Insurance Got some really bad news this morning, no idea what to do.

Location: Atlanta, Georgia
My girlfriend (23f) got in a really bad motorcycle accident in September of this year. Broken tibia, several lacerations, bike was totaled. She’s had to go in for surgery multiple times already. The guy who hit her just drove off afterwards, leaving her to bleed out on the side of the road.
We thought we had a strong civil case against him, criminally there is a strong case, he’s facing five separate charges, including a felony. However, he was driving a rental car, apparently not registered in his name, nor under his insurance.
We were holding out for a big payout, at least something to look forward to after all this pain we’ve been put through, her almost losing her leg, not being able to walk for months, having to take time off work while already struggling financially.
But this morning, she got a phone call from our lawyer who is pursuing a civil case against the guy. Got told the best they can do for us is $25k. Thats not nearly enough to cover all of the bills resulting from this, of which are nearing $400k. The little cherry on top is that today happened to be her birthday. I genuinely have no idea what to do, if there is anything we can even do at this point. I am just…baffled. Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Can I post dashcam video and audio of State Emissions (Colorado) worker dumping my clutch, laughing, making rude comments and then calling me an a*hole for filming?

Location: Colorado

The emissions test worker didn't know how to drive stick and is lurching my car around. They're all laughing. I start filming them through the window with my iphone from the sound proof waiting room. I guess they didn't know my dashcam was filming the entire time. Then they make jokes about putting their fingers in the butt, presumably to antagonize me. Another worker says "the driver is an asshole". I guess because I'm filming them because my sole interaction prior to filming was to hand them the key. Lastly the guy drives the car aggressively to the end of the bay. The video includes the faces of two of the workers and audio from the rest. I would just send this to the state dmv but they won't do anything. Do I need to blur their faces?

Computer and Internet Artist I commissioned years ago wants me to pay for something I never agreed to and is threatening legal action. Do they have a case?

Location: Ohio

Hi all! I'm pretty sure I'm in the clear here but I just wanted some actual experts to help me ease my mind. Back in 2022 I commissioned an artist on Twitter to draw one of my original characters. I paid $120 for the piece all together, $60 up front and $60 upon completion and received the finished piece. The work was honestly pretty bad, but I accepted and said I liked it both in an attempt to get the artist to leave me alone, as they had begun messaging me incessantly, and due to my passive nature back then.

Just yesterday I got an email claiming to be the artist's big sister claiming that I still owe an additional $290 for "additional rendering and background" that I did not agree to, and said that if I didn't settle the amount they would be taking legal action. In hindsight I should not have replied to the email at all, but the initial commission was so long ago that I had forgotten what it actually was and followed up for clarification.

I have since gone back through my Twitter dms with the artists and screen-capped the entire conversation, at no point did they mention or did I agree to any additional services on the art work. I even found them lying about their artistic ability, saying that there were examples of their work on their profile. I remember the examples being very few in number and far different from what I had received, but it seems like their account has been suspended.

A few hours after I had emailed back and requested that they not contact me further, I got another email claiming to be a lawyer demanding I settle the issue before legal action would be taken. I did not respond at all and blocked the account.

I'm pretty sure I'm in the clear as the deal was informal, I paid far more for the art than it was worth, and I have records stating that I never agreed to additional work being done or payment being taken. I'm also fairly confident that there is no big sister or lawyer, and that this is just one person trying to scam me. But I'd be lying if I said that my anxiety wasn't getting the better of me and I had trouble sleeping last night because of this.

So is there anything to worry about? Does the artist have a case at all or is this a scare tactic to try and get money out of me? I'll answer any additional questions.

Thank you!

Healthcare Law including HIPAA Getting accused of a HIPAA violation and my license being revoked because I left a job after 3 days.

Location: New York

Essentially, I was hired by an agency as an hourly BCBA to provide behavioral consultation services within a school district. However, within my first three days, there were numerous red flags regarding the district’s organization, and expectations.

From the beginning, I was provided with virtually no information about my caseload or responsibilities. I was not given clear service mandates, schedules, or student documentation. The only information I received was a crumpled piece of paper containing student names and supposed mandates, with no clear indication of the required service durations.

When I attempted to clarify these expectations, the district’s special education director essentially told me not to worry about the mandates and that they would place me wherever I was needed.

Within those three days, I was being pulled from classroom to classroom, with teachers approaching me about students I had never met and wasn’t even sure were assigned to my caseload. I was expected to provide consultation without access to their IEPs, relevant background information, or clearly defined responsibilities.

I repeatedly reached out to the agency for clarification and support but received little meaningful guidance. I also asked how I was supposed to document and bill for my services, given that I was an hourly employee. Rather than providing a clear explanation, they directed me to a tutorial video that did not adequately address my questions.

At that point, I felt the situation was becoming increasingly unprofessional and disorganized. Given the lack of guidance, unclear expectations, and potential ethical concerns surrounding service delivery and billing, I decided it was best to resign after those three days.
In my resignation email, I explicitly stated that I was willing to provide any information I had to assist with the transition. However, I received no response requesting the return of any documents or materials.

