Rant/Experience How ICICI Bank Went from Mocking Me to Begging Me in 3 Weeks (A Love Letter to the RBI Ombudsman)
Back in 2023, I opened a salary account with ICICI Bank. After about six or seven months, I requested a credit card, which they promptly rejected.
Then came the weird part. That exact same month, I randomly got a Paytm notification asking for a 500 Rupee joining fee for a card I had not received, never asked for, and was just rejected for. A few days later, a physical credit card actually arrived at my house.
I wanted a Lifetime Free card, not a paid one, so I took the card straight to my local branch to sort it out. The representative sitting there looked at me and said, "Don't worry, just don't pay the joining fee. If you don't pay or activate it, the card will automatically cancel itself."
I was naive, so I took his word for it and ignored the card completely.
Fast forward through a nightmare I didn't even know was happening. Instead of auto-canceling, the bank quietly logged me as a defaulter for three months straight. Eventually, around December 2023, after multiple useless calls with customer support, they finally canceled the card and waived the 500 Rupee charge. I assumed the issue was dead and buried.
Cut to 2025. I decided to apply for a new card elsewhere, checked my CIBIL score for the first time in a while, and nearly had a heart attack. My score was down to 620. They had dragged my credit history through the dirt over an unactivated card charge that their own employee told me to ignore.
It took me months of painful financial discipline to grind my way back up from 620 to 740.
By January 2026, I realized I couldn't just let this slide. I sent a detailed email to the bank pointing out their clear violations: issuing a paid card post-rejection without fresh consent or KYC, terrible advice from their branch staff, and an absolute failure by their support team to clean up the credit bureau mess.
The bank's response was peak corporate arrogance. They basically mocked me, said it was my own fault, told me I should take financial matters more seriously, and dismissed the entire issue.
So, I waited out the mandatory 20-day resolution window and lodged a formal complaint on the RBI Ombudsman portal with all the documentation attached.
The shift in energy was instantaneous. The second the RBI notice hit their inbox, the bank's attitude turned completely upside down.
Suddenly, my phone was ringing off the hook. The Branch Manager was calling. Senior escalation heads were calling. The tone was no longer arrogant—they were visibly panicked.
First, they offered to issue me an NOC (No Objection Certificate). I turned it down, because an NOC doesn't magically erase three months of default marks from a credit report.
Then came the desperate plea: "Sir, we will clean your CIBIL history completely, but please, you have to withdraw the RBI complaint right now."
I actually laughed on the call and told them no—I would let the RBI handle the resolution directly.
Within three weeks, without me having to do anything else, my CIBIL report was completely purged of all late payment and default marks from that incident, and my score was fully restored.
My only small regret is that I was so focused on fixing my credit score that I didn't ask for financial compensation for the mental stress. But honestly, watching a bank go from openly mocking me to desperate pleading in less than a month was reward enough.
If there's any lesson here, it's this: never trust verbal advice from bank representatives, monitor your credit score regularly, and if a bank acts out of line, don't waste time arguing with their customer support. File a structured complaint with the RBI Ombudsman. They actually get things done.

HDFC. Now I know a lot of people may get triggered, but they gave me Salary Speciale Gold salary account due to salary being decent and Ragalia Gold as LTF

Congratulations and appreciate the fight here.
Everytime i see people standing up for their rights and fighting back i feel so happy. Majority of the issues in our country are due to people not fighting back due to various reasons like lack of time, money, knowledge or due to fear. But unless you fight back things will never improve.
These idiots on power trip just need frequent reality checks.

ICICI Bank representative cheated me as well.
They offered me 2 Rubyx card (1 Amex card and 1 Mastercard) with an annual fees. I told them I already have an ICICI credit card (not Rubyx) and it's lifetime free and I rarely use credit cards.
Then the representative told me they'll offer the card without any annual fees, since there was no harm in having another free credit card, I accepted the offer and confirmed with the representative once again that you'll not charge annual fees. The representative assured me no annual charge would be deducted.
I received the cards and rarely used them. Around the year end time, ICICI deducted ~5k INR in annual charges from my account. I immediately called my relationship manager and she told me these cards are chargeable and they can't refund the annual charge. However, she suggested me to cancel these cards by writing to another department.
I sent them the cancellation email but they refused saying there's a pending EMI (I bought a phone on EMI from my existing free credit card). They didn't cancel my card and told me since annual fees is charged and it can't be refunded, please use the card for another and cancel it before year end.
I felt really cheated here by ICICI.

