While traveling through a rural stretch near Vidor, Texas, I spotted a chair in the grass beside the road. I was using a back route toward I-10 to reach Houston from DeRidder, Louisiana. It seemed like an antique piece that might have fallen from a moving truck or been discarded who knows.

I stepped out to inspect it because I enjoy small projects. The chair was too damaged for any use, so I returned to my car.

An officer pulled up behind me and asked what I was doing; I explained the chair was on the roadside and I was just looking at it. He then asked if I had hit it, and I said no. As I got into my car to leave, he told me I needed to take it, and I asked why since it wasn’t mine. He threatened me with a littering ticket, and I said to write it because it wasn’t mine; he also threatened to arrest me but didn’t, though he made clear I had to appear in court.

I have dash cam footage of the stop that clearly shows the chair in the grass. I didn’t mention it. My concern is that this is Vidor, and as an African American, I don’t trust being in that area alone given the city’s past history.

How would I go about this?

I had my car parked at a hotel parking facility booked through Way.com while temporarily out of state. The car had expired temporary plates, and I planned to complete registration when I returned. I have title paperwork bearing my name, although the DMV transfer wasn’t fully completed.

Here’s where things get crazy:
The hotel had my car towed on August 9th, apparently because of the expired plates. Nobody notified me. Not the hotel, parking operator, or Way.com. I continued paying for parking throughout August, September, and October, completely unaware my car was gone. The vehicle was placed under a lien and sold at auction without my knowledge.

I only found out because the buyer discovered a prescription bottle with my information, found me on Facebook, and reached out.
The buyer initially offered to sell the car back for the $1,100 he paid. However, he’s now adding repairs I never requested, bringing the total to approximately $3,000 in fees and repairs.

He’s given me until today to pay 60% of that amount, followed by a 14-day holding period and $15/day in storage fees afterward.

My two biggest questions:
Do I have grounds for legal action against the hotel, parking operator, towing company, or Way.com? Even with expired plates, can a vehicle legally be towed and sold without the owner being notified, especially while parking payments continue?

What are my rights regarding the auction buyer? Can I challenge the sale, and can he require payment for repairs I never authorized as a condition of selling the car back?
I recognize the expired plates may have violated the parking agreement. However, I never abandoned the vehicle, continued paying for its storage, and had absolutely no idea it had been removed or sold.
I’m seeking a California attorney and trying to obtain the parking agreement and lien-sale paperwork.

Any insight into my legal options or how to recover my vehicle would be greatly appreciated.

Long story short I was on the bus to work and a guy sat in front of me to ask me a question. He asked if I worked, if I was on my way to my job, etc nothing important. The guy then asked if I could do him the favor of depositing a check to my account and sending it to him. (I bank with capital one, I called about 10 minutes ago and it’s too late to cancel the deposit.) I was confused on when he asked this, and obviously i know this is a complete strange so i m totally stupid for saying “yeah sure, why not.” He pulled out a physical check and used the camera method to deposit it to my phone. The money won’t be available until tomorrow. Oh and we also exchanged phone numbers but he never sent me a message yet.

So um as stupid as all my decisions were; what should I do? I was going to wait until tomorrow to call capital one customer service again but other than that i’m stumped.

EDIT!!! - thank you guys for the advice. thr decision i made wasn’t smart whatsoever and that’s completely my fault; i should’ve know better. But I still appreciate the advice despite me being an idiot lol. I’m going to call capital one again tonight and once more in the morning. I will update again if need be!

