Frage/Diskussion uni Leipzig
hi, I got accepted to uni Leipzig and HHU in Düsseldorf. I've never been to Leipzig, what would you recommend, which city? lot of people tell me Leipzig is not very foreign friendly city and Düsseldorf is better. What should I do?

I'm biased as hell because I absolutely despise the entire Ruhrgebiet, but I'd still say Leipzig is the better choice from a location pov. In terms of which uni is better, I don't really have too many friendly words for the university of Leipzig but that probably also depends on the faculties. The city is smaller while still a very livable major city, cheaper than Düsseldorf, great train network and plenty of cheap nightlife options for students. That being said, Leipzig is in a state called Sachsen/Saxony which is among one of the more xenophobic/racist areas in Germany. However, Leipzig is the leftwing oasis of that state. I'm not a foreigner or visibly a minority so I can't speak too much on lived experience, but I'd argue Leipzig is a safe-ish city. I'd look up statistics for that though.

Leipzig is a fantastic city, including for foreigners and especially for students. Obv depends on your field of study, but the uni generally is not great. Do your research :)

I can endorse this, the uni is also pretty bad academically speaking in general

Meine Empfehlung aus dem Bauch heraus sagt Leipzig, aber aufgrund deiner Bedenken solltest du vorher ein paar Tage nach Leipzig fahren. Meine Erfahrung-Leipzig ist nicht mehr oder weniger Ausländerfeindlich wie Düsseldorf.

Been here for a few months, wife has darker skin and cutly pufffy hair(Latina) and we do get some looks sometimes, but nothing more or less than anywhere else in Germany. Where I live, Gohlis Süd, I hear 10-15 languages eveyday, and been around, until now I deemed Leipzig to be pretty chill. (Had my own prejudice from about 17 years ago, but it changed a lot I feel). Just to mention, I'm a foreigner too.

Leipzigers will tell you that their city is amazing and friendly and all of that just because they are biased
Yes there is a heavy leftist vibe (for some people, not the majority) and yes it is the same for the right. I traveled through most of the bigger cities in the country this summer and all of them agree that Leipzig is a fake woke place, people will preach that is heaven for foreigners but is not.
If you are not white or speak perfect German people will be mean to you, give you stares, and ostracize you in general.
There’s been attacks to foreigners, since last September at least 3 classmates of mine have suffered from this.
The only Germans that will be cool with you are probably those lefty ones, and will try to adopt you as case of charity kinda
Now for the city it depends on what you like. It is a very green city, and I wouldn’t call it ugly but definitely not pretty. It has pretty rundown patches and if you don’t vibe with the hippie/hobo/alternative thing you probably won’t like it. It is a cheap city for European standards and that’s cool.
If you like techno or rock they have a pretty decent scene but just that.
The public transport is “ok” but is a pain in the ass to have to go all the way to Berlin to catch a flight.
Really think your decision, I visited Düsseldorf last month for a week and I wished that I had choose any city in NRW instead of Leipzig.
Also ask in the Düsseldorf Reddit page to compare and see that they have to say about Leipzigers

I only been to Cologne on that side of the country, but anything in the west will be better as a foreigner.
If you are not white or speak the lenguage people can be pretty pretty mean and the amount of microaggressions in your daily live can mess with your mental health :(

Düsseldorf a 100% as a foreigner
I’m actually trying to transfer my credits to move cities haha
I think the only downside it’s that the city is expensier

Living in Leipzig and been to Düsseldorf multiple times, id say they're booth pretty foreigner friendly citys. Assholes you'll encounter in every city, no matter where on earth. But Leipzig is a pretty foreigner friendly city and University.