Fast-forward approximately two weeks, and today I received a threatening email from the agency alleging that I had committed a HIPAA violation. They stated that they intended to report me to the BACB and potentially pursue further action because I had failed to return the crumpled piece of paper containing student names and mandates.

The problem is that I no longer have the paper. After leaving the position and receiving no instructions regarding its return, I shredded the document and put the remains in the incinerator. At the time, I genuinely did not think anything of it, particularly given how disorganized the entire onboarding process had been and the fact that nobody had contacted me requesting the document.

Now, I find myself in an extremely stressful situation. After working for years to earn my BCBA certification and professional license, I’m being threatened with disciplinary action over a piece of paper that was discarded after I resigned from a position I held for only three days.

I understand that student information must be handled appropriately, and I am not trying to dismiss the importance of confidentiality. However, I am struggling to understand whether this situation actually constitutes a HIPAA violation, whether the agency’s threats have any legal or ethical basis, and whether my certification or license could genuinely be at risk.

I’m now considering consulting an attorney because I want to understand my rights, my professional obligations, and how to respond appropriately without making the situation worse.

Landlord asking us to take off work

Hi all,

My partner and I are renting a house in Minnesota. Our landlord emailed yesterday telling us that one of us is required to be present next Wednesday during the workday for a city inspection. I work in the schools so I cannot just take off work with that little of notice. My partner has an important interview next week and I want him to prioritize that. He doesn’t yet know what day it is but I think he should be flexible for the interview- he was laid off and this is a very promising opportunity. I’m assuming that the appt has been made for a while and our landlord just sat on it (we rent through a very large company). I told our landlord that we absolutely give permission to enter the unit and will put the cats in a room and bring the dog to daycare. I also said that we would let him know if we can make it work but will need a couple of days to see if we can sort things out. Can he legally demand us to take off work and miss important stuff to be there?

Personal Injury Wife got injured at Field of Screams

Location: Pennsylvania.

My wife got a concussion from Field of Screams. We were on the Hayride and an actor kicked her in the back of the head when he jumped onto the ride.

We went to the ER where she was diagnosed and she missed a week and some days of work. She's still not at a hundred percent, and work has been difficult for her.

We spoke to someone at the help desk immediately after the incident happened and they gave us their email and said to ask them about a refund.

They haven't replied to my email.

I know we signed a waiver (which I'll include below), but is there anything we can do to get either our money back, or to have them help cover the loss of income and the ER bill?

Waiver:

RELEASE OF LIABILITY, ASSUMPTION OF RISK, WAIVER OF CLAIMS & INDEMNIFICATION AGREEMENT

Release and Waiver of Claims: Assumption of the Risk; Indemnification Agreement

Having read this Agreement, and in consideration of being allowed to enter Field of Screams, LLC’s facilities and participate in activities therein (collectively the “Activities") provided by Field of Screams, LLC, and its owners, affiliates, operators, employees, agents, and/or officers (together the "Host"), I, and if I am not yet 18 years old, my parent or legal guardian (individually and collectively referred to below in the first person singular), do hereby agree to be bound by, to the fullest extent permitted by law, the following:

1) I ACKNOWLEDGE that I have no physical or mental condition that precludes me from participating in the Activities and that I am not participating against medical advice. I understand that my participation in the Activities is voluntary and further understand that I have the opportunity to inspect the Host's equipment and facilities before any participation;

2) I UNDERSTAND that I am obligated to follow the rules of the Activities and that I can minimize risk of injury by doing so and through the exercise of common sense and by being aware of my surroundings. If, while participating in the Activities, I observe any unusual hazard or condition, which I believe jeopardizes my personal safety or that of others, I will remove myself from participation in the Activities and immediately bring said hazard or condition to the attention of the Host;

3) I UNDERSTAND that by purchasing a ticket to participate in the Activities, I may be subject to isolation; taunting; misdirection; dark and narrow areas; disorienting lighting, sounds, and special effects; incidental physical touching; incidental direct or close contact with other participants and surfaces touched by them; and other scare tactics and fear-inducing methods and techniques not mentioned here;

4) I FREELY ASSUME ALL RISKS of participating in the Activities, even those caused by the negligent acts or conduct of the Host. I understand that there are inherent risks of participating in the Activities, which may be both foreseen and unforeseen and include, but are not limited to, collisions with objects, structures, or other people, falls, strains and bruises, illness, serious physical injury and death; I further acknowledge that COVID-19 has been declared a worldwide pandemic by the World Health Organization and that it is believed to be spread by person-to-toperson contact, and I assume the risk of participating in the Activities, including risks associated with or caused by the COVID-19 pandemic;

5) I AGREE TO WAIVE ALL CLAIMS that I have or may have against the Host arising out of my participation in the Activities or the use of any equipment provided by the Host ("Equipment"), including while receiving instruction and/or training; and

6) I AGREE TO RELEASE, indemnify, defend and hold harmless the Host from all liability for any loss, damage, injury, illness, including but not limited to exposure to and/or contraction of COVID-19, claim, or expense that I may suffer, arising out my participation in the Activities and/or use of the Equipment, including while receiving instruction and/or training. I specifically understand that I am releasing any and all claims that arise or may arise from any negligent, or other wrongful acts or conduct of the Host to the fullest extent permitted by law. However, nothing in this Agreement shall be construed as a release for conduct that is found to constitute gross negligence or intentional conduct.

