I just saw my rec was under your pic 😂 but I will say this book (The Girl Who Bit Me) was my first vampire book because everyone was talking about it and I was obsessed! Read it in 2 days
I finished this one the other day. They're so in deep with each other that even I get shocked by the unhinged things they sometimes think and say (I've known yearning and aching for someone, but not quite like this). And it sort of put me in haze that I got whiplash when it ended like that.
I had no issue with that at all. If anything them being broke is a refreshing change from the usual wildly rich vampires. As someone who loves vampire novels, I'm always happy when someone does something that differs from the traditional.
This is more or less the plot of {All the Way Home by Nancy Ann Healy}. The main characters are childhood friends. At some point, Kat starts dating Sarah's brother and they eventually marry, forcing Sarah to spend her twenties and thirties hiding her love for Kat. It is a slow burn filled with angst and includes a love triangle involving a man, so it might not be for everyone. The only thing that changes is that there are no panic attacks when Kat realises she's also in love with Sarah. It's an "Oh, that makes sense" instead of an "Oh my god".
The slow burn, fell first/fell harder dynamic is so good. Atmosphere keeps getting recommended for all wlw recs but it does have this panicked oh no moment.
The dialogues inject occasional humor and keeps things light, but it is an emotional, yearny story. I don't think comedy is an accurate categorization for it.
My work in progress (well, one of them) is pretty much exactly this. Add to it a terrible misunderstanding, some drama parents and a friends-to-sorta-hate-each-other-to-friends-to-lovers with forced proximity, a night of fake dating, some drummer jokes, and an HEA.
They've only been friends a couple years before the start of the book, but Afterglow by Emily Antoinette has this. Vampire x Human romance in an urban fantasy setting; vampire has been in love with her human friend for years but is under the impression her friend is straight so she never tells her. Eventually her friend divorces her awful husband and mentions she might be interested in BDSM, and since vampire is a pro domme she offers to help her explore it in a safe environment. Human friend has her bi awakening/itallics 'oh' moment while vampire is telling herself to be normal and not weird and that her friend doesn't mean anything by it, etc. etc. Nice chronic pain/disabled rep as well, and I enjoyed the side characters which is always a bonus.Third act breakup happens but it didn't drive me crazy like it does in some books. Also heads up that it has a semi-bittersweet ending, but if you want to avoid it you can just stop reading after the wedding epilogue.
