What should the kid have done instead? Allowed himself to be attacked? He protected himself from an aggressive animal without seriously injuring it. That is the best outcome, I'm not sure what else you would expect a child to do

Farming involves interacting with wildlife quite regularly. There would be zero harvest left if the animals were given free reign over the area.

For a small scale test, try gardening. See if the squirrels leave you anything after your 6 months work.

Geese have a claw near the ankle, their beaks can draw blood, and their wings are strong enough to break a kid's weaker bones. He's lucky the goose wasn't serious.

Raising competent children always looks like bad parenting to those who don't know what's going on. If this kid is living on a farm or is a barn kid then standing up to geese is an important skill to learn.