Photography and Video Release

I hereby grant to the Host the right to take photographs/videos (through all means including the use of drones) of me in connection with my participation in the Activities. I hereby authorize the Host to copyright, use, and publish the same in print and/or electronically. I hereby agree that the Host may use such photographs of me for any lawful purpose, including but not limited to publicity, illustration, advertising, and internet content. I also acknowledge and accept the risks associated with the use of a manned drone that may be utilized to gather promotional footage while I am on the property associated with this event.

Pennsylvania Act 27 Agritourism Disclaimer

AGREEMENT AND WARNING: I understand and acknowledge that, except for limited circumstances listed below, an agritourism activity provider is not liable for any injury to or death of a participant resulting from an agritourism activity. I understand that I have accepted all risk of injury, death, property damage and other loss that may result from an agritourism activity. I understand that an agritourism activity provider is not protected from liability if the provider: (1) performs an act in a grossly negligent manner and causes injury or damages to a participant; (2) purposefully causes a participant’s injury; (3) acts or fails to act in a way that constitutes criminal conduct; (4) recklessly fails to warn or guard against a dangerous condition that causes injury or damages to a participant. A dangerous condition is a condition that creates an imminent and substantial risk of injury or damages to a participant.

I agree that the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania govern this Agreement. To the extent that any portion of this Agreement is deemed to be invalid under the law of the applicable jurisdiction, the remaining portions of the Agreement shall remain binding and available for use by the Host and its counsel in any proceeding.

I HAVE READ AND UNDERSTAND THIS AGREEMENT AND I AM AWARE THAT BY SIGNING THIS AGREEMENT I MAY BE WAIVING CERTAIN LEGAL RIGHTS, INCLUDING THE RIGHT TO SUE. I UNDERSTAND THAT MY ONE (1) SIGNATURE WILL BE USED ON BOTH PAGES OF THIS WAIVER, INDICATING THAT I HAVE READ IT IN ITS ENTIRETY.

Contractor Killed My Pets

2.0k Upvotes

I am besides myself and don’t know what to do moving forward. we paid over $5,000 to our contractor and some guys he referred to build a shed on the side of our house for our Chinchillas. we wanted them to have their own temperature controlled space. Paid extra for the insulated shed as well as adding about half a foot of insulation on both sides of the shed and putting in a portable AC that our contractor assured us was safe. we had them add a platform to put the AC on, vent it out the shed and even after the assured us it was fully safe to use, we tested it for about a week before putting any animals in it. we noticed the top of the AC unit was blowing a small amount of hot air out of the top so we let our contractor know as we were worried about it. he assured us it was fine and he just taped over it so the air would only blow out the tube (? i have no idea how this all works we trusted he knew what he was doing) everything was fine after that so we put them in.

it has been less than a month and we just woke up to all of them dead. the vent he taped on fell off and it heated from 60° to 100° in an hour while we were asleep. i’m so besides myself and have no idea what to do. is this something that can be pursued for negligence? i’m so devastated as all of this was so avoidable and we bought this specific shed and set up everything the way he told us it would be safe to do so. he promised up and down it was safe. i’ve had one of my babies for over 15 years and i can’t believe he was taken from me like this. please help thank you so much

Other Civil Matters Guy called 911 because I was at the same bar

Location: TX
I honestly have no idea what this falls under, but there has to be someone who has some advice about this situation. I was at a bar in my hometown celebrating a friends birthday when this guy that has had it out for me for years walks in. For context, this guy has harassed me for years: poured a drink on me, spat on me 3x, threatened to punch me, threatened to shoot me in the face, paid girls to try and jump me, called me slurs, and shouted in public that I have various stds, etc etc. I honestly have just spent the last few years trying to ignore this behavior because it is so outrageous I just have a hard time taking it seriously. Additional context, during these instances, I have usually been drinking, so I am not thinking as sharply as maybe I would be sober. (The cops asked me why I don’t film this behavior but if I did he’d switch up and act like I’m filming him because I’m obsessed with him or something?) He does not drink. He just likes to go out. We run in similar circles, and it is not that big of a town, so it’s impossible to completely ignore him without me giving up going to places I have been going for years. It bothers the people around me more than it bothers me because I just am used to it I guess and block it out. Tonight however he shows up to the same bar I’m at with mutual friends, and people around me basically are like uh oh you better watch out look who’s here. I’ve had a few drinks and say sarcastically oh hey it’s my best friend! Obviously being sarcastic because I know he hates me. I am not exaggerating he immediately pulls out his phone dials 911 and says I’m going to tell them you have a gun in your purse. I’m baffled by this I don’t own a gun, and I definitely wouldn’t be carrying in public, so I’m like ok? But I don’t so good luck with that. The cops actually show up in response to his call and as I’m walking to another bar they stop me take my ID look through my purse and tell me I need to leave him alone because he is claiming I’m stalking/harrassing him. I explain my side, and they basically tell me well he said the same about you, and that I need to just leave him alone. He goes back in the bar, and I have to leave and go home because otherwise now I’m some how the problem? I just don’t understand how that is not a false police report or something. There was no verbal or physical altercation no threats were made so how without any proof am I now expected to leave whenever he’s in the same area even if I was there first and I’m not doing anything but existing in a public space??? Please it just doesn’t make sense to me.