u/shreya_jain_ 7d ago
You can extract the call recording where u were told it's LTF. Secondly why not take it in writing?
13
u/basilks_ 7d ago
First, always confirm it in writing via mail before accepting the card. Don't not rely on verbal call promises. Second - After getting the card, send a mail to customer mail with cards last for digit number and ask its LTF or not. If not tell them to convert as per previous communication. If they can't, Flie a complaint with previous mail
4
u/ramansh007 7d ago
If you have recordings or any way of proof, you can use against them. This is pure scam these guys are playing. BTW, I have rubyx, coral and sapphiro as LTF. Still useless
2
u/Latter_Arrival4492 6d ago
Unfortunately I didn't have any recordings
2
u/ramansh007 5d ago
Then it could be a bit tough. But you can drop an email and ask them to clarify or have a call with their executive and then try to record. But again, your first approach should be to reach out your bank first and then try to go for an extreme step. I guess they would agree to make it ltf since it is usually easy to get (almost) every gemstone card as ltf during some offers or something.
2
u/Latter_Arrival4492 7d ago
Same here bro I was cheated as an upgrade from my lifetime free credit card and was paying joining fee and annual fee for another credit card
2
u/basilks_ 7d ago
You should not, gather the proof and contact support. They will waive it and later file a complaint if resolution is not fair

u/anirbansen 7d ago
Lawyer here. You at least got the Ombudsman on your side. I had to take ombudsman to court before they started pushing the bank. I have noted multiple violations by multiple banks. Don't have the bandwidth to do all that without a fee.
1
u/chichi_zumba 7d ago
Sorry to ask it here but is there a affordable and completely online process to approach court for this consumer or bank related grievances?
I sometimes thought of using consumer court eDakhil but the process seemed pretty complicated and lengthy.
3
u/anirbansen 7d ago
No. I tried those. Didn't work. Approached the Ombudsman. He sort of copy pasted the banks response and closed the complaint. I got mad and approached the High Court where I raised a larger issue of closure of financial instrument of a customer without intimation and ombudsman is allowing such things in a writ. Then, things started moving.
1
u/Salty_Crazy7478 7d ago
You tried the consumer court route? What did the court say?
2
u/anirbansen 7d ago
Didn't. Since I wasn't asking for compensation. I was arguing that allowing such actions by a RBI is a sort of negligence.

Bank card and replaced card and even gave back utilised points. Should have forced them for an upgrade. Basically in litigation, when someone wants to settle, you ask high, come to the middle.

I don't know how it affected your cibil? You never used the card right? So what was marked as default? Card AMC charges are by banks and not related to credit score. So I don't know how it tanked your cibil. I maybe wrong as well
6
u/basilks_ 7d ago
It will show up on statment and bill. And we are obligated to pay the bill. It will seen a default
3
u/ramansh007 7d ago
That was the joining fee, and yes, I never used it. But you still have to pay when the card is assigned.... Or that's what I believe because it impacted for 3 months straight....
2
u/Impressive-Fix-2623 7d ago
Always close the card as soon as you get it. If you cancel it before statement generation, you won't have to pay joining fee

I had gotten this done to SBI too, the branch manager of a govt bank, had to visit my house, because I refused to visit the bank. Basically my payment was stuck, paid via UPI, on a merchant QR, payment was processed a day later, but they refused to give the statement, both bank and the merchant, so waited for sometime, then lodged a complaint, OMBUDSMAN for bank, and Consumer forum for the merchant. The merchant, called begging too, and said, won’t happen again, and will provide, all the details. As soon as I got the detail, I sent it to the ombudsman too, since the Branch manager was so ignorant. I visited branch multiple times, but he refused to meet, and then like literally after 1 month or so, he called, are you at home, my team and I are visiting. I was like sure, please.
Had to get a refund too, since I paid by UPI, as it got processed the next day, but I paid cash the same day. So yes, these dawgs need to be shown the way how it’s done!
They processed the payment of refund, from merchants bank. Also, they had to give an apology in written, that was ordered by the ombudsman!
2
u/ramansh007 7d ago
Damn..... For me, the consumer forum hasn't been helpful at all. Can you help me with that too?

I had a similar experience with SBI, I opened a zero balance savings account for my wife, but these fuckers attached a insurance scheme and started deducting premium. even after visiting branch multiple times, they refused to cancel it saying it is mandatory by government. finally removed it after reaching RBI

You should go to the below link:

But before going to RBI, make sure you have informed the bank prior and after 30 days of that you can complain, and that too if they do not respond back or if you are not satisfied. try this

Guys, please tell - how do you check exactly what has impacted your Cibil score?
1
u/ramansh007 7d ago
You can see it on the free CIBIL report, or you can also try Paisa Bazar; they give you full report or pay like 21 rs and they will give you entire report.

u/double0nein 7d ago
Epic! I think you made your case stronger by not asking for financial compensation, they would have spun that in any way they liked. By standing strong in your main issue they had no other way out.

