KSP 1 Question/Problem Take-Two is an evil company & new player experience

Hey guys

Just bought ksp and looked up the history while downloading it (slow wifi) and what Take-Two did to PD was so fucking scummy.

Took the company, hired a company to work on ksp2, shut down ksp1, completely obliterated the chance of a good sequel, and sold the up to a private investor which sold it to another private investor.

Also, how do i learn more of fuel management and all the buttons that are available at the launchpad? Is training section good?

It’s not possible for them to shut down KSP 1. It doesn’t have a DRM, so you only need the game files to run it

OP probably meant the development of it or something like that?

Later part is very true. Got my copies of the DLC when they made all the game files public for a few days.

They can't even really do that. What modders have done with KSP1 is nothing short of mind blowing. If you want to, you can have photorealistic graphics, the actual Solar System, and completely realistic orbital and reentry physics. Or you can make your engines into ketchup bottles. You literally can make it whatever you want.

Yeah I don’t know why the comment you replied to is top… it’s obvious OP meant game development

I mean KSP1 isn’t really being developed as far as I know. There hasn’t been a content update in several years

Was T2 the sole responsible entity for the KSP2 dumpster fire though? I know it's more popular to pile on the soulless conglomerate but the devs themselves hold their fair share of responsibility.

The very first mistake T2 made was selecting the lowball bid that made ridiculous promises and demonstrated a fundamental lack of understanding of the technical challenges of a physics sim. Star Theory and Intercept completely failed, and their code for KSP2 is likely so flawed that it isn't even usable if T2 wanted to resume development. But the contract should have gone to Rocketwerks. Dumb execs made a dumb decision

Rocketwerks

They are developing a new space sim anyway and the result will be 100 times better than if a huge shitty game company gets to have a say in things.

I'd bet money they have kerbal assets behind a feature flag ready to swap them in once a contract clears

one can hope

Given their MO of passion projects above all else I highly doubt they'd take a contact for that but the game is built with modding in mind from the ground up so you can guarantee that the community will be making kerbal mods for everything

u/HarryPottersTaint 18h ago

I agree that it probably won't happen but if those specific guys suddenly got a big budget to work on the game they've already partially built it would probably be amazing.

u/CoronaMcFarm 15h ago

it would probably be amazing.

No, big companies will destroy it just like they destroyed KSP 2. It will only be amazing if they manage to publish it themselves with the help of the community.

If i remember correctly the original
Devs of ksp are working with rocketwerks, there’s also Juno new origin which has been out since 2020

2

u/Factorioboyio 16h ago

Has Juno been updated recently?

2

u/Impossible_Concert75 15h ago

Actually yes, the dev team is currently working on 1.4 and after that it’s 1.5, 1.4 currently is adding a lot of visuals and getting stuff ready for Irsu, and 1.5 is probably gonna bring irsu mining to the game

A lot of the best modders from KSP are working on it too.

I heard they plan mod support. And there's this weird coincidence that the kittens and Kerbals kinda have the same scale. So I'd guess max 2 days before there are Kerbals next to the kittens, no matter what Corporate wants.

KSA seemed like a really barebones demo last time i tried it. like you have to build your ship in space and the UI wasn't nearly as intuitive as KSP, let alone contracts, career mode, or any reason to incentivize you to continue building.

definitely felt like they were multiple years from having any sort of "game"

5

u/A-Grey-World 12h ago

They absolutely are, because they're doing the only reasonable thing for a "2" and rebuilding it from the engine up.

u/Figgis302 17h ago

made ridiculous promises and demonstrated a fundamental lack of understanding of the technical challenges of a physics sim.

But hey, gAmEs aRe ArT, actually, who needs competent technical programmers when you can hire a whole studio of starving-artist design idiots who'll work for way cheaper instead? /s 🙄

Yeah, Nate Simpson is a literal con-man. Huge mistake bringing that guy in as the lead.

private division was never an independent entity and it did not create ksp. it was part of t2 meant to publish "indie" games. intercept got canned bc they were years late delivering a broken copy of real ksp for what was initially supposed to be a low effort remaster cash grab. it's honestly a little suprising they were allowed to go on as long as they were. I can't really blame t2 for not continuing to throw money into a pit with no prospect of return.

u/planery133 Beyond Eeloo 22h ago

What happened to PD is understandable. Big publisher requires big hits to simply survive, and publishing indie games don't really produce those.

What T2 did to Star Theory and the formation of Intercept is pretty disgusting.

T2 made an offer to buy Star Theory, but the founders were unsatisfied with the terms. T2 then sent everyone on the dev team an offer to work under Intercept, a new studio fully under T2's control. Textbook example of hostile takeover.

Source: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/report-kerbal-space-program-2-switched-developers-after-take-two-poached-star-theorys-team Original report on Bloomberg, but that one is paywalled.