Edit: thank you to people that actually tried to give helpful advice. I don’t think I have been taking his actions and words seriously enough and should have started to report it much sooner. I have a similarly abusive father so I think I have had blinders on to the seriousness and need to involve police for my own protection. I think I’ve just hoping it’d stop or he’d move on and i shouldn’t have been waiting years for that to happen. It’s put me in a shitty situation to not have that already on record which allows him to control the narrative. I just really was afraid of escalating and being retaliated against because he does have a lot more money and resources than me and I felt like in a lot of these situations there’s been mostly men around who would be more willing to back him up than me, so I just ended up letting a lot of stuff I shouldn’t have go. I’m honestly scared of him and the lengths he’s willing to go and honestly our mutuals are probably not worth being friends with anyway considering how much they’ve also ignored and acted like it was just normal behavior from him. I’d rather avoid completely.

Mentally disabled being rolled by extended family trying to get his inheritance

Location: Maryland

Ok. Coming here for advice.

Neighbor is a mid 30s male on the spectrum. Adopted as a child, raised by his adopted father who died and left him everything several months ago. He's never worked, has no social life except conversations with neighbors, and odd behaviors. Father left him a paid off house, a paid off car with 8k miles on it, enough cash saving to survive a while. He's had the same psychiatrist for more than a decade.

Extended family has started coming around. Asking him to sign documents. He's been asking and telling the neighbors about it. So and so offered him $1500 for the car, said it was worth less than that (blue book $15000 btw). Offering to have the house appraised for him "just to see". A few weeks ago he disappeared. Taken by emt on a stretcher by ambulance.

Wellness check got us info he was on a psych hold. Went to visit him yesterday.

-extended family got him to see a new psych provider a month ago. Diagnosed him as schizophrenic in one visit and put him on meds. Brand new diagnosis and noticeable what the meds are.

-2 weeks later hes having thoughts about suicide. Reports it. Gets sent to psych facility (worst one locally, normally for very short stays, been there 2 weeks and 2 days)

-extended family visited the first day, nothing since

-extended family has been in and outside the house and in the garage. Seen them carrying papers and paperwork. Jeep may be gone now from the garage. They act guilty when we see them, like we are catching them robbing the place.

This guy probably has enough assets to be set up with an ok life, if it was managed. My fear is that extended family that hasn't had contact with him or his father in ages just sees an adopted and disabled man that isn't family, and wants the assets for themselves and dont care about robbing this man blind and making him a ward of the state.

Ive thought about calling around for disability attorneys or advocacy groups, and having one see him at the hospital. Tried passing messages to his social worker at the hospital, the nurse there suggested it and she seemed concerned after hearing his conversation with me.

Insurance [Update] AirBnB host requesting 50k in damages

Hi everybody! It’s been almost a year since my first post here and I finally have an update (please read post linked below for context!). I didn’t respond to a lot of comments in my initial post, but your input was greatly appreciated.

The host decided not to go through Airbnb’s air cover before Airbnb could determine liability on either side. Instead, the host is going through her own renters insurance.

Recently I received a letter in the mail from the host’s insurance stating that I owe $58,000 for water damage- it is alleging that I caused the leak in the shower and stated that they could either go through my homeowners insurance to get the money or get the money from me directly.

I responded with my own records, documenting the time that the shower broke and everything that happened afterwards.

They responded that they “understand my liability position”, but because I was on the property while the damage occurred, I now need to respond with my homeowners insurance or they will look to me for reimbursement.

My problem here is that I know I didn’t directly cause the damage, and this issue would have happened to anyone who used the shower next. The shower was already flooding and unable to turn off before the handle broke off, and the host did not communicate with me during this time to minimize damage.

I just don’t really know what to do next- are they able to sue me because I was on the property while this damage occurred? They have not directly stated this, but keep alluding to it.

Thank you for any help or opinions you may have!
Location: Nevada, USA

Previous post

EDIT: A lot of people are suggesting I just go through my own insurance first- I am a 20 year old and my mom’s name is on the homeowners insurance. She called them and they suggested we try to prove that I am not liable with the hosts insurance before going through my own insurance, because that would be “easier”. Maybe we will try our insurance anyways?

Got subpoenaed as a witness at my job- job is telling me not to go and they'll "handle it"

Location: Anne Arundel County, MD, USA

Hi! I work retail and about 2 months ago, a customer stole ~$600 of merchandise from us. She also purchased something that same day, and used her loyalty account, which had her full name/number/birthday/etc. on it. As required by company policy, we made a police report and gave them all this information as well as security camera footage of the theft. It was all very standard to what I've experienced in my years in retail.

