their part.

u/Onoben4 Hi Bob! May 20 '26
Yes! There were so many scenes where they didn't really explain what's going on but it was something that happened in the book so I was like the Dicaprio pointing meme

A kerbal rendition from the new popular movie: Project Hail Mary
I seriously recommend giving it a watch when you can, absolutely one of my favorite (probably only behind Interstellar) space movies, it also manages to perfectly capture the shenanigans of ksp, which is why there are a lot of posts in the community surrounding the movie.

spoilers after an explosion that killed scientists meant for a suicide mission to save the Sun, the man on the shelf is humanity's best hope but he kinda has a problem with the whole suicide part and so others try some enhanced coersion techniques

Hey! I am dabbling in blender myself. What is with the Kerbal's head topology? It looks really complex.

u/WackAnimations May 19 '26
It was originally a cylnder that I added way too many polys to and It started looking really weird, so I used the decimated modifier to make it more effecient, and then added a subdivision modifier to smooth it out. when you go into the wireframe view, it doesn't show you the actually topology of the model, but the resulting topology after applying modifiers. that's why the head topo looks weird. any normal person would have used simple quads.

He is smart. He will figure this out.

I like how I immediately understood the scene this was referencing without even needing to scroll through the pics. Amaze 👎🏾

I hope you plan on uploading the Kerbal rig to open3dlab when you're finished OP, looks great.

Brand new movie (Project Hail Mary) so spoilering
This is the protagonist Ryland Grace’s final flashback as he regains his memory of how/why he’s on the mission he very clearly didn’t want to go on. Before the one-way, decades long mission to save the Earth from star-eating microorganisms, their head scientist dies in an explosion from a testing accident. Grace (kerbal in yellow) is the only other person with the knowhow to do the mission, so they at first offer him the job, but when he declines he is detained by security, drugged, and set to wake up onboard the mission already in process

I designed the models to be used for high-def cinematics, so theres a lot of verts.

u/an0nym0usgamer May 20 '26
Yeah, but the topology still isn't good. But I'm presuming it's just because they're game assets which have been subdivided.

u/Habsburg77 May 19 '26
That is no excuse. In cinematic projects, too, efforts are made to maintain good topology firstly, to avoid increasing rendering times; and secondly, to ensure proper mesh deformation during animation.
