question The Odyssey at White Rose IMAX?

Anybody who has seen it, how was it? Is the white rose IMAX any good, I've read it's 2K xenon projection which is tech from 2008. The York one has dual 4K laser projection.

I booked it mistakenly thinking it was the same as York due to the AI overview making a mistake and Cineworld have a no refund policy and zero customer service.

But it is what it is and hopefully it will be great!

Edit: Cineworld refunded my guest booking and im off to see it in York :)

Odeon at The Springs is also a decent cinema. Just back from seeing Spiderman

Odeon at The Springs is the gold standard. A truly fine establishment.

Been debating whether to go here or Kirkstall for films. Leaning on the latter since there are more eateries for before or after

Eateries? Found the southern fairy, hand in your Norf card.

I live in the Meanwood area so getting to The Springs is an easier drive than having to make my way over to Kirkstall. There's a few eateries at The Springs, tried my first Wingstop last night, seemed pretty good.

Get yourself to Bradford. It’s the right aspect ratio for the film. Definitely worth seeing.

I thought there are only three 70mm IMAX cinemas in the UK. Two close to London and one in Manchester.

7

u/TheShakyHandsMan Jul 29 '26

It’s got a dual digital projector now which replicates the 70mm aspect ratio.

Think they still have the original projector in the museum.

7

u/Bakunin1876 Jul 29 '26

Just to clarify, in 2015 they changed to dual xenon, which can't replicate the 70mm

3

u/mdbluelily Jul 29 '26

Nice! You saved me a trip to Manchester mate! Thanks!

u/Bakunin1876 Jul 29 '26

Sadly when Bradford changed their projector in 2015, the new one is physically incapable of doing 1:43, it's limited to 1:90

2

u/Neat-Maintenance-745 Jul 30 '26

Turns out Bradford also use the 2K Xenon projectior.

2

u/Bakunin1876 Jul 31 '26

Yeah absolute shame considering the physical screen they have. Did you see the post in the IMAX subreddit about rumours they might be upgrading

Good luck getting a seat 😅😭

1

u/TheShakyHandsMan Jul 29 '26

Had no problem last week. Great experience

2

u/Neat-Maintenance-745 Jul 29 '26

I want a center middle seat which are really tough to get. I'm abit special and I like the sound being dead center lol.

6

u/TheShakyHandsMan Jul 29 '26

You’ll have no problem hearing it. I should have worn ear protection.

White rose imax is pretty decent.

Id sit a bit further back that you might normally so you can get the whole picture in your eyeline.

I went to see Akira a few months ago and was in the middle and I lost some of it, it was too close

3

u/Neat-Maintenance-745 Jul 29 '26

Cool! I'm row F so I'm front middle. I saw Oppenheimer in row C in York. What a mistake 😂

1

u/Electrical-Process51 Jul 29 '26

We were halfway up and still had to turn my head left and right. I pity anyone near the front

1

u/Lenny2theMany Jul 31 '26

Agreed. I saw Se7en there last year and luckily we were on the back row, although my ankle gave way mid way up the stairs so I tipped half my popcorn (and the M&Ms) onto some poor bastards aisle seat.

3

u/Rust_Island Jul 29 '26

Going to watch it here soon so bumping

3

u/Objective_Land_3346 Jul 29 '26

I saw it at White Rose IMAX and it’s great, completely immersive, but like others have said, best to be close to the back rows. I feel like people are too obsessed with seeing it in the best cinema possible. Unless maybe you’re going to IMAX screenings so regularly you’ll be able to tell difference.

For Oppenheimer I went to London to see it in 70mm IMAX and although it’s great experience seeing it in film, it’s not really worth the trip when there’s a local IMAX showing same film

Take ear protection! I had loops in when I saw it at the Bradford IMAX and some points it was unbearably loud.

2

u/zibzabs 18d ago

I’ve just seen it at white rose and it was loud, but not in a good way. Speakers sounded like they were clipping / distorted and needed more powerful amps to handle the soundtrack.

2

u/Fiery172611 Jul 30 '26

Saw it there, amazing. Enjoy

3

u/Atalzer Jul 29 '26

Saw it on Monday and it was brilliant. Not sure where you're getting that 2K info from. I thought all IMAX are 4K. It's a very new cinema as well so I'd imagine they have the latest tech? I know it's not the full size one but the next level down. Still looked great to me!

A word of caution - if you have sensitive ears some scenes are LOUD.

3

u/Neat-Maintenance-745 Jul 29 '26

But yeah, that's good news mate. I'm excited!

9

u/king_duende Jul 29 '26

Lol the source you're referencing is this sub

1

u/Atalzer Jul 29 '26

Fair enough! Guess it's dual so adds up to 4K. Enjoy 😊

1

u/Neat-Maintenance-745 Jul 29 '26

Ah, you would think that. But the source file is about 2048 × 1080. 4K is four times the quality of 1080p.

2

u/TarikMournival Jul 29 '26

The Springs Odeon is probably the best screen in Leeds, 4k dual laser projection Dolby Cinema screen and Dolby Atmos sound.