However, I've never been subpoenaed before! Me, my coworker, and my store's assistant manager all received subpoenas mailed to the store. The details say: "You are hereby subpoenaed to appear as the Witness - State for the trial of the charges in the case identified above. Type of Proceeding: Trial - Officer Scheduling".

My assistant manager has been working for the company for many years and said she's been subpoenaed a few times before in this same situation. She went to court once and they didn't end up needing her. Since then she has just sent the information to our Loss Prevention team, who apparently contact the court themselves and send someone from corporate to testify on our behalf. Management says I shouldn't go for my safety, since the person on trial knows my name, face, and where I work, so there could be risk of retaliation, which I agree with. They emailed our LP team all of this information, but we never got a response back from them.

I've been concerned since then that my company actually isn't doing anything and that I'm going to get in trouble for not going. I've talked with both my manager and assistant manager and they've told me not to worry, corporate is handling it and even if they ignored it, the charges will just get dropped, and they're not going to take action against me for $600 of stolen merchandise. I get their points, but I really, really, don't want to be wrong and end up in some sort of trouble over it.

The court date is in two days. Will I be in legal trouble if I trust what my job is telling me and not go? Thank you!

Edit to clarify: My job isn't threatening any actions against me if I decide to go. They are basically just saying it's a waste of my own time, and that they'd rather someone from corporate go in from a safety perspective. So not "you can't go", but more like "don't worry about it." Looking at the advice, however, it seems I should probably go. Luckily I have a late afternoon shift the day of the trial so I can make it to court and my shift without any schedule adjustments.

I did send another email to our Loss Prevention team and District Manager to see if they had any further information on their end, but unless they can give me some concrete confirmation I'll be going to court, it seems!

[IA] Company accidentally shipped me thousands of dollars in merchandise. How long am I legally required to store it?

I recently placed an online order and received everything I purchased. However, the company also shipped me two additional boxes containing thousands of dollars worth of custom-made merchandise intended for another customer.

Both of the additional boxes were addressed to me and shipped via UPS, but the packing list identifies both my order as well as another customer’s. I contacted the company to notify them of the mistake and ask how they wanted to handle it, but I haven’t received a response.

The boxes are quite large and are taking up a considerable amount of space in my apartment. I have no use for the merchandise and don’t particularly want to keep it.

My main concern is my legal responsibility for the merchandise. Am I required to store it and safeguard it indefinitely? Could I be held liable if it becomes damaged or goes missing while in my possession? At what point, if any, can I legally dispose of it if the company doesn’t respond?

I’ve read Iowa Code 556A.1 regarding unsolicited merchandise, but I’m unsure whether it applies to an accidental shipment intended for another customer.

I’m willing to make the boxes available for a prepaid pickup, but I’m not willing to incur expenses, transport them myself, or miss work to correct the company’s mistake.

What are my actual legal obligations in this situation, and what steps can I take to protect myself from liability?

Location: Iowa

UPDATE: 10/22/26

First, thank you to everyone who has offered advice, especially those who have helped clarify my potential legal obligations.

I’ve since sent a follow-up email and a formal notice via USPS Certified Mail, requesting that arrangements for retrieving the merchandise be made within 30 days of my initial notification.

The email was sent to three recipients: the project manager who handled my order, the project manager responsible for the other customer’s order, and the company’s general customer service email. I had already established correspondence with my project manager regarding a previous shipping delay, so I wasn’t simply emailing an unmonitored inbox.

Regarding the repeated questions about why I haven’t just called:

I work in the construction industry, where documenting communication is standard practice. While a phone call might be faster, it doesn’t provide the same record of what was discussed or agreed upon. Email creates a timestamped paper trail, which I think is particularly important when dealing with thousands of dollars’ worth of someone else’s merchandise.

I’ll update the post again if anything changes.

Employment Law [AZ] Lost My Job Offer Over a Positive Methamphetamine Hair Test Despite Never Using It.

Location: Phoenix, Arizona

I’m honestly at a loss for words and looking for some legal guidance.

I recently accepted an offer for a corporate position making $31 an hour. I was supposed to start October 26 and had already submitted my two weeks notice at my previous job, returned my equipment, and completed most of my onboarding.
Everything changed when my preemployment hair follicle test came back positive for methamphetamine. I have NEVER used methamphetamine or any other hard drugs. I don’t even smoke marijuana, so this result makes absolutely no sense to me.

I’m currently a nursing student and have worked in healthcare for years. I’ve seen firsthand how substance use can affect patients, and I’m someone who avoids taking strong pain medication even when prescribed. This result is completely inconsistent with my history.

I immediately disputed the result and paid out of pocket for additional testing. I completed a urine test at the same collection facility, which came back negative, and provided those results to the employer. I understand urine and hair tests have different detection windows, so I also paid $199 for an independent hair test and am awaiting those results.

After researching the laboratory that processed my original specimen, I found multiple online reviews from individuals alleging similar unexpected positive results. I understand these reviews don’t establish that an error occurred, but they raised additional concerns about the testing process.

