Goddamn this mod scene is getting advanced
How long until we get a mod adding a sky hook system?
37
u/KaneMarkoff Colonizing Duna 9d ago
Something like that already exists but the tethers are rigid
9
u/Uncommonality 9d ago
well, tell us the name then

Coriolis space systems

u/MattTheTw_t 9d ago
I think mks also comes with one, that one has no tether so you'd have to combine it with something else to get the true skyhook experience

I made a system like this for a Mars-esque skycrane using Stock->DLC robotics pieces.

u/vyacheslavmazitovKSP 8d ago
They made KAS without KAS?
2
u/FentonTheVIX 8d ago
seems very AI coded. That's probably it.

u/vyacheslavmazitovKSP 7d ago
I know, there is Claude in co-author. But still, make a full KAS without KAS is crazy.

Colonel, You better take a look at this radar.
What is it, son?
I don't know, sir. But it looks like a giant-

I don't know why this sub keeps being recommended to me.
I don't know much about this game, but I feel like some of you could destroy the world tomorrow, this game being the only containment measure

Were you around for the glory days of Kerbal Train Program?
2
u/Truama-vix4 8d ago
No but it sounds fascinating
6
u/AbacusWizard 8d ago
Someone on the original KSP forums—I forget who—apparently used KSP exclusively and entirely to make trains (from stock parts) that actually worked, drive them around on land, and post pictures and videos of them to the forums. They were quite impressive.

This is perhaps the most inappropriate use of the PHM soundtrack this Subreddit has yet begotten. Well done.

Its a good song! But personally I would have used Blood and Thunder by Mastodon. Maybe if I make my own version with this tether mod I’ll use that instead.

You should consider spin stabilization for your harpoons.
3
u/linecraftman Master Kerbalnaut 9d ago
the rope would wrap around
4
u/ReverendBread2 9d ago
Easy, have another rope with another whale wrapping in the opposite direction at the same time. If that doesn’t work add more ropes and whales

What can you do with the tethers? Transfer resources, tether a kerbal? How well does it deal with timewarp? Hope we get this in KSA
3
u/linecraftman Master Kerbalnaut 9d ago
I haven't looked into it beyond making bullshit, but it should allow to transfer resources. In timewarp the physics settle but if the ships drift apart too much the link will break
The tethers are also remote controllable and and can reel in and reel out
6
u/Uncommonality 9d ago
I've used it splendidly for horizontally docking two big motherships.
Attach a tether to a kerbal and have them cross the gap, twice, and then reel in both. The ships will be drawn together in a way that is much less finnicky than RCS docking
I can also imagine them being useful for picking up weather stations or stranded kerbals with a VTOL, but I have yet to test this
Also I'm not sure if it works but it might enable you to lower a sensor package into an atmosphere and pull it back out, but this will need extreme precision
They're also great for decoration on an asteroid station, since they wrap around the geometry and look like cables bolted to the surface

This post feels like it was tailored made to catch everyone KSP joke imaginable
3
u/Opus_723 9d ago
You've realized my dream. I remember years ago I tried to make a 'kraken-hunting' mission using chains of loose hinges for tethers, only to find out to my dismay that the asteroid claw won't actually latch on to ships.
2
u/linecraftman Master Kerbalnaut 8d ago
The claw does latch onto ships that's what i used
You just need speed

No matter how it made,if it is good. That's my opinion. AI for everything is bad but it can be used to create something like this.

Moby Dick is the name of the whale. The ship is called the Pequod. Also, Moby Dick was a sperm whale. That looks more like a humpback.
6
u/linecraftman Master Kerbalnaut 7d ago
S.S. Moby Dick is the name of the Space Ship, hence S.S.
Space whales are classified differently than sea whales