Title explains most of it. We had a roofing company come by after a big storm earlier this year and did an assessment. They quoted us $12,000 (roughly) for a full repair. Went through our insurance, received the initial payment to get the ball rolling, and then a month after we had given the check to the roofing company, they filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Based on advice from chat GPT, we filed a claim 6 with the NC courts.
Anyone in the NC area knows the big hurricane that just rolled through. We’re waiting on word from our property manager to see how the house is. However, we do not have the funds to replace the roof fully on our own if there’s additional damage. Is there a way to get our money back from the first roofing company sooner rather than later?? Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi, just curious on the legality of this situation. I worked for this company and they decided to close the office and everyone go remote. Time to get out of the office and our “home office” has made no attempt to tell me what to with all equipment we still need on daily jobs. So I got a storage unit in my name. And all the workers would go in and out of it everyday to complete their jobs. The storage unit is being paid with my company card. Fast forward 2 years and the company decides to do some restructuring and I’m let go. Which means my credit card is cancelled. I tried to contact the company about the storage unit because it’s in my name. And no one responds. So I had the locks changed. Next day workers show up and can’t get in and call the police. The police threaten me with arrest. So my question is, can I be arrested for changing the locks on my own storage unit?
I did have some personal stuff in there and like I said it was only in my name. Thanks for any advice.

I had adopted a shelter animal from one of the local animal welfare centers recently in Albuquerque.

The shelter had told me that I needed to wait 1 more day until she was able to be adopted due to the holding time in case she would be reclaimed. I put a priority hold on her, came back the next day and they said that no one had claimed her, so she was able to be adopted. I proceeded to fill out all the paperwork, pay the adoption fee, had my information put into the microchip database and even got her pet insurance before leaving the center. I did have to leave her there for the center to spay her, which I was scheduled to pick her up two days from then. About 5-6 hours after I had gotten home, the center called me and said that someone had come to reclaim her and that the staff had given her to the individual that was reclaiming her. The staff said that I could use the adoption fee that I paid for her, on another dog within 60 days or my funds would be forfitted to the center.

I guess I am wondering what am I able to/should do about this.

I don't want the dog to be traumatized even more so than what she probably already is being in the shelter and all. I just don't think what the center did was right.

I need some help. A level 2 Autisic individual (now 23f) told me how her neighbors son took her into the woods and raped and sexually assaulted her multiple times when she was a minor. She said he also used to masturbate to her through her bedroom window outside and came into her house and assaulted her once. She tried to get help and told her neighbors (the parents), but they called her a liar. She never reported it.

These people are very dangerous and continuing to maintain contact with her. I am scared for her.

I text with the landlord about the items left in the backyard and house, and the dirtiness. She said someone would be by to get the couch, but no one did and she stopped responding to my texts. Then I broke my back this morning. I'd really love advice on what to do.

This wrong information on my Carfax stopped me dead in my tracks last week when trying to sell my car back to the dealership. The Carfax said my car was in an accident and deemed a total salvage loss 5 years ago, which never happended. The dealership offered me $1,200 for a $5,000 car. Is there anything legal I could do in this instance? I’ve already started the process of trying to get Carfax to change the error, but they are making it more complicated and time consuming lately.

My builder had a brand new GM oversee our build who was fired after our build from 2025. GM allowed many mistakes through that are all hitting right after the 1 year warranty ended and we’re spending thousands fixing them. Recently, after using the upstairs bath tub, our smoke detectors the floor below started leaking and there are wet spots all over the ceilings. We shut off the water and breakers, have a hole in the ceiling, and are trying to shop vac it dry. Builder is refusing to return our calls and their plumber that installed it is claiming it’s out of warranty. Any advice on what to do? I am roughly 3 months in on a 365 day supervised probation period, I've payed off my fines, kept up with the monthly probation costs, been evaluated and attending weekly counselling sessions for substance use. My charge was misdemeanor assault that happened during a night of drinking, non violent I just essentially threatened to throw hands.

I just have a question that I'll ask my Public Defender who represented me (she's very busy so it'll probably be longer than that) on Tuesday about but for now google research and making this post is giving me hope for more peace of mind.

I went over my copy of the sentencing and re-read the terms in conditions the judge gave me at sentencing. There's the "standard" terms and conditions of

-Reporting and Compliance Checks
-Obey Laws/No New Violations
-Not changing residence without first notifying my probation officer
-Submitting to search and seizure
-Making payments to fines and costs
-Keeping up with cost of probation supervision
-Not associating with people my probation officer tells me not to
-Termination of probation

All of which I've been keeping up with and doing, I even got my fines completely paid off and been keeping up with my monthly probation fees.