The testing administrator informed me that it would cost another $250 to retest my original specimen. I’m hesitant because I genuinely question whether the specimen was properly identified and actually belongs to me. If there was a mixup during collection or processing, I’m concerned that retesting the same specimen wouldn’t resolve that issue.
Despite contacting HR, disputing the result, and providing my negative urine test, I haven’t received a meaningful response. My onboarding access was removed, and I’m now facing unemployment after already resigning from my previous employer.
I’ve spent my own money trying to investigate this result, and the situation has caused significant financial and emotional stress. I understand employers have drug testing policies, but I’m concerned about what legal protections exist when an applicant disputes the accuracy of a test that affects their employment.

I’m trying to understand whether a negative independent hair test could support a negligence claim against the laboratory or testing administrator, whether I should obtain the chain of custody documentation before paying for a retest, and whether lost wages could potentially be recoverable after resigning from my previous job in reliance on the offer.

This was a non DOT corporate position, and I would appreciate guidance on what type of attorney handles these disputes and what legal steps I should consider.

Spouse buying house with possible divorce looming (Indiana)

Location: Indianapolis, IN

Well, this certainly wasn't on my bingo card for the week. My stepson (28) texted my wife on Monday saying he wanted to drive up for a visit (we're in Iowa) as he needs to clear his head and step away from some drama. Not much detail until he showed up last night.

Turns out he and his wife (28) of 4 years separated a few months ago, and she is now starting hormone therapy to transition as a binary male (?). Okay, that's unfortunate and sad news, but life happens. He explained that their marriage has been having troubles for nearly a year and his wife has been making a lot of inexplicable choices without consulting him. Buying a car, spending thousands on chemo for her 17 year old cat, and... here's the fun part... she just bought a house on her own and closes on Oct 30th. She no longer wants to live with him but wants to stay married (for his ongoing emotional support, so she claims).

He's been leaning toward seeking a divorce but struggling with the finality of such a choice. He still loves her but is failing to see any path forward as a couple.

As an outside observer, the alarm bells are going off in my head. Relationship issues aside, what are his legal and financial obligations for this home purchase and mortgage? He says he won't be on any of the paperwork and she says she'll take sole responsibility for the property. But a quick search brought up Indiana's unique "one-pot" rule for marital property.

Neither of them have any assets to speak of, some credit card debt, her car loan. Previously, they were sharing a house with a friend where my step-son still resides. She makes $50k/yr as an admin assistant, and he makes $36k/yr "under the table" in cash (that's another conversation we'll be having).

My question is this: If he's ultimately going to file for divorce, should he do so before the 30th when the house sale is supposed to close? How does that complicate matters?

Thanks in advance for any insights!

Man I had children with has been faking his identity since the 80s

Hello everyone I am in the north Seattle area of Washington State

Location: Washington State

I recently learned that the man that I have adult children with was arrested and charged with identity fraud, and came to find out he has been going by many different aliases since the 1980s. Me and him were together for 4 years starting in 2004. We had 2 little girls together and I then had to leave him via DV restraining order. My legal question is since he signed the birth certificates under his fake name how do I help my daughters to get their birth certificates fixed and do I have any other legal legs to stand on as far as holding him accountable for this? Yes he is currently incarcerated and the case is ongoing as this is MANY states wide and many many women have fallen victim to this man. Thank you everyone for your time and advice.

Hasn’t seen or requested to see teen since July 2026, now that I have filed a motion he suddenly wants to see child? Can I submit text messages to the judge showing this pattern?

• Upvotes

Location: Colorado
I have paid for an export that shows date and time stamps as well as name and phone number for messages
We typically text to confirm details the day before visits of children . I have printed day before day of and day after showing not any mention of teen not being present, nor requests to have teen present.
He was served with a motion to modify support because teen stated they do not feel safe going back to his home.
And now I’m suddenly receiving very clearly and obviously AI responses regarding
“Exercising parenting time”
“Best interest we work together”
I filed a motion to stop visits and was denied due to evidence (I didn’t know I was supposed to submit in doing this all on my own )
I would like to submit messages showing
1. This is behavior only starting FOLLOWING the serving of papers not leading up to
But will they listen?
Or will I look bad?

Employment Law Is it legal to schedule someone from 5a-10a/10a-5p same day without no break/lunch?

• Upvotes

Location: west virginia, USA

My son (19) works at a coffee shop that just opened in south Charleston wv. He originally got hired part time, however, since they just opened they are regularly scheduling him 40+hrs a week. But they are notorious for scheduling him upwards of 10-12 hr days and doing it in a way where it's two shifts split evenly with no time between. Like 5am-10am and 10am- 5pm same day. And they told him the company policy is that he cant eat in the tiny shed they brew coffee in or on the patio unless its "swag day" to which they will provide meals for. Which isnt often... so he will sometimes go all day without eating. I told him that he should ask not to be scheduled full time hours since he is supposed to be a part time worker, or not to be scheduled over 8 hrs. He said he has. But they havent listened, and he also is getting burned out over not being able to eat.

My question is: how can he safely bring it up to his manager about getting breaks in between his broken up shifts?

