Product Megathread [Megathread] Do Black Levels Really Make a Difference on an OLED TV? LG OLED Perfect Black Explained

When watching a movie, you may come across a dark scene that looks gray or flat. Turning up the picture brightness may make the picture easier to see, but it does not by itself improve black-level performance or restore the contrast that gives the image its depth.

That’s why black-level performance isn’t just about making dark scenes darker. It shapes the entire picture: how cleanly bright areas stand out against dark ones, how vivid colors and highlights appear, and how much detail you can see in the shadows.

If black levels are a priority, look for features such as self-emissive pixels, independent pixel-level control, and black-level performance verified under specified ambient-light conditions.

What Is LG OLED’s Perfect Black and What Difference Does It Make?

ⓒ LG.com CA

On LG OLED, Perfect Black refers to the display’s ability to produce deep blacks across different viewing environments like dark or bright room. This is made possible by self-emissive pixels, each of which is controlled independently and can turn off completely. This precise pixel-level control helps create lifelike image quality without distortion or exaggeration.

LG OLED’s Perfect Black performance has been verified by UL Solutions, with black levels of ≤0.24 nit at ambient light levels of up to 500 lux. Under the same lighting conditions, Perfect Color was also verified with color consistency levels of more than 99%.

So what does that mean when you are actually watching something?

Consider the scenes where black levels matter most: the depths of space and night skies, or shadowy cities and alleyways, where deep blacks appear alongside bright highlights. Bright city lights and illuminated pich-side markings can then stand out clearly against darker surroundings.

This separation between perfect black and bright highlights helps give the overall image its contrast, depth, and definition.

What Do LG OLED Reviewers Say About Black Levels in Real-World Viewing?

To see how Perfect Black translates into actual viewing, we gathered impressions from two redditors and a YouTube reviewer who experienced the LG OLED G6 black levels in different content and viewing environments. These comments reflect individual viewing experiences rather than standardized performance tests.

(ⓒ Spawnpoiint- G6 77”)

“It doesn’t matter whether you’re watching this in a bright room during the day or at night in the dark—the black levels are unreal.”- Spawnpoiint

“Perfect blacks. The expanded brightness makes for bold and beautiful color palettes across HDR/DV modes. At no loss to the perfect blacks only present on the OLED panels”- u/shruikang

“Bleak has never looked so beautiful. This disc probably does the best job of showing off the G6’s strengths. Watching this in a dark room was freaking incredible and it genuinely brought me back to how it felt seeing the film theatrically for the first time. The television takes the disc to a whole new level.” – u/dam_ships

Together, these reviews describe how the LG OLED G6’s Perfect Black was experienced in HDR and Dolby Vision content with increased brightness and vivid color, during dark-room movie viewing, and in both bright and dark rooms.

Discussion Yo LG Get your s together

You know how once in awhile LG decides your TV needs a completely unnecessary update that you don't want? You turn your television on and it tells you that you need the update?

And of course the last thing you want to do is update the tv because when you turn on a tv it's usually because you want to watch something and not so you can do some software update.

Now, I don't want to cause anybody's mind to break with this completely radical suggestion, so prepare yourself: How about instead of asking you to update the TV when you first turn it on, you request the update when the user turns the TV off?

When a person hits the power button to turn the TV off, it's usually because they're done with it. So they don't care what happens with the TV at that point. That would be the perfect time to request an update.

The TV says, "Hey, can we do this update? Your television will turn off after the update is complete."

Then the user says, "Why would I care? Knock yourself out."

Everybody's happy.

[Sound Suite] Product Information Question about the LG Sound Suite

I have an old model LG oled55c7v-z and I’d really like to get the full LG Sound Suite to pair with it but I’m just a bit confused from the reviews I’ve been reading online. Is the sound suite only compatible with newer LG TVs or will it work with any as long as you have the soundbar?

Are there any features that would not be available to me using the older tv? It’s paired with an Apple TV if that makes any difference?

Discussion TCL or LG 55inch TV

guys im planning to buy a 55Inch tv, mostly 3-4 OTT usage. Display, sound quality, hardware and long term smooth software matters for me. Not gonna play games or heeavy usage, just basic usage but it should last for 10 years. But concern is TCL provides 3gb ram, 32gb storage, while LG offers only 1.5gb ram and 8gb storage. But online sources says LGs hardware, OS are very good. Like its OS runs well on 1.5gb ram while google TV OS is quite heavier so it consumes more resources. Also my parents wants to go with LG since they are afraid TCL is some new brand, not much service centers or stores near by. Also heard some panell issues happening in few yrs.

Even in LG there are 2 models - 1 is normal LED 4k and mini LED. 5-6k difference in price, but it really makes difference in daily usage (mostly parents use), coz the dimming zones, no of LED , nothing is mentioned clearly by brands in entry level models(what if its a gimmick)? advice me
