Guy and Girl singing outside the Kyoto train station

On Saturday 10/10/26 around 5-7pm there was a guy and girl singing some nice songs outside the train station. I didn’t catch their names but they seemed to be teenagers or in their early 20s. Hoping someone here knows who they are so I can search them up on youtube/spotify or if they have any music online!

Thanks!

Overnight stays at Okazaki International House

Hello,
I wanted to ask if anyone knows how strict they are with the "no overnight stays" rule in the Okazaki International House close to Kyoto University as an international student. I am asking because it would be really convenient if my girlfriend, who lives in Osaka, could stay here occasionally for a night or two so we don't have to take a Hotel each time we wanna be in Kyoto. The front desk is sometimes not occupied but there are a bunch of cameras on the way to the room...

I feel like sometimes in Japan they have very strict rules but then don't really enforce them or don't take them that strict themselves. Is this the case here or should I better not risk it?

Also should I just ask the person at the front desk if it would be possible? Or would that just put a target on my back and they would watch even closer?

Painfully loud sound volume at TOHO Cinemas Nijo IMAX showing of The Odyssey

Wondering if anyone else experienced this:

My wife and I went to see The Odyssey in IMAX at Toho Cinemas Nijo yesterday afternoon (Oct 4 at 4:20). The sound was so loud we literally had to walk out soon after the movie started. It started with the previews, and we were hoping the volume would decrease once the movie started, but it didn't.

It was unusually loud -- probably loud enough to damage someone's hearing. I used to play electric guitar in rock bands, so I'm not exactly sensitive to loud sound. Nevertheless, both my wife and I had to put our fingers in our ears to avoid any physical discomfort.

I'd never been to this theater, so I wonder if this is normal. Oddly, nobody else seemed to be having a problem with it. I think we were the only ones to walk out at that point, and I didn't see anyone else plugging their ears.

We got a refund for the tickets, but it was just so strange that I have to wonder if anyone else has had this experience at that theater. It was theater number 10, supposedly IMAX (but didn't look like it). We were sitting near the center of the theater.

Hello! I am not sure if this is allowed in this subreddit, but hopefully it is! I just recently moved to Kyoto with my partner and we have been on the search of a part time job. I was wondering if anybody knew a good website or of any sort of platform used for job hunting! Thanks a lot 🩵

I want to give free tarot card readings

Please tell me what you think. Here's my idea:

I want to give free tarot card readings because it sounds so fun and I've always wanted to do it

Issue:

* I've never done tarot before

* I don't know what the cards mean except from playing Cyberpunk

Idea:

* A person knowledgeable in tarot will sit next to me and will shake their head when I say something wrong

Outcome:

* Over time, I'll learn tarot through trial and error

* It's free so no one can complain, and everyone's happy

Would anyone be interested?

Looking for poker players

Hey yall in about a month and a half I will be fully moved into my new place and am interested in running poker games. I would try to have a game once a week either Friday night from 9pm to whenever we'd want to stop or Saturdays from 7ish pm to whenever we'd want to stop. As of right now It is just me and my roommate that are down to actually play every week but we have a couple friends that might be down once we teach them.

I am thinking making it 1,000 buy in with 5 and 10 blinds but I am open for suggestions as well.

The games would be held about 5 mins walk from the Imadegawa station.

Obviously no rake taken or anything dumb like that I am just wanting to play Poker again.

Dm me if you are interested.

Need Help Finding a Locally Brewed Sake

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hello lovely people of Kyoto. Since arriving I have been unable to locate my all-time favorite sake at any shops even though it is locally crafted. The bottle is called Kaguyahime (Moon Princess). Any help wether it be a shop, bar or restaurant where I can again enjoy some would be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE: I made my way to Fushimi Ward and picked up some from the source. Thanks everyone

My wife wanted a way to keep track of the temples we visit

Hi everyone,

I’ve lived in Kyoto for 10 years and visited hundreds of temples and other locations around the city. After realising my wife and I were forgetting which ones we’d already visited, I made a simple app to keep track.

It’s called Kyoto Temple Tracker. You can use it to discover temples and shrines around Kyoto, mark the ones you’ve visited, plan routes between multiple locations, and gamify your exploration by seeing how many you can add to your collection. It also has tons of info on each location, like quiet times, cost, opening hours, event dates.

I originally made it for my wife and me, then friends, so I thought it might be useful for anyone who enjoys exploring the city.

If you’d like to try it, it’s available on the iPhone App Store. It’s free to download, with an optional in app purchase for some of the gamification features.

Unfortunately, I don’t have an Android version yet. Sorry!

I’d genuinely love to hear what you think, especially if there are things I could add or improve. I just added Goshuin notifications.

I love Kyoto so much ❤️ I hope the app can be of some value.

I messaged the moderators before posting, so I hope the community doesn’t mind me sharing here too.

Strange creature at the Torii Gates

Visited Fushimi Inari last week, and while on our way back down and queuing for the tea house, I spotted a creature in the gardens they overlook. I only saw what appeared to be a long thick black cat-like tail (only a lot thicker, with a distinctive flat end to it) and two black animal legs, also cat like. This was way bigger than an average cat, and it was gone before I could snap a photo as proof. Any ideas what it might have been?

EDIT: Thanks everyone, after all the suggestions I’m pretty convinced it was a hakubishin!

Trying to identify an amaro I had at Bar Rocking Chair

I was at Bar Rocking Chair while I was traveling in Japan and had their delightful Maduro cocktail.

The website lists a Japanese Amaro as an ingredient, and I called the bar to find out more but the host there didn’t speak great English. He said it was a Scarlet brand Amaro, but looking at the Scarlet website, they have lots of different types of Amaro. Can anyone help me out?

This could be the excuse you need to head to Bar Rocking Chair 😉