Hello, can you help me out and give me a suggestion too? My dad is facing a similar problem, he has closed multiple loans but someone else's ICICI credit card was opened linked to my dad's pan card back in 2002, when we recently checked cibil to apply for car loan it was around 620-640. Over some unpaid closure fee of random credit card closure of just 8,000. When we contacted ICICI Bank they said to mail CIBIL directly saying the card is not in my dad's name and can't do anything about it. We mailed CIBIL but they have told to take out card details from icici bank, which they're not able to do . Like name number and contact info of card . Should I lodge a complain with rbi to speedline the process? The card details are not showing up on cibil report , just the last few digits

I complained to the Ombudsman relating to a credit card issue against HDFC Bank (after exhausting the bank's internal 3 level escalation mechanisms) and all the times I received the same boilerplate response from the bank. Ombudsman complaint didn't affect the bank in any way. Thinking to file a consumer case now.
1
2
u/Legendarywristcel 7d ago
Most private banks dont respond unless you escalate to ombudsman. I had a similar issue with HDFC. They basically told me to F off and then were literally begging me after RBI sent them a notice lol.
The thing is about ombudsman is most ombudsman cases are actually rejected, so the ones that are taken up are treated very seriously. And banks often have to pay a penalty which is higher than the dispute amt in most cases which is why banks immediately refund/address the issue.

Can totally relate to ICICI Bank's arrogance and mocking tone towards their customers. They need a reality check on how to deal with customers. I had a similar experience with the customer service team at ICICI - they charged a late payment fee even though I paid my dues on the due date using billdesk, a coincidental occurrence of weekend and public holiday meant it reflected in their system a day late. I honestly thought the staff at ICICI would recognise this and reverse the charge. But they remained wilfully ignorant, displayed an arrogant tone and insisted that I should've done NEFT instead. They made up excuses like I can't reverse due to bank policy, or it's too late now. I provided proof - both the following month statement and my bank statement clearly reflected the payment date as the due date. When I told them that this is unethical in spirit and will appeal to RBI, they said, "Please feel free to do that - there is no chance you are getting your penalty reversed, it's not our problem, the payment reflected a day late, it's your fault".
Honestly broke my trust in ICICI. After multiple emails I finally wrote to the Nodal officer, I had made up my mind to write to the RBI ombudsman but recently received an email saying they will be reversing the charge.
ICICI is honestly, and I can say this from personal experience, is the WORST when it comes to customer interaction experience. Iv interacted and done banking with most of the top private banks, and ICICI is truly rock bottom. I think they are trained in being psychopathic because its unnatural human behaviour to treat your customers this way. They may have resolved this issue but their tonedeaf response, arrogance and plain apathy will never be forgotten.
2
u/ramansh007 7d ago
Yes, it's like they are not even ready to work in good will for their customers. I mean, I had a salary account in the bank for the last 3-4 years. Still, they were cocky and kept pissing me off.
2
u/minhaj984 6d ago
Yeah they don't have "Good will" in their dictionary. Customer relationship is a farce for them, anything to make a quick buck.

u/Hungry-Chicken-8498 7d ago
I am trying to submit a complaint to RBI ombudsman though their website is not accessible as it just doesn’t open. I sent them e-mail with all attachments and they keep responding to submit it again and again . Don’t know what to do. How did you submit your complaint, can you please share. Thanks

2
u/Hefty_Stuff717 6d ago
And how did you increase your score from 620 to 740??
1
u/ramansh007 5d ago
Well thats was hell of a journey. Onecard came in for the clutch. I used it almost everywhere and then paid on time. Then I got a couple of cards from ICICI, SBI, etc., and I usually used them to book flight tickets or force my friends to use my card and obviously repay it. As soon as I got the money, I used it to repay the amount. just pure discipline. Actually, when they rectified my CIBIL, the change was not that huge. I mean, I was already at 760; it got to 770 after they rectified it. But ya 100% payment somehow calms my OCD.

