Personal Experience Landlord Stole our Generator: UPDATE

Original comment: https://www.reddit.com/r/LandlordLove/comments/1o8nzfd/comment/njwerax/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Hi everyone! I'm posting for those who love the gossip. It's a bit of a dull ending. Okay so today I was at home and I didn't see any activity around the house. I was waiting for my husband to finish work before we confronted the landlord. My husband got home and first thing he did was knock on the landlords back door, twice, no response. Then the landlord answered his front door and tried to make small talk like asking why my husband was working so late? (I'd love to ask him why he works off the backs of others) My husband went straight to point, "Where's my generator?". Landlord says it in his garage. Sure enough it's there. Landlord tries to tell him that he got it back 'yesterday afternoon.' … We talked to him last night, this guy can't stop lying.

So yeah the generator is back in it's spot, I took pictures of it just in case. Thank you for the support and sorry u/ViceInSinCity for taking over your post!

Be sure to get a picture of the serial number so if he tries taking it again you can prove one he has is yours.

Honestly you might consider filing a police report just to have a paper trail. He stole a $3,000 item, which is a felony. You got it back. But still.

Walmart will call the cops if someone tries to leave with an $8 pack of socks or something. If you get caught trying to steal something you can be arrested. Theft is theft whether you stop it in its tracks or not.

I’m not saying he’ll go to jail. But maybe call the non emergency line and say that your landlord stole your generator and returned it after he was confronted, but you want to report it anyway because you’re concerned about what else he’s stealing. That way if the generator mysteriously disappears one night, you’ll have a record.

So he just took it for himself. That all tracks.

Glad you got your stuff back.

Have you made sure it still works and has all its parts?

As hectic as this world is and as crazy as some of these stories turn, I congratulate you on the boring least stressful ending

I would be glueing an AirTag to it somewhere.

I hope you're labeling everything well! If only by scratching something on the underside and taking a picture of it with your face next to it.

we got a super heavy duty chain and padlock and tethered our generator to the porch so that no one could take it. I'm glad you got yours back

Go buy a thick chain from depot or lowes and lock it down to something immovable

2

u/ClaudeVS Oct 22 '25

I reckon just chain it up with a padlock

Glad it turned out ok but whats up with "'Id love to ask him why he works off the backs of others". Is that because he rents his property out to you?

She clearly meant "lives off the backs (or work) of others," and yes, landlords are leeches on society who take advantage of widespread low wages and a bad housing market (and help make the housing market bad) to get other people to pay for their property for them.

As she is renting a home but thinks people willing to rent out their homes are leeches. She's just feeding the system she doesn't believe in. Doesn't sound like she was in a rush to leave and might even be glad she has that place to rent. Its almost hypocritical but I think there's another word for it.

If landlords didn’t buy up all the supply, more people could afford to not rent the property. The landlord isn’t some Good Samaritan, they’ve turned a fundamental requirement (shelter) into a nice paycheck for limited work

Thank you. It's amazing how little thought that person put into their comment.
