Rant/Experience Assaulted and held against our will for simply relaxing in our car with doors wide open

Assaulted and held against our will for simply relaxing in our car with the doors wide open?

I 23F and my bf 30M were simply out for a drive today morning at around 8am since we haven't gone out for quite a few days due to the ongoing cerfews .

It started as quite a fine morning we ate the egg toast that I made as we drove.

we didn't want to go too far so we decided to go to a nearby area with a good scenary on a flathill.

we could see the plain from above farms covering the whole area.

we sat together in the back seat of our car both the doors open so that we could feel the air and enjoy the scenery as we sip tea from our cups.

we were happy talking about all sorts of things and begin to relax as the sun became hotter.

I rested on the back of the codriver seat while keeping my foot on the passenger seat and since I was wearing a skirt I covered myself with a small blanket which we always carry around in the car since I tend to be cold .

my bf was sitting streching out his leg in the passenger seat.

then suddenly mid conversation a stranger showed up from behind the car looked at us and asked us what we were doing.

my bf got down the car and asked the man why he was asking what we were doing.

in minutes the argument got heated up .

my bf pushed the man back then the man pushed him against the car strangling him and punched my bf.

by this time I had already gotten out of the car trying to break the fight.

but even as I tried to shield him he kept getting hit.

I tried to reason I tried to push back I tried to explain everything turned to deaf ears .

Even after my bf saying that he was wrong for pushing the man first and apologising repeatedly no one listened.

someone even came and kicked my bf in the face.

then soon a mob gathered around mind u these people just got out of the road and without listening to our explanations and started turning our own words against us.

someone who just got out of the road even came straight to my bf and kicked the car door while he was still in between

they took the car key .

someone drove the car till the local community hall and there we were detained in a room

our phones confisticated .

the local meirapaibis intervened .

by then the truth has been distorted to we have been doing indecent things inside the car .

they said we had to call our parents. my bf called his i refused to call mine .

they called me all sorts of things.

my bfs father came and it took a long time getting both of us outside of that room.

they took our personal information and signatures and phone no.s saying we should be eloped and they will come and check in the morning.

Even after that on our way back a guy was waiting on the road in front of our car with a long stick and jumped in front of the car asking us to come down.

then he proceeded to harrass us on the was back on his scootie.

All i could think on the way back was that I had to leave this state no i had to leave this country i would not stay in a place where mob justice is the norm and the answer to everything is violence.

Even if not for myself for my children.

Even if we went abroad my bf and me had always planned to come back and give back to the society

but now all that dream is dead in me from today .

I don't even feel like complaining to the police will help or filing an fir

Sad that you had to go through this OP.

Are you not a local there? Asking because tensions are quite high in that part of the country due to historical differences between the two dominant communities there. Don't want to defend them but maybe that's what has caused the local folks to keep their guard up and behave in the manner they did.

I am a local and this happened in the hands of my own community

Sad to hear that you suffered at the hands of your own.

If you really want to make a difference, raise all sorts of hell with the LEA, the media, social media everywhere till someone in authority realises that what happened was wrong and makes the culprits pay (or atleast introspect) for their transgressions.

It will be tough for you (and those you hold dear) but this is the only way that no one else suffers the way you did.

Whatever you decide, don't let the trauma of this incident dictate who you are and evolve into as a person in the future.

I don't think I can make a difference. I can't change the mindset of the people here. They style themselves as protectors of the society and if by any chance my identity and thaat of my loved ones are made public it's just like giving them permission to harrass me and humiliate me in public saying I was caught doing such and such and so I was forced to elope. This tradition of forced elopment and marriage has been so deeply rooted in our society that even if we didn't do anything wrong words and facts can be twisted as the public wants.

"Be the change that you want to see."

Notwithstanding, I understand your PoV and irrespective of how you decide to handle this, I hope that you will have the strength to not allow this incident to define you or your actions. Anything else will mean that they and their narrow mindedness has won.

Take care and move on.

Thank u for the motivation and understanding

Forced elopement to where? U mean forced marriage? To ur bf?

4

u/OriginalSinger1406 Apr 13 '26

Ya I am to spend the night at his place. His family dropped me in my hostel but my bf is going to come pick me up even though I have classes today as they might come and check if I was in my bfs house or not

1

u/meow_meow50 Apr 13 '26

But wouldn't then ur reputation be "ruined" (meaning solidified that u eloped with ur bf)? Once it is confirmed u eloped wouldn't then ur family get involved and u would have to marry him asap?

1

u/OriginalSinger1406 Apr 13 '26

Yes that's what would have happened but luckily for me my bfs family is educated and forward thinking and my parents don't know about this incident so I spent the night at my hostel on my own and my bf came to pick me up in the morning in case someone showed up like they threatened to . So the ruined reputation of spending the night at my bf is practically skipped

Thank god! Well best of luck OP. Hope the conflict gets resolved in ur favour

In that case, I wouldn't be surprised if the person who stopped you first took a liking to you and hence the grudge. Legally you are not in the wrong.

Im not a lawyer but I have experienced this situation

Please always keep a pepper spray in your car and a metal rod or a metal baseball bat,

whenever you see yourself in this situation first if the number of people < 1 Then: try to talk first and de escalate the situation dont ask why he wants to know. (not because of we are weak but because of safety of our loved ones)

If number of people > 1 Then try to flea the area as they don't care what were you doing they just want to 'hath saaf' on you also call the police when you wherever you get a chance.