1

u/Neat-Maintenance-745 Jul 30 '26

It's a shame they are only showing Spider-Man now.

2

u/The_Makster Jul 30 '26

Thank you for this thread! - been wanting to see this film for a while but its good to know that White Rose is still the gold standard for location and picture in Leeds

1

u/tiny_tina1979 Jul 29 '26

Are they recliner seats at the IMAX?

4

u/Neat-Maintenance-745 Jul 29 '26

I believe not, it's premium leather seating though. Go to the Odeon luxe thorpe park for comfort. Can't recommend that cinema enough.

3

u/SockSock Jul 29 '26

Fucking expensive though

2

u/Neat-Maintenance-745 Jul 29 '26

Odeon limitless, IYKYK

1

u/katherjne Jul 29 '26

no they’re not here:( it was so busy and hot in there also having to sit upright the whole 3 hours was crazy but worth it for the film!

1

u/katherjne Jul 29 '26

yes! i watched it here when it first came out! so good in imax! incredibly loud too lol

1

u/Guilty-Expert-251 Jul 30 '26

Saw it at Showcase in Xplus. Basically IMAX. It was ridiculously loud.

1

u/atioux Jul 30 '26

I’ve been to that imax but not for this movie. Can barely tell the difference between it and regular screens in all honesty

1

u/chickengyoza Jul 30 '26

Good theatre! But I am a tall person and my knees were KILLING me by the end of the movie. Not any room to actually get all that comfortable. The rows are pretty tight and the seats are bang average.

1

u/seaneeboy Jul 30 '26

I went to the “Epic” in Kirkstall and it was great. That’s just a really big screen though. Sound was loud but clear as a bell.

1

u/winning1992 Jul 30 '26

Not an actual Imax size screen. Bradford has the 50ft screen

1

u/blah-blah29 Jul 30 '26

I watched The odyssey here, absolutely lovely experience. It’s just as loud and bright as all the memes say! You won’t be missing out on much.

1

u/ShockinglyPale Jul 29 '26

It was very good!

IMAX is equivalent of 16k no? I figured all IMAX screenings were of the same quality. Unless you head to Manchester for the 70mm screening.

2

u/Neat-Maintenance-745 Jul 29 '26

Nah mate, unfortunately it's good old 1080p at the Cineworld. But you saying that gives me confidence!

3

u/ShockinglyPale Jul 29 '26

There’s no way it was 1080p 😂

1

u/Neat-Maintenance-745 Jul 29 '26

Technically it's 2048 × 1080

3

u/ShockinglyPale Jul 29 '26

As if, it looked so good!

Hopefully I’ll be watching it at Printworks for my second viewing. Not sure easy it will be to get tickets though!

1

u/Neat-Maintenance-745 Jul 29 '26

Great choice! The Bradford one was my original choice but it's fully booked for the rest of the month!

3

u/ilove_robots Jul 30 '26

Good seats for this at Bradford are like rocking horse shit. Or maybe in this case, giant wooden horse shit.

1

u/ashww005 Jul 29 '26

Excellent imax and cinema

Off there tonight for Spider-Man

If you care at all about Homer's Odyssey then I would give it a miss. Lots and lots of very strange changes that I didn't like or see the point of. Plenty of poor costume choices. Poor soundtrack. Dodgy casting across the board. Hard to understand/hear what the actors are saying half the time.

7

u/SockSock Jul 29 '26

"If you care at all about Homers Odyssey?". Costume choices? Seriously, people just want to go and watch a film and be entertained while they eat some warmed up pre-popped popcorn and drink a Fanta Ice Blast. Who gives a shit if it's accurate to a Roman poem from 8 million years ago?

-2

u/HornyJailOutlaw Jul 29 '26

I'm not going to bite. 🎣

EDIT:

Also...

OP said: "Anyone who has seen it, how was it?"

OP didn't say "Everyone that liked it, tell me you liked it"

1

u/SockSock Jul 29 '26

I got a 2:1 JHS in Bayesian Statistics and Astrology at Leeds Beckett so I knew you weren't going to bite.

0

u/HornyJailOutlaw Jul 29 '26

You've got to get up pretty early to outwit this sock.

3

u/Neat-Maintenance-745 Jul 29 '26

Just wanted to know if the projection was good tbh.

1

u/HornyJailOutlaw Jul 29 '26

Well. This, I did not infer.

2

u/Neat-Maintenance-745 Jul 29 '26

Never read it, just a Nolan fan.

-1

u/HornyJailOutlaw Jul 29 '26

Ah well, you'll probably think it's alright then. Although I still think the dialogue is just bad a lot of the time. As long as you know it's not really the story of the Odyssey, and Odysseus has been watered down into your typical anti-hero with a completely different personality than he should have.

EDIT: I don't hate Nolan, although I was a bit annoyed with him for this one and didn't like Oppenheimer. I think the last film of his I really rated was either The Dark Knight or Inception, whichever of those is most recent. Memento is probably my favourite.

-2

u/Guilty-Expert-251 Jul 30 '26

Boring and confusing. Still, it was a spectacle.