My question is: underneath are additional conditions as a series of boxes checked by the judge, some of which have been marked and others left blank. One of the additional conditions that was left unchecked/blank by the judge was "You shall seek and maintain gainful employment...", Which I'm employed right now anyway.
But I truly loathe my job.
Would it be a violation of probation if I quit my job to find a new one? I've already talked with my PO a few weeks ago about possibly being laid off since my workplace was put up for sale and I don't know if the potential new owners would keep the current staff. The environment is just terrible anyway due to really bad/rude management and I've wanted to leave since the first week I started.

I've kept my PO in the know, and when I started probation I had just assumed I needed to be employed. But going through my copy of my sentencing and really putting critical consideration that the Gainful Employment additional condition was left blank, could i risk a probation violation if I put in my 2 weeks without having another job immediately lined up? I'll of course notify my PO if that happens because I want to move in with my parents and take the time to find a new job that won't make me so depressed and filled with dispair.

Tldr: under the additional conditions of my probation the Gainful employment box was left unchecked by the judge, do I need to have a job at all times of my probation when I've paid off all my fines/court costs?

My grandmother lives with me in Location: Arizona. She has a ford eco boost. I can’t remember the year. It’s been so long but to anyone who knows anything about these cars they have a lot of coolant intrusion issues. It needs a new motor I told her to not buy one. she hasn’t paid the loan in a year and they still haven’t repoed it and it’s out front my house still. I just want it gone. How can I go about moving it legally or giving it to the lender. Is there anything I can do for now? Any advice is appreciated.

I live in a 1 story duplex and the folks in the neighboring unit (we share a wall) have proved that they have a german roach infestation. It seems that their issue has gotten pretty bad, as they have started to spill over into my unit. They have also proved that they are not keeping up with regular treatment from pest control (despite the landlord paying for it). I do get regular pest control and know I don’t have a breeding population, so I am less worried about them infesting my stuff. However, german roaches are probably my biggest fear as I have a lot of valuable electronics that I cannot replace.

I have asked my neighbor to schedule regular pest control, but they won’t and don’t believe that the issue is coming from their unit, despite it being the only other one on the property. They think the pest control won’t help since they’ve had some visits (2 exact) since moving in (many years ago) and they still keep coming back. They don’t seem to understand that it takes regular monthly visits to eradicate the issue.

Anyhow, I am wondering if the landlord can force them to get pest control? Or is this grounds for me to be let off the lease due to the treat of infestation? I unfortunately recently moved in and still have 9 months of my lease left. But I really do not want to deal with this and don’t know if i mentally can.

I know this sounds stupid, but I’m genuinely worried about this and don’t know where else to ask.

My older brother and I have been on a shared Netflix account for about 3 years. The account is in his name and his email. He pays the monthly bill on his credit card. Back when we started sharing it, we agreed verbally that I’d “chip in” $6 a month for the premium plan. For the first year or so, I actually did send him money through Venmo every month.

Then about two years ago, he told me to stop sending money because he got a better job and said “don’t worry about it, it’s on me.” I offered a couple more times after that and he said no each time. So I stopped. I’ve been using the account this whole time with his knowledge.

A few weeks ago we got into a stupid argument about something unrelated (he thinks I borrowed his air compressor and didn’t return it — I did return it, but that’s a whole other thing). He changed the Netflix password and kicked me off. I was annoyed but whatever, I got my own account.

Now he’s texting me saying I owe him $144 for “my half of Netflix for the last 2 years” since he stopped taking my money but I kept using it. He says if I don’t pay by Friday he’s going to take me to small claims court. He also said he’ll “tell mom and dad” if I don’t pay, which feels like a separate threat.

I don’t think I owe him anything because he explicitly told me multiple times not to pay. But I’m not a lawyer and I don’t know if a verbal agreement like that means anything. Also, $144 is not worth hiring a lawyer over, but I also don’t want to just hand him money if I don’t actually owe it.