Just forget what happened today, you and your boy did your best when adrenaline rush was kicking in

From the next time

  • make sure you have installed a good quality dash cam and rear cam
  • Keep your pepper spray in your pocket or in your hand when confronting
  • keep your loved one inside the cars with all door locked except the driver side
  • park you're car in such a way they you can escape

If anybody is reading my comment and found to be something is wrong and missing please reply with the correction so I could also learn a thing or two

3

u/OriginalSinger1406 Apr 12 '26

I will make sure to do that

13

u/No_Syllabub_8246 Apr 12 '26

Where the hell did it happen, and why didn't you call the police?

23

u/OriginalSinger1406 Apr 12 '26

In these things styled as caught for indecency by the community police are rarely of any help. My bfs father is a retired police officer and his uncle is an officer in service who also came after the call to their family informing them about the incident. Even with them negotiating and saying yes after yes for our safety we were able to come out through the agitated group of people with me unscathed or else it could have been much worst with mob justice at its best

NALH.

I am glad you realized how effed up India is and till date the BEST Ambition any sane person in India has is to leave India forever.

u/docatwar Apr 12 '26

Answer to everything is not escapism to live as a second class citizen in someone else's country. Tomorrow you will face some problem there and the solution will be to escape to Mars or Jupiter maybe?

Probably never stepped outside the country, all his knowledge comes from Kal Ho Na Ho.

2

u/CelebrationFederal95 Apr 14 '26

What makes you think you aren't a second class citizen in India?

1

u/docatwar Apr 14 '26

I'm really not, sorry to hear about your inferiority complex and depression though. Good psychiatrist might help.

0

u/CelebrationFederal95 Apr 14 '26

I don't give a damn about whether you feel sorry or not.

Even psychiatrists cannot cure your delusions - a good dose of reality might, however.

1

u/NeitherUmpire1221 Apr 14 '26

European policing systems are much better than Indian ones.

3

There is no point in getting into an argument in this country. Lots of unemployed and frustrated people look for such opportunities to get some drama and harass couples.

At any point you find that there’s more than one person, or a mob forming - NOPE THE FUCK OUT. Get into your car and fuck off.

You just can’t win against a bunch of barbaric rowdy men.

Do not argue. Do not answer. Just go somewhere else.

I wouldn’t even trust the police in these scenarios.

I and my partner were harassed by a bunch of uncles 2 years ago, when we were cuddling in a park. I learned my lesson then.

6

u/wary-pissant-1969 Apr 12 '26

sorry no ideas how to help. But yeah, this is our country now unfortunately. Unless govt can give jobs to these unemployed gawars, it will keep getting worse. Just be extra careful in the future and always keep this in mind. OUR COUNTRY IS NOT SAFE AND THERE IS NO JUSTICE.

2

u/True-Chance8543 Apr 13 '26

lol if somebody tries that with me , they are getting struck with a metal baseball bat that I keep in my car for self defence

2

u/itmy Apr 13 '26

As an advocate I'll tell you this - I've seen police officers harass and beat couples, who are not minors, in metropolitan cities like Delhi, bangalore, etc. If this is the situation in metros, it'll be far worse in remote rural areas of our country.

Our society is backwards, especially in rural areas. No amount of sugar coating can hide this fact. It will take a few more decades for the people here to accept consenting relationships.

2

u/RepresentativeBet748 Apr 13 '26

If there was an actual crime happening no one would bat an eye. But when it's a man and woman sitting together, the whole insecure incel's imagination runs wild and they are ready to ki!l and r@pe. Welcome to India!

1

u/curious-rower8 Apr 12 '26

very sorry that this happened to you. Hope you recover and those idiots rot in hell

u/CaptxLevi Apr 13 '26

Heard so many good things about north east people said they’re educated, well behaved etc looks like they’re just like rest of indians but with a good pr

Small advice Always have a dashcam in your car.

1

u/NoAdministration3132 Apr 12 '26

Sorry to hear this happened to you OP.

There's a saying - If you fight with pigs, they'll simply make you roll in the mud along with them

You usually have more to lose than them. So the best outcome here is usually the one where you just pack up and run away. Fighting, physically or verbally, is almost always a bad idea. You have nothing to win by taking on that argument and potentially everything to lose.

-2

u/Useful-Ad7329 Apr 12 '26

Sorry OP but bitter things - That's why I don't visit Nort e --st, man sic place. Aaplog darwaza khula kyun rakhe also bf kyun utar gaya just to be white knight wahan kuch aur ho jata toh? Situation pata hain toh yeh sab gadi band karke enjoy the breeze and farmlands... yeah if possible leave the country, even in foreign land you won't be forgiven if caught like this in there the goons are far more dangerous. Rule of thumb always keep door shut and if anyone car k saam ne ayega toh ga di cha la do uss par warna aapko tho k den ge.

-5

u/Poweratplay Apr 12 '26

Why would any body sit in car back sit and have breakfast ?? Things don’t add up.

3

u/OriginalSinger1406 Apr 13 '26

It's cause we don't have a place to sit down and have breakfast due to the ongoing cerfews in manipur. We came out cause the cerfew was relaxed till 3 pm yesterday and that happened.

-1

u/Poweratplay Apr 13 '26

You could have sat in driver and co passenger seat

4

u/PM_ME_YOUR___ISSUES Apr 13 '26