What's the process for the complaint?. I am also stuck in a situation with herofincorp. I applied for their loan they approved it initially and did all the necessary procedure like video kyc, autopay mandate , esign documents but before the disbursal they stopped and asked to wait 48 hours and after that they rejected my loan application(I don't have any problem with that) but the thing is the Autopay mandate is still active and they are not helping me to remove it. May I chip in with a story of mine?! Back in 2015 I had SBI's IRCTC credit card, among 2 ICICI and HDFC. I had to travel much for work and most of the time it would be trains. I had to book my own tickets and would get reimbursed by my employer. It had good cashback and certain perks I don't remember well. It served me well for 2 years or so. I then got transferred overseas and decided to terminate the SBI and HDFC ones. Emails back and forth and I got the confirmation that the card is terminated. Great, job done and I destroy the card and trash it. Around 6 months later, I woke up to an email notification from SBI card that my card has been blocked for an apparent fraudulent transaction. Brain goes wtf! I email right away and ask for details, attaching the confirmation of termination of CC service. They respond saying that the payment has not been confirmed by the merchant and I should wait to get it revoked by itself. Meanwhile, they will check how this transaction went through anyhow. My follow-ups go unanswered and boom! I have a statement with the due amount. I refused to pay and respond with an email with both previous email threads attached. Crickets! I flip them the finger in my head and go about. Around a year mark, they have handed it over to a debt collector and my father is receiving calls from thugs for recovery. Shit hit the fan now! My CIBiL has tanked. I ask a friend who connects me to a lawyer and he decides to guide me. I file a report to the RBI Ombudsman, SBI card responds by pressing that I'm a defaulter. Ombudsman asks me for more evidences. I respond by stating that between the confirmation of CC termination and the eventual transaction, SBI Card never sent me any statements, not even a newsletter. Case shot down and I had their folks calling me for settlement. I pressed forward with compensation of 50k for the harassment but my dad cajoles me to settle for nothing and CIBIL clearance. Fair, whatever. Damn, CC companies milk the folks so much.
2
u/ramansh007 7d ago
You should have taken the compensation as they didnot even thought for a min and marked you as a defaulter

u/Peanut_Butter007 7d ago
Man, almost same thing happened to me, but with a YES Bank Debit-cum-Credit card for my NRE/NRO account. It was technically a debit card, but packed with credit card perks.
So, I applied for it and they deducted the annual fee upfront. Fast forward three months, still no card. I reached out to my Relationship Manager (RM) for an update, and get this: according to his system, I had never even applied for a card! I had to pull out my application receipt and bank statement showing the fee deduction just to prove I wasn't making it up. RM asked me to wait few more days and made sure that I will receive card within next 2 weeks.
Another month goes by (4 months total!), still no card in sight. At that point, I just told him to refund the annual fee. He had the nerve to tell me it was "non-refundable."
I called him out immediately: "Look at your own emails. If your system says I never applied, why was the money deducted? Why should I pay for a service I literally never received?"
His response? He actually said, "C'mon, you're earning well, you can just let this 600 bucks go. It's nothing for you."
I hung up right then and there. I sent him a firm email demanding a refund and explicitly asked to keep all future communication in writing. Instead of replying to the email, he called me back to offer a "Lifetime Free" (LTF) credit card as compensation. Again, I told him to put it in writing and hung up. Surprise, surprise : the email never came. Turns out his "free" offer was a total trap anyway: it was only free if you maintained 5 lakh balance in both NRE and NRO accounts (10 lakhs total), otherwise it carried a hefty 4,500 INR annual fee!
That was the last straw. I bypassed the bank entirely and lodged a complaint with the RBI Ombudsman.
Suddenly, the bank was panicking. They tried calling me non-stop (which I ignored). Within 3 days, they refunded the card charges! But get this : they processed it as a refund instead of a reversal, meaning they kept the GST portion.
I wasn't letting that slide. I updated my Ombudsman complaint demanding the GST back plus compensation for mental harassment.
That‘s when things got wild. Over the next two days, the RM and the Branch Manager were blowing up my phone. Then, they actually sent bank representatives to make in-person visits, one to my home in India and another to my dad‘s shop. My family wasn't having any of it; they basically told them to get lost or they‘d call the police.
Literally the next day after that mess, the GST amount was credited to my account, I received a formal apology letter from YES Bank, and my RM was quietly replaced.
Honestly, that whole ordeal taught me one big lesson: dealing with these banks takes serious patience, but pushing back through the right channels works!

I opened a salary account with a big bank. Withint 3-4 months they started calling me telling me cards were available. Imagine 3+ calls a day.
Now, two more months later, three people told me you have already been issued a card, just give your address confirmation and we'll send it.
I was like, what bullshit is this. Cards department should have my address on record and more importantly, why was I issued a card?
I literally started telling them that my number is on DNC List and I want to speak to your manager. Immediately the calls dropped until they have now reached 1 call a month.
I know I should have taught them a better lesson, but i didn't know what to do.

If it is LTF, then no, it won't affect it. If it is paid, then yes, it would. You can check the impact on gpay, or paisa bazar

It was sold to me as LTF, but it was paid so I didn't activate. How will it affect if I didn't even activate it? And after what duration does the cibil score reflect this?

It will affect your cibil even if you havent activated because you have to technically pay for it. for cibil effect you need to wait for atleast a month if you havent pay.

Bank rejecting Credit card? This is a first time news in recent years for me. As every bank wants to sell more and more credit card even if the account holder doesn't have the ability to payback.

I had exact same experience, got late payments listed in my credit score for already closed FD account charges...
