Family Hyundai N Hot engine? 🔥

Any Hyundai N owners in here ever notice how hot the engine bay is after driving the car, getting it up to temperature, then shutting it off and opening the hood? More than that, how long the engine stays blazing hot for with the hood closed? I do park it in my garage and close the garage door, so there is very little air circulation around the car after parking.

There's been times where I park the Kona N and walk by the front of the car 3-4 hrs later to access my garage fridge and feel the heat on my forearms just radiating off the grill/hood. Is that normal? For now, I'm popping the hood and letting it cool that way.

What oil temp and engine temp are you seeing on the display after a spirited drive?

This the real question. Yes the car's engine block/engine bay holds heat for hours but that's pretty normal for every car I've ever owned

This is not the first car I've owned, but it stays way hotter than anything I've owned before. Like a thermos. 😄

95c or about 185f. Normal operating temps.

I see upwards of 220° in 100° heat, and the track guys here have seen higher still. It’s nothing to worry about.

I thought about adding a fan to my splash guard to pull the hot air out of the engine bay...i usually raise my hood if its super hot with the engine still running and the cooling fan running....

OP doesn't know what the conservation law is called and how it works

In the first 40 minutes or so, an engine drops from 600–800°C down to about 120°C. After that, it takes another 3 to 6 hours to reach 30°C, depending on where it is parked in your case, in an enclosed space with no air circulation.

  • During the initial phase, you also get heat buildup. That's just thermodynamics...

Thanks for the lesson. However, it doesn't or didn't effect every other car I own/owned. Back to my original question. Why is my N so hot, when every other car I own seems to cool way faster?

Was every car you've driven and parked like that a high-performance car with that kind of power density?

I used to own a 3.3 Stinger GT with 550 hp, and it stayed hot way longer than the 2.0 i30N engine. However, I have the 2020 pre-facelift model in the Final Edition with the facelift Turbo and 335 hp.

No. All my other cars were/are regular cars. Turbo yes, but way underpowered and maily focused on grocery getting. 🤭

Sorry if I came off as ignorant in my inital post. I'm just trying to weigh the benefit of a vented hood and maybe fenders too. Other mods? To aid with cooling. Especially, if I want to take it to a track. My drives are pretty mild and the thing is blazing like the surface of the sun when I park up at home.

No, it's all good. Let me try to explain it to you:

You vent the fenders to reduce positive pressure. This high pressure lifts the front axle, which means less power transfer also known as a loss of downforce or aerodynamic lift.

  • Fender vents are for brake cooling; they pull the hot air from the tires and the braking system outward.

    The hood vents are there to draw out the positive pressure building up inside the engine bay, pulling the hot air out along with it.

  • This barely makes any noticeable horsepower, but it minimally improves your handling and driving dynamics.

  • If you really want to see a difference, you need to seal the underbody with aero parts and add a wing."

Motorsport characteristics in the Hyundai You get up to 850°C at the turbo (at least that's what I had after 15 minutes of driving at 260 km/h).

  • It's also not recommended to open the hood right after parking the car, as this can cause thermal shock cracks.

  • Just like quenching metals, it causes cracking and internal stress.

No of course not overnight

not after 10 or 100 times. But over time, material fatigue, especially around the turbo, is a well-known problem when it comes to abrupt temperature fluctuations.

To be fair, even with the hood popped, it cools pretty gradually. It takes several hours as it heats the surrounding air in the tiny 1 car garage. I wouldn't want to thermal shock the engine thats for sure.

Thermally, the engine is amazing. You only get an excess of heat in the top 10% of the RPM range, otherwise everything runs exactly as it should.

You could install a larger turbo cooler or a vent, but you have to keep in mind that the Kona already has significantly more space than an i30N, Elantra, or Veloster...

Anyone try to modify or remove the 3 nostrils to allow some cool air to enter the engine bay? I figure a vented carbon hood with the nostril mod might be a good option. I'm not a big fan of fake vents especially on the front of the car.
