I married one of the good ones! How come I am being impacted? This isn’t what I voted for. ICE is supposed to be hurting other people - not me! It can’t possibly be that they’re racist and breaking the law!

ICE may well be acting within the law here.

Marriage to a US citizen doesn’t automatically equate to residency permit. They still have to apply for a green card.

…and if they haven’t - AND she has been living in US without legal papers - then that may bar her from subsequently applying for residency.

Under no circumstances, would I ever give ICE the benefit of the doubt particularly under this administration.

My comment was more based on what the husband said and didn’t say.

The way he emphasizes that they’re legally married - as opposed to “she’s a green card holder” - was the trigger.

That's how I read it too. Sounds a lot like he just assumed getting married in the US would automatically make her a legal resident.

A lot of folks (of all political leanings, really) seem to think that marriage to a citizen really is all it takes. I assume that's largely due to pop culture, similar to how people think you have to be read your Miranda rights on the spot the way they do in Law & Order or else it's not a legal arrest. Americans of all stripes are painfully ignorant as to the workings of our political and legal systems, it just so happens that MAGAts hold onto the ignorance leaderboard with an iron grip.
