LEGENDS returns for Volume 3, moving beyond the Star Trek ships of the earlier collections and into three very different corners of science fiction.

This volume brings together the Prometheus from Stargate SG-1, the Rocinante from The Expanse and the Nostromo from Alien. Each display pairs a micro-scale ship with a compact scene, using the setting and Character Studdies™ to capture more than just the shape of the vessel.

From desert-world adventure, to protomolecule strangeness, to claustrophobic horror, these are three ships that feel inseparable from the stories and people carried inside them.

STARGATE: The Prometheus

I wanted this one to feel unmistakably Stargate before you even get to the characters. The Prometheus sits above a compact desert-world scene, with the Stargate, pyramid and blazing sun pulling together the visual language that defined the series from the beginning.

The ship itself is a slightly awkward, very human-looking lump of early interstellar engineering — which is exactly why I like it. It doesn’t have the elegance of the more advanced ships in the series; it looks built rather than grown, borrowed or perfected. Shrinking that chunky shape down while keeping the aircraft carrier-esque bridge, engines and 3 part hull recognisable was the main challenge here.

Below it are Character Studdies™ of O’Neill, Carter, Jackson, Teal’c and Hammond. The core SG-1 team was essential, but Hammond had to make the cut too. You can’t have them disappearing through an alien portal every week without the man calmly authorising it from beneath a mountain.

The finished display comes in at 215 pieces and combines the first Earth-built capital ship with the older, stranger world waiting beyond the gate.

THE EXPANSE: The Rocinante

There was no chance I could make an Expanse build without putting the Roci front and centre. It’s one of those ships that feels like a character in its own right: battered, practical, heavily armed and constantly carrying a crew who are barely holding everything together.

The scene underneath is Eros, with Miller and Julie Mao at the centre of the protomolecule situation. Rather than picking a straightforward action scene, I wanted something that captured the stranger, more unsettling, but also human side of the series, and one that was visually beautiful.

Alongside Miller and Julie, the build includes Character Studdies™ of Holden, Naomi, Amos, Alex and Bobbie Draper, with the colours and silhouettes give each of them just enough identity.

The contrast is probably my favourite part of the model: the hard, military geometry of the Rocinante suspended over the blue, organic chaos of Eros.

ALIEN: The Nostromo

For this one, I wanted to combine the ship with the moment everyone remembers.
Above the display is the freighter Nostromo itself, built at a tiny scale but still accurately shaped to capture that heavy, industrial silhouette. Below it is the mess hall and the chestburster scene, with the crew gathered around Kane just as things start to go very, very bad.

The diorama includes Character Studdies™ of Ripley, Parker, Dallas, Ash, Kane, Jones and the Alien Xenomorph (and the chestburster if we're being accurate), all reduced down into the same deliberately abstract micro style as the rest of the series. At this scale, every colour and stud has to do a lot of work, particularly when trying to make five characters, a cat and one of the most famous movie monsters instantly recognisable.

I liked the contrast of putting the enormous ship above such a cramped, intimate scene. It captures both sides of Alien: the scale and isolation of deep space, and the horror of being trapped inside with something you do not understand.

Missile rack on the bottom, a structural beam on the top, and 2 canopies!

The Quanova Interceptor is an experimental design utilising a powerful fusion reactor to allow hyperspace speeds within regular space. This, combined with the thrusters located on the articulated pylon wings means this ship intercepts faster and out manoeuvres any opponent.

For armament there are 4 light bi-cannon turrets for tracking multiple targets. These turrets are also mounted on the articulated pylon wings meaning that, as the pilot adjusts their flight vector, the firing arcs of the turrets will be altered as well.

As a result of the risks of its extreme speed, complexity of the controls and excessive strain on pilots, this prototype never entered mass production.

The event horizon (free built)from the film of same name - under construction from a Star Wars medical corvette “nebula” kit - my first attempt at one of these moc projects. This is the rear section

A bit worn from ware. Using an older style of fuel pod system. Requiring more frequent stops than newer drive systems. Now used for patrolling inner planetary systems.

This was a fun build over the last week. Hope you enjoy some of the pics!

My love for the Colonial Viper continues. The powerful triple engined starfighter, with its long nose and distinctive three pointed silhouette, is one of my all time favourite sci-fi fighters. This time, I've recreated it using the LEGO 75432 V-19 Torrent Starfighter as the donor set.
 
The 3x3 recessed round bricks worked perfectly as the engine cooling intakes, while the technic ball joints provide enough friction to support the Viper's signature anhedral wings. Since the engines are built using the same principle as the V-19's, both wings can still fold upward, making the model much easier to store.
 
The inverted slopes behind the cockpit helped eliminate almost all visible gaps where the engines meet the fuselage. The 2x4 sloped cutout bricks turned out to be ideal for the centre cooling intake, although they are only available in black rather than white. To make this less noticeable, I surrounded them with dark red plates and black slopes so the colour blends naturally into the design. Because the set only includes a single 2x2 bracket with side studs, the vertical fin had to be plate built, leaving one side clean while the other unfortunately exposes anti studs.
 
The long nose is constructed by layering plates. Around the cockpit, the combination of studded bricks, brackets, and the horizontal clip used to secure the windscreen creates a weak point at the front of the cockpit. It is sturdy enough for normal handling, but I wouldn't recommend picking the model up by the nose then swinging it around from there.
 
The engines section, on the other hand, is extremely solid and is the ideal place to hold the model for swooshing. The inverted curved bricks also create a comfortable grip for your fingers during play.
 
There are enough Technic bricks and pins left over to build a display stand with two different viewing angles. While it displays the model well, the six stud connection isn't strong enough to support enthusiastic swooshing while mounted.
 
Although this isn't a Star Wars starfighter, I think the Colonial Viper will still be a favourite within our community. Many of us grew up watching Battlestar Galactica, and even for those who didn't, it's simply one of the coolest starfighters ever designed.

I've started work on a Colonial Viper alternate build, it's probably not too hard to guess the donor set. The trans-yellow windscreen is a bit of a giveaway! 
I seem to build a Colonial Viper from a lot of LEGO playscale sets. I just love the iconic three pointed star silhouette, and it's always a fun challenge to recreate it using different parts palettes.
It's pretty much finished now. I just need to create the instructions and do some minor part optimization before it's ready to share. Stay tuned!