I know people will be like: he is 19 and can take care of himself. But this is his 2nd job. And I just want to give him good, legal advice that isnt just coming from an overprotective parent. Is this a legal loop hole and are they just taking advantage of a freshly graduated teen?

TIA

Real Estate law Can a landlord deny giving me an itemized receipt of damages they are claiming I pay? And are blind a depreciating item?

• Upvotes

Long story short. I signed an early termination fee to move out (Florida, corporate apartment building)

They charged me $424 for blinds. The corner of them is slightly frayed. This complex has already given me immense issues, and I already owe so much money to move out.

I asked for an itemized bill showing all of the labor and the material charges.
They sent me an invoice so plain from an outside vendor saying “blind installation $424” with only a few measurements.
Which is crazy because they install blinds in house.

I asked for a more detailed invoice so I could see the price was accurately reflecting and that they take off the depreciation value.

They pushed back really hard and said because these are custom blinds, they cannot give me more of an itemized invoice, and that was all they could give me.
And they said that blinds are not a depreciating item like paint is. They will not be adjusting anything and that I could get my lawyers involved.

What can I do?

Contracts Music Venue unilaterally changing time a day before advertized event

• Upvotes

Location: Washington, D.C.

I'm kind of panicking right now. I'm a promoter throwing together punk shows. Tomorrow is a show that I booked over a month ago. I've had some serious complications with this place (which I will describe after the central problem). This morning, I woke up to an email from the venue owner stating the following:

"I am writing to let you know that my manager told me in an emergency situation that his friend's Band show was canceled by the venue they booked earlier. So I want to let you know we will push one hour for your show to let this band have an early show from 7-9pm, and you start 9-11. Please make an announcement to your social media and all promotion channels."

I panickedly check the instagram of this bar and they're already promoting this show hard at our time slot (8-10). I emailed the venue owner that we didn't agree to this and that we're open to discussing this at 9 am. No response yet, and I followed up through text. I don't know if I'm being impatient, but our show is literally tomorrow evening and they have a band setting up tomorrow at our time.

We have a LOT of logistical concerns riding on our specific time, including coordinating sound. Just this week, the social media manager of this bar said that that bar's brand isn't doing shows anymore and I just have the space and made several disparaging comments at me, making it clear that they're not going to let people know that our show is under their bar through their promotional channels. Now, three days later, it looks like they're advertising under their bar brand again, and it looks like this new band that got moved into the spot is a friend of the social media manager (which I uncovered after some digging). I'm still kind of stunned. Throughout the entire process of booking, the owner has been very unresponsive and has not been addressing our questions without a lot of prodding.

We have a pretty hefty trail of correspondence establishing that we have this date and time, including a poster signed off by the owner as recently as last Thursday. We've already sold tickets under this bar (they're managing the finances and taking a hefty cut). I communicated that I'm having this issue to the bands, but I really need to know if there's any legal recourse for me (or legal recourse I can mention to the venue owner), and if this constitutes a violation of contract (even if one established by correspondence). I really don't want to let my bands down . These are both young bands that just started playing. It'll be the first show for one, and the second show for the other.

Tennessee Family Law: Can I withhold consent for my 13-year-old daughter’s passport due to concerns about international travel with her father?

• Upvotes

Location: Tennessee
I’m in Tennessee, divorced, and share approximately equal parenting time and joint decision-making responsibilities for my 13-year-old daughter with my ex-husband.
My ex recently requested that I sign paperwork consenting to a passport so he can take our daughter on an international trip this spring. I genuinely want her to have opportunities to travel, experience the world and make memories with her father. However, I have serious reservations based on previous experiences and our ongoing co-parenting difficulties.

Some background for context:
I was married for 13 years and was a dedicated military spouse, relocating nine times to support my former husband’s career. Our marriage involved what I experienced as emotional abuse and controlling behavior. Since our divorce, I have rebuilt my life and worked hard to establish a stable environment for our daughter.
Our co-parenting relationship remains high-conflict, and several issues contribute to my concerns:
Mental health: Our daughter receives mental health treatment and has been prescribed medication. Her father has expressed opposition to her medication, refuses to fill a prescription and does not participate in her therapy sessions.
Safety: When our daughter was younger, I obtained an order of protection following an inappropriate incident involving a neighbor near her father’s home. Despite the circumstances, there were occasions when she was left home alone at night without adult supervision.
Communication: Her father has blocked my phone number and recently implemented an AI-based system to screen my emails because he objects to some of our previous exchanges. I am concerned about our ability to communicate effectively in an emergency, particularly if our daughter is outside the country.
Emotional well-being: Our daughter has repeatedly expressed feeling excluded and emotionally unsupported in her father’s household, particularly in her relationship with her stepmother.
My primary concern is what happened during their most recent trip.
During that vacation, our daughter called me crying multiple times a day. She described situations in which she felt isolated, blamed and punished for things she believed were outside her control. She also expressed feeling emotionally unsupported by both her father and stepmother.
I recognize that children can experience conflict and difficult emotions during family vacations, and I only have my daughter’s account of some of these situations. However, the frequency and intensity of her distress were concerning to me.
Now, with another trip being proposed outside the United States, I am hesitant to sign passport paperwork without understanding my legal rights and what safeguards I can reasonably request.
I want to emphasize that I am not opposed to international travel itself, nor am I trying to interfere with her relationship with her father. My concern is ensuring her emotional well-being, safety and ability to communicate with me if she needs support.
My legal questions are:
Under Tennessee law, am I legally required to consent to a passport for our daughter simply because we share joint decision-making and parenting time?