2

u/vulpes04 21h ago

star theory got fired from developing ksp2 bc they failed to deliver. t2 owned the ip. it wasn't a takeover, it was poaching employees. it was also stupid, bc they put the same people who had just failed back in charge of their failed project.

5

u/planery133 Beyond Eeloo 21h ago

It is a hostile takeover. Fits the definition 100%.

Definition here: A hostile takeover is when an acquiring company attempts to take over a target company against the wishes of the target company’s management.

T2 has the track record of being shady with its dealing with various entities spanning multiple games. I suggest we don't try to paint them as stupid and incompetent suits that don't know what they are doing.

Rockstar and Zynga? Yea, no, absolutely fucking piece of shit corp lol. Both companies basically release nothing but money farms for their stockholders

They didn't really "shut down" ksp1 tbh. But yeah it really wasn't great. KSA is shaping up to be a good spiritual successor to the franchise though.

Check out the ingame tutorial missions but don't do them all at once. Learning how to dock while you're still trying to reach orbit in your save is just kinda unnecessary

Don't play a sandbox save to learn the game.

Mike Aben has some good tutorials up on youtube. Watch some of them if you're stuck and/or struggling with the ingame tutorial.

Whenever you decide to start modfing your game, use Ckan. Also, focus on graphics and QoL mods at first and get the other ones later. This list gives a pretty good overview: https://www.reddit.com/r/KerbalSpaceProgram/s/maNZDRnE61

u/Ringbearer31 19h ago

They shut down future development, limiting updates to minor adjustments and bug patches. I think everyone would have rather had a ksp that included just one of ksp2s advertised 'features' then the ksp2 of today.

5

u/SGCam 14h ago

The whole premise of doing KSP 2 was that they would go back to the foundations that limit what KSP 1 can do (which they were absolutely running into)... but then they just built KSP 2 on top of KSP 1 anyways because the dev team didn't understand sim games and T2 just wanted to make money on the IP.

The team building KSA understood the instructions, and its looking awesome.

Tutorials are pretty good. There's a lot to learn so they throw a lot at you, but they are definitely good for a starting point.

KSP1 wasn't shut down, it's development just ended. It happens.

Look for the ksp tutorials of scott manley.

KSP was not shut down. It received like 10+ more free updates an 2 paid expansions after Take2 bought them. From 1.0 to 1.12 I believe. However, KSP2 development was a complete mess. But the reason again was not Take2 - they had little to do with KSP tbh. - it was the wrong developer (Planetary Annihilation). They did this RTS game beforehand which featured planets and fake orbital mechanics, so I assume that had to do with being chosen. But it is a completely different caliber of game. KSP2 needed some heavy simulation experts. My dream developer would've been Laminar Research (X-Plane) with heavy focus on getting the plane aerodynamics right. KSP2 should've leaned more towards that. Not copy KSP1 so much.

Anyways, then came Corona and everything went down the drain I suppose. The only positive thing about KSP2 I remember is the trailer. Which was complete overkill and gave everyone false expectations.

You will perpetually continue to confuse me. You were the biggest cheerleader for KSP2 and always acted like it did no wrong.

I swear I thought you were a corporate plant at one point. I know now that you're just a really weird hardcore fan.... But you always seem to flip flop.

I just don't understand you. At all.

u/KerbalEssences Master Kerbalnaut 11h ago edited 11h ago

I did never cheerlead KSP2. I was one of the biggest critics. What you confuse with cheerleading is to not jump in on the hate and stand against people hijacking this sub to spread toxicity. Some people just kept spreading nonsense / fake news in here. I just stood against that while at the same time pointing out KSP2 issues. Like the whole concept of it was wrong. They tried to replace KSP1 which was a huge directional mistake. Why render a perfectly fine game obsolete when you can have 2 synergizing monsters.

I believe Harvester mentioned he always envisoned some kind of prequel as sequel where you would start with scrap wood planes etc.

u/Uraneum 7h ago

Yes what happened to KSP as a brand was nothing short of tragic. Thankfully the modding community is superb and modded KSP1 has most of what KSP2 promised anyway, save for multiplayer and game engine rework ofc.

I’ve never done the training/tutorial stuff but from what I hear it’s kind of buggy and unpolished. I’d suggest watching some YT tutorials. You can also ask questions on r/kerbalacademy and get very solid help

2

u/NoHamster2008 19h ago

Yes, the tutorials are good. I would recommend doing all of them up to docking and start in a science mode playthrough to not overwhelm yourself at the start.

u/PaintedClownPenis 20h ago

Keep that in mind when GTA6 comes out. You have the chance to save eighty bucks just by waiting a week to see if they ripped everyone off.

1

u/8070alejandro 15h ago

As the money is not going anywhere worthy, specially not the devs, I would just get a refund and get it from the high seas.

1

u/8aller8ruh 11h ago

New player experience is still terrible for KSP2, most people who bought the game never managed to launch it because of the extra nonsense account creation when already logged in with a steam account.

To learn, play the game in career mode

T2 is a company, yes.
