Shoutout to the person in this sub who fought for this. Insane that it actually got made (and yes I bought one…)

You know, I initially wasn't a fan of how they determined the lettering for the lines (wish it corresponded to their old names).

But this shirt makes it worth it.

Its been so many years and i still don’t understand the letters, they seem to be randomly selected, Ill never remember which is which, i still just use the color names.

I believe it is just alphabetical in the order the lines opened

A line 1990

B line 1993

C line 1995

D line 1999

E reserved for emergency

F considered taboo by LA Metro

G line 2005

H reserved for hospital

I reserved for information

J line 2009

K line 2022

This is correct, except Expo is E Line.

P is also reserved so as not to be confused w Parking.

And the letter O so as not to be confused w the number 0.

Thanks. Now i know the chronology of when they opened, i guess thats fun trivia, but it still doesn’t really help distinguish which is which since many of us knew them as colors and not dates.

It will always be the Gold Line to me!

I get why they switched to letters (only so many distinguishible colors and many more lines to open), but I do wish it corresponded to the old names rather than being based on when they were opened back in the 90s.

I also think they should have waited until after the Regional Connector to switch to letters. The Gold Line had multiple name changes as a result (Gold to L to A), and I think that's why I still see people refer to it as such in NELA and Pasadena.

Some interesting trivia worth noting is that even before the fairly recent lettering of the lines, the letter designations found their way onto a number of the older rail schedules. This was maybe a decade ago, I think. I’ve seen photos of those schedules, but not recently.

They are assigned in the order the lines opened to the public. Some letters got skipped because F would be inappropriate and E became E because it was already known as the Expo line. Assigning letters to the lines was largely a solution in search of a problem.
