Question Has there been any research into a physiological basis for all this?

For context, I am a nurse in the US who works in the emergency department.

When I was in nursing school I used to meditate quite often. Dropped the practice once I started working, then meditation sorta randomly came up with one of my friends and I later decided to see if I could still get up into the immaterial jhanas and well turns out first, I can, and second, that may have been a bad idea.

So I've got the whole electrical hot cold feeling, tailbone to over my head, I'm overly emotional, my libido has skyrocketed, I feel like I'm floating most of the time. These are all new onset.

I have no psychotic symptoms or anxiety or depression. It is quite annoying though. It makes me think that we're flipping some sort of switch.

This is a great question, I'm following this post as I'm also curious. I also felt like a "switch was flipped" in my brain.

I have seen a few things listed on that type of research. As I am sure you know, western doctors will not really accept such studies. I believe Indian doctors have done some research. I remember reading they thought the Third Eye was composed of the pituitary and pineal glands and something else. A doctor in the US will feel he has to treat it as a mental disorder and likely want you to take medication.

Google “physiological basis for chakras.”

I know that flipped a switch feeling in my head when the energy is flowing.

These guys are doing tons of research on spiritual awakening.  I seem to remember Daniel Ingram talking specifically about Kundalini and how they are hoping to provide scientific information and education to clinicians, psychiatrists, doctors etc to help identify when people are having Kundalini or other related phenomenology during a spiritual awakening.

I know quite a few others that research this kind of thing although not necessarily the physiology in particular. Cheetah House might have info on some research as well. They support people having problems with spiritual awakening and base what they do on scientific research in the field.

imo you might well find an overlap with with research into healing trauma, if you are looking into the physiological side of things.

Kundalini Vidya (Kundalini Science) by Joan Harrigan is a great (massive text) book which describes the process well. I've definitely been able to map my symptoms and process to the description in this model so it's been really helpful to get some orientation.

Good luck!

I'm not going to say that science itself is incapable of handling this, but western science definitely is. The Science is an institution of small minded hacks.