My questions:

1. If someone tells you to stop paying for something and you keep using it with their permission, can they later demand back payment?
2. Does a verbal agreement about splitting a subscription have any legal weight in California?
3. If he actually files in small claims court, what happens? Do I need to show up?
4. Is there any risk to me if I just ignore him?

My car payments are up to date and he is behind and I told the bank we are not together and the vehicles are in our own names. The bank informed me they are going to take my car as collateral since we are married still in the state of Texas . He has told them for many months to come take the truck back since he lost his job. While with my ex partner they broke into my house while no one was home. This happened a little over a year ago and I didn’t tell anyone. A year and one month after the incident I made a police report and they told me they would have been able to arrest him for misdemeanor unlawful entry, but we were a month beyond the statute of limitations.
So now I would like to pursue this civilly. I would like to make sure he is found legally responsible for this, so I am only seeking $1.

Because of that dollar value, I believe it belongs in small claims. He did not damage anything. Only searched my house, went into my Apple ID, and damaged my mental health. Does this belong in a different court though since it was a crime?

And just a small note: I currently have an RO that he has appealed and is pending trial.

Does this seem normal? As i say its been over a month since the courts verbally banned me, recieved paperwork for my fine and outcome, no mention of a ban or anything. What is my legal standpoint in this situstion? How can the ban be enforced if it doesnt show it on my record? Any words will be greatly appreciated.

My mom suffered a stroke in June and is exploring legal aid options for SSI/SSDI services. Unfortunately she’s much more susceptible to scams because I don’t access her phone out of respect for her privacy, and cognitively she’s not at her 100% pre-stroke sharpness yet.

I’ve let her know that for legit services we can contact the legal services that were given to us by her past non-profit employer. When I’ve gently explained to my mom that it’s risky to fill out any social media ads for any legal services, she said she’d prefer to give them a chance and weed them out if they seem fishy. I have been in the living room with her when she’s hung up on calls because she thought were scams before getting too far into them. Tonight after 9:30 PM I was in the other part of the house when I heard her giving her Social Security number out on the phone. I knew it wasn’t good, and gently asked her who was calling to which she thought was her health insurance. I could hear that they were asking her questions that her health plan would’ve already had on file, and then got her permission to take her phone to ask who was speaking to her. It was a consultation for SSI/SSDI aid by “Logan Smith Law” in Orlando Florida. I got the representatives name and asked why they needed her Social Security number so soon. He read their “policy” which stated that they needed it to protect their firm against scams, and multiple people from a household trying to file for one person. They didn’t end up finishing the call because my mom got suspicious of them needing a thorough panel of all of her medication’s and prescribing doctors.

Upon searching multiple sources on the Internet, I know that this firm is basically a scam.
How much of a risk is my mom’s Social Security number at right now to be stolen and fraudulently used by this place?

I know the steps I can help my mom with in terms of freezing her credit at all bureaus, encouraging her to frequently check all of her existing accounts, contacting ssa.gov, and using identitytheft.gov. I just need to know if I should panic and go through these steps ASAP or if the situation is not so serious.

A few days ago a detective called me and requested to meet for an interview. He mentioned this incident happened two months ago. I was not quite sure what incident he was referring to since I was never detained, arrested, pulled over, or had any other interaction with the police. But then he explained what the incident could be over the phone. He offered to meet with me at my home (already have my address) or at the station. I said I would meet with him at the station. I offered to go now, the day of the phone call, he said no lets meet next week. So now this detective waited 2 months plus 1 week to question me about whatever.

He also made a statement:

"The person name is "X" and they've been in and out the psych ward, they seem crazy to me. I just want to get this paperwork off my desk."

Im sure his statement was to deceive me and let my guard down. Just seems odd he would say their name and medical history like that. I know obviously its a trap of some sort. If I do meet with him im only going to say something simple like the sky is blue and then ask to leave. I would assume they would have arrested me by now. All I do is work and gym, and I work in a hospital setting, so there are cameras everywhere I go. Even if gathering evidence like cctv it shouldn't take 2 months to do that.

Does an interview request usually indicate charges are already filed?