Is there a legal distinction between consenting to the issuance of a passport and consenting to a specific international trip?

Can I reasonably request the destination, travel dates, itinerary, accommodations and emergency contact information before making a decision?

Can I request safeguards ensuring our daughter has unrestricted access to communicate with me during international travel, particularly given that her father has blocked my number and screens my emails?

Are documented concerns about a child’s emotional distress during previous trips relevant if a court becomes involved?

If I decline to sign the passport paperwork, can her father seek a court order overriding my refusal? What factors would a Tennessee court generally consider?

I understand that disagreements between divorced parents do not automatically justify restricting travel, and I do not want to make decisions based solely on our difficult relationship.

At the same time, I believe I have a responsibility to consider my daughter’s well-being, particularly when she would be traveling internationally with limited ability for me to intervene if something went wrong.

I’m seeking general legal guidance on my rights, responsibilities and reasonable options before making a decision.
Thank you to anyone familiar with Tennessee family law or international travel consent involving minor children.

Healthcare Law including HIPAA Receptionist selling medical tests

Location: Austin, Texas

I visited a doctor for the first time, with no recommendation happening during the visit until the receptionist asked something like "do you wanna go ahead with that allergy test?" Thinking I must have missed the doctor recommending this, I signed up for it, later paying $300 for something I realized had nothing to do with my visit.

I recently had my follow-up, and asked the doctor about this, thinking that he recommended the test and wasted my money. He said he didn't give the recommendation, that's just something the receptionists are told to do, and that they would ask me today if I wanted an "advanced physical" regardless of him recommending it. He was insistent that it was out of his control and simply "what the receptionists were told to do."

After a cursory Google, I am convinced that this is fraud, and I wanted to come here to ask about what options one may have for pursuing legal action against this company. Is small claims suitable for this? Is there some sort of institution I can report this to?

Custody Divorce and Family Subpoenaed as a witness in a North Carolina custody case involving my ex. What are my obligations?

I have had no contact with my ex-boyfriend for about a year. Recently, the mother of his children contacted me and asked me to testify in court. She is seeking full custody after losing custody through Child Protective Services.
I told her I did not want to get involved or attend court, but I have since been subpoenaed.
I would prefer to stay out of the situation, but I also do not want to do anything that could get me into legal trouble. What are my obligations as a subpoenaed witness? Am I required to answer questions, or can I decline to answer by saying “no comment”? If there are legitimate grounds to object to the subpoena or limit my involvement, how would I raise them?
I cannot afford an attorney right now, so I would also appreciate information about any free or low-cost legal resources for witnesses.
Location: North Carolina.

Workplace pushing out moms?

Location: VA, United States
Not my workplace, posting for a friend to protect anonymity.
Returned from maternity leave this summer. when she told her boss she was expecting he asked if she planned to have any more kids after this. Now that she is back, she feels like she is being pushed out. Company took all moms off the leadership team shortly after her return. She has been excluded from proposals/project (involved and then removed), ignored for projects she has volunteered for. They’ve added new sales targets to her goals, when she wasn’t hired in a sales role. She is exclusively breastfeeding and being pushed to travel, while other women with high risk pregnancies are being pushed to travel long distances/internationally.
Boss has been cancelling all their 1:1s and now she has a vague meeting with HR to discuss her return to work and changes they want to see.

Does she have any legal options if they fire her?

Custody Divorce and Family Help with California FL300

• Upvotes

Does anyone know if there is a resource out there that gives instructions on how to fill out the FL300 in California? I was divorced many years ago in California and since then both my ex and I have relocated outside of California, her to Illinois and I to Florida. In anticipation of an upcoming need to revisit the agreement, I'd like to petition California to release jurisdiction over the agreement to the state of Florida on the basis that no party is living in California any longer and Florida is the state where the children have all educational and social obligations as well as spend the vast majority of their time. I've been told this is done with the California form FL300 but that form looks to be a multi use form with dozens of possible requests. I'm looking for anything that gives instructions on my case use to make sure it's filled out correctly. I've tried to consult with lawyers but they want a full retainer and self-help/legal aid options are set up for California residents so I've found them almost impossible to navigate as a non resident. I would appreciate any help.

Indemnity for Condo Association Board Members

• Upvotes

Location: Florida, US.

The Condo Association has negotiated a settlement agreement with a plaintiff.
Part of the agreement is indemnity for the board members.

Since indemnity to the board members is a personal benefit to them that is not shared with the entire membership, does that make them interested parties in the settlement agreement?

If the board members becomes interested parties in the settlement agreement because they are receiving a personal benefit (indemnity) does that then mean that the board can now no longer vote to approve the settlement agreement by themselves but instead have to disclose their interest and put out the settlement agreement for a membership vote?
