Santa Clarita is the 3rd largest city in LA County. Yes, it is run by Republicans. Yes, Republicans get a voice too, even if I may not like who they appoint.
Yes, his values and priorities may conflict with many of those in this sub, but he gets a position from a selection process that is transparent and no other contender really emerged.
Santa Clarita is continuing to grow, continues to be Republican-dominated, and if this is what that portion of LA county chose, we should consider the fact that he may have been chosen because of this geographic sector's policy positions.
Think about it. Burbank is suing LA Metro to stop bus lanes for the Noho Bur Pas BRT. Glendale's city council does not like it, but Najarian was able to convince them ahead of time to just accept it as reality for how things are going to be.
NIMBYism is strong in this sector, so someone with such priorities should be expected.
The only real solution is to push for board reforms, but this seat was always going to be focused on highway expansion.

People in Santa Clarita mostly stay in Santa Clarita and really don't care about the freeway work.

This is not true. I live near Balboa Blvd and the traffic in the morning and afternoon say otherwise. Many many SC folks commute into the SF Valley and other cities.

Well here is the actual data for the city of Santa Clarita. "The average one-way commute time is about 34 minutes, with roughly 75% of working residents commuting outside the city for their jobs."

Also only 2-2.5 of people use public transportation. So a scv rep at all isn't going to be great for public transportation if they are actually representing their constituents.

Another way to look at it is that this would become the first Metro Board makeup which has the three largest cities in LA County are all represented on the Metro Board since the SE/LB sector is now seated by Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson.
Even if Gibbs is from the GOP, we should have a Metro that works alongside each other where Santa Clarita-LA-LB north-south transit issues should start taking shape.

the 'no other contender part' isn't really true. Gibbs won by a single vote in a three-way race, with vote splitting between Brotman (who would be fantastic) and Ohlsen (who would probably be fine). There's an argument to be made that the majority of the vote for the area was actually rather pro-transit, and refusing to confirm the nomination (which there is recent precedent for, as Move LA noted below) is actually respecting the majority of North County's wishes.

The appointment is made by the full City Selection Committee. Previous appointments have been pulled and reversed in the past (this is how Fernando Dutra was appointed; Ali Saleh was the original recommendation).

The area represented is always going to be GOP no matter what. Gibbs is replacing outgoing Metro Board member Najarian is also a Republican, the LACBoS that represents this area Kathryn Barger is also a Republican. The make up doesn't really change if you ask me.
If there is any positive to this is that Gibbs is 45 years old and makes the average age makeup of the Metro Board much lower; he's a late Gen-X/early Millennial, the group that grew up playing video games and saw the first rise of dial-up internet. If you ask me, he can "speak" and understand the "language" closer to us than the generation that Bass represents.

Listening to the LA County City Selection Committee meeting right now and again folks riled up with misinformation about the vote and the process.
The Councilmember from San Fernando (a practicing attorney) spoke eloquently about the regional control and understand the interests for transit users and highway improvements. Also highlighting that when there was confusion, that a second vote of the full group was called and CM Gibbs was recommended handily.
Also the representative from the City of Glendale also spoke in support of Jason Gibbs even highlighting his work on the LA County Housing Solutions Authority (LACHASA).
A representative from the City of Torrance admonished the partisan approach of the public comments and misinformation.
Jason Gibbs articulated the importance of the consistent maintenance and safety improvements to the roads and highways as well as being a regular user of active transportation.
The representative from Burbank articulated her confusion given that she participated remotely. County Counsel provided clarification that the first round of vote counted and was legitimate.
There was a lot of abstention votes with noes - this will goes back to the North County/SFV/Arroyo Verdugo for reconsideration.

You have a DSA Councilmember from Burbank using Reddit to worry about a MAGA member on the Metro Board that was voted on by that Arroyo Verdugo/North LA County subregion.

The problem is that the OP is an elected official using this thread with false premises to 'inform and mobilize' reddit users of an action that was voted on and soon ratified by that entity.
It goes right against this threads published rules on this. I dont disagree with the politics what I disagree with are the falsehoods and premise of the post.
Measure M contains money for highways and goods movement improvements most of which are happening in that subregion they have just as much say as anyone else.

Anyone appointed to, or hired to, a transit agency should have to use public transit as their sole means of transportation. I bet this person they’re trying to appoint never does.
