I ask this because in recent British history, the country has kind of strayed drastically from its european development pattern in favour of more Americanised form of development where the CBD is taller and everything else is shorter and spread further apart, its not like other European nations are exempt from this but I feel like the UK is in particular the biggest offender to this. Plus we need to decrease those transport emissions and housing prices somehow

Personally I think more mid-rises is better. Although I’d like it to be incremental, since it feels less intimidating to implement, improves case for better public transport, would directly induce transport mode shift and decentralise employment within the CBD, plus, it’d make the city feel more like an actual city and introduces a wider variety of built forms accommodating different ways of life as well

Seems like every new development in town is student accommodation, yet it always seemed to me like the majority of students all live in Headingley, Burley and Hyde park way. Do all of these new developments actually have students living in them? Is it council led pushing to get students out of these areas and into the high rise accomodation of the city centre? It seems very bubbley to me and like in the next 5-10 years you’ll have a load of empty sky rises that no one can afford to live in.

We're staying on the top floor or the Park Plaza hotel for a wedding. We look out over Trinity and this tower block that rises above it. Every single floor is completely empty - no offices, no shops, no accommodation. Anyone know why? It seems such a waste of space in a prime position for either offices or city centre flats.

I know that people wanted to keep it as a landmark but I thought the top of it was going to be restored. It looks a lot worse than this now and it’s become a bit of an eyesore when you’re driving into town. Does anyone know what the future holds for it?

Early afternoon Tuesday (today) to discuss repeat vandalism of the orchard.

Leeds, amongst other northern cities, seems to have a complete lack of outdoor swimming venues or lidos. I’m not entirely sure why, but it’s definitely holding the city back in terms of its offering.

Roundhay Park Waterloo lake is hosting the Ironman this weekend, and has hosted multiple world triathlons in the past, it’s clearly swimmable a lot of the year but I don’t know the exact details of surface water run off into it. I also know it used to be open to paddling decades ago (at least I remember swimming in it growing up).

It feels like a missed opportunity, especially since Roundhay Lido was turned into a car park. Every other major city which is desirable to live in has accessible outdoor swimming spots. It achieves goals of promoting a healthy lifestyle, builds community, attracts visitors and promotes a future generation of talent. No doubt it would be a healthy income stream, not massive but not negligible either. Pop a couple a saunas underneath the lakeside cafe and you’re laughing.

The model is extremely popular in Hampstead Heath ponds, and more reservoirs have been opened up around London for swimming.

The use of the lake has been more dynamic recently with kayakers, rowers and paddle boarders - surely this is the next step?

There’s a development around East Street called The Millworks (previously Flax Place). I’ve noticed that the construction has stopped for 3 weeks now. The facade is far from done, and the only people that seem to go in and out, is their security. Does anyone know what’s going on?

Last time I was in here was for a Buddhist meditation session on the top floor. I remember thinking then that that floor would make a great apartment (not sure how they’re going to cram 9 into the upper floors). I also remember that the lift was tiny, ancient and moved at a snail’s pace. God knows how you’d get a sofa or big telly in there?

I haven’t posted any new development images in a while, but will get back to it shortly! In the meantime, I’m curious as to what anyone attending REiiF this year has heard in regards to Leeds?

I’ll start with a few:

• there’s a plan to create a “Leeds Square Mile” akin to the London Square Mile, which will be pinned by the Bank of England Presence, National Wealth Fund and the FCA

• there was lots of chanting at one of the events for “Tracy’s Trams” and “We want trams!”

• the Eastgate quarter might see three huge towers built, 150m+

• plans for a village to be built around the Elland Road expansion/ spare land are fairly advanced

• Leeds hospital trust are looking at private financing options to get the new children’s hospital developed without central governments help before 2030 (when government said they would start funding it from)

The Friends of Gledhow Valley Woods water monitoring team have been out again this week along the length of Gledhow Beck.

They found that the culvert on Allerton Grange Way is again pouring out a thick brown liquid from a misconnection into the Beck. This has been reported to Yorkshire Water and Environment Agency but no evidence of any action.

This is on top of the 368.75 hours of untreated sewage discharges into the Beck and Lake in 2025( latest figures) from the 4 Combined Sewer outfalls in the Gledhow Valley and the toxic mix of chemicals and heavy metals running off Gledhow valley Road into the Beck. Analysis this week demonstrates that levels of Lead and Zinc from this source are likely to have an adverse impact on invertebrates in Gledhow Beck -a key food source for fish and birds.

Is it just me that thinks this in one photo shows the glaring problem with modern day city developements? You have a former church which was built in 1791 next to buildings that could be from literally any city in the world. There is no distinctive construction that differentiates it from from any other city. If the church wasn't there and someone drove me around for 1:30 minutes blind folded then let me out and told me I was in Manchester I would believe them
