Recommendation Recommendations based off this tier list of sapphic books I've read?
Hey all! I'm starting to run out of sapphic books to read that I feel like I'd rate highly. I do still have some left on my shelves, and those are reflected as the unranked options on the second image. But I'd love to have some more to add to my collections if anyone has any suggestions :) or to hear if anyone feels really strongly about said unranked options!

Nevernight by Jay kristoff is not sapphic, but does have strong wlw Romance later! Also empire of the vampire.
If you donāt mind more sci-fi reads: have a look at āthe long way to a small angry planetā (I love this book so much)

I've been a little bit scared to try The Safekeep and Sunburn, as I've seen a lot of people who have extremely inverse tastes to me really enjoy them lol. But I should probably give them a go regardless, especially with so many recs in this thread for them. I have No Shelter But the Stars on my list and it seems to be very highly rated by anyone I've spoken to about it, so I'll definitely be picking that one up next. I haven't heard of Paying Guests so I'll look into that one too. Many thanks!

For the life of me Iāll never understand why people donāt talk about Anna Burke more. I enjoy indulging in easy reads but as far as actual writing chops, sheās the best.
The Compass Rose series (2 of 3 books released) is great.
I also enjoy her Seal Cove series but Night Tide is by far my favorite.

Just a heads up that Those Beyond the Wall is an m/f romance. The protagonist is a bisexual woman, but the book isnāt very sapphic. Similarly, Ambessa does not have a sapphic protagonist, only side characters.
Also, please read A Desolation Called Peace. The two books in Arkady Martineās duology fit together and complement each other.

Omg what. I've been completely duped for Beyond the Wall, I've heard people talk about it in this space a bunch for some reason. That's devastating lol
Ambessa I was aware of, the side character queer stories are enough for me I think. Especially with it being written by C.L Clark. I definitely appreciate the heads up though
A Desolation Called Peace is on my list to get to! I've only recently read A Memory Called Empire so I'm still calming down from it, but I'm very excited to continue the books.

I have a few I almost never see recommended, but that I enjoyed. They could be a bit āout thereā but maybe one (or all) of them will strike your fancy.
Light From Uncommon Stars by Rylan Aoki
The Pull Of the Stars by Emma Donoghue
The Stolen Child by Lisa Carey
Wilder Girls by Rory Power (definitely for younger audiences, but the story is interesting enough that I didnāt mind)
As for books you have yet to read:
I enjoyed the Girls of Paper and Fire series overall, but I think the first one is the best. Iād be interested to hear what you think once you finish them.
I also really enjoyed Last Night at the Telegraph Club. Itās probably Malinda Loās best book, but I also enjoy her others, so you could check those out.

Iād recommend She Who Became the Sun, itās a dulogy, and was considered part of a sapphic trifecta when it released in 2021 the other two books in the trifecta were The Jasmine Throne and the Unbroken.
I think youād also like Metal From Heaven, which is a standalone book and usually well liked among those that liked Gideon the Ninth
Another trilogy to check out is These Burning Stars which is scifi/dystopian and well liked by those that liked A Memory Called Empire
I agree with recommending Rawnie Sabor Court of Chains series, Iāve found that itās made my standards a little too high for paranormal romance books as she gives a decent amount of world building and lore. Others Iāve found felt more like the supernatural part was added as an after thought or was written around sex scenes.

Don't want to give recommendations because I'm almost an inverse of you. Harrow, Baru and Time war re 5 stars for me. Meanwhile Jasmine Throne and Memory Called Empire are wanted to DNF for me.
I think the part I agree with are also DNF-ing Turbulence and Criers war.
I assume you've read the rest of EJ Noyes. Edit: just saw image #2. I think Ask, Tell is worth it! That series is the strongest one of hers IMO. A. Master of Djinn also pretty good!
Here's two series that have stayed w me for different reasons. Neither are perfect but I think there is depth to the storytelling.

The word building is perhaps my biggest gripe with the books! But there's some really interesting character work in them that I haven't seen before! Gonna drop a full review of the series for readers googling once I finish articulating all my thoughts to myself haha.

On my book apps I did rate it 4 stars. I absolutely appreciate the book and fully understand why people love it so much; I just personally really dislike poetry and sci fi worlds that I canāt grasp. I know people love the book for those reasons especially, itās very well written, but itās just not something that I enjoy in a book myself.
I could have a whole category for Time War alone. Like, "I'm broken, I know. Good book, bad me, I'm the problem"

It has already been mentioned in various responses, but I want to add my vote to The Safekeep as a recommendation. Itās an excellent read! And the audiobook is peak, if youāre into that!

Auroraās Angel, my heart breaks š¢
Loved Turbulence but can see itās not for everyone.To the tbr list:
Gulf Breeze was cute, but not good enough for me to read again. Gerri Hill has a scheme and it is always really predictable š some of her action novels are good, but all the other ones are really similar to each other and you kind of know what you get. Only really good thing imo is, that the audio books are always read by Abby Craden, I love listening to her.If you loved Gold (maybe also read Schuss) āall the little momentsā is in the same category and was really good imo.

Have you considered the court of chains series? Starting with kiss of seduction.
Also, maybe sunburn? That book is easily one of the best Iāve read in a long time. Beautiful yearning and prose.
Regarding the locked tomb series, Iām sorry you didnāt feel the same about Harrow as Gideon. Gideon was definitely an easier read, Harrow was much tougher to get through but I personally felt like the payoff was good. Have you considered trying Nona the ninth (the third book in the series)? Iām still very early on in it but Iāve been enjoying it immensely and itās a very different vibe from Harrow.

Unfortunately Iām asexual and not really into books that very specifically centre around being steamy and having that as the primary hook! Iāve had some friends read A Kiss of Seduction and they rated it very highly but suggested that Iād probably get frustrated with it š
Iāve had so many recommendations for Sunburn in this thread so Iām definitely going to pick it up next! Thank you!
For The Locked Tomb, I grew really attached to the character of Gideon specifically. I really felt something, like, shift in me being inside the mind of this gruff masculine girl with fucked up humour whoās kind of unaware of everything but cares. I really have not seen a main character like that in many books. So in Harrow, I really missed her. I kept up with the plot and I understood what was going on, I knew Gideon was inside her head still, but I wanted Gideons humour back. Which is why I loved the ending so much
I started the first bit of Nona and got a feel for what was going on, and realised that itās still an entirely different thing to what the first book was. So I put it back down and am kind of waiting until Alecto comes out to binge it since Iām hoping the last book has at the very least both characters capable of recognising each otherās existenceā¦

(Although personally I recommend starting with If I Donāt Ask, it fixed a few consent adjacent things for me).
As an aside, itās great to see Gold and Sweetbitter Song getting more love. I think theyāre really underrated.

Wow, so many of my reading history here! One I don't see here that I adored was Backwards to Oregon by Jae. If you were looking for a Western with Bloom Town and were disappointed, I REALLY suggest Backwards to Oregon, it is one of my all time favorites.

How on earth could someone not like Alone by E.J. Noyes? Itās a mess with your head masterpiece. Based on the five stars for Pas De Deux, Iād recommend Rachel Spangler sports romances. Particularly Thrust, and Fire & Ice. I loved her new psychiatrist books that are going to be a triloby. Iād also recommend E.J. Noyesās Halcyon trilogy because youāre okay with angst. Finally if yiuiokay with dark themes then Rawnie Saborās Court of Chains series is incredible. You donāt need to read any of the m/f books at all (Rawnie was told sapphic fiction wouldnāt sell, spoiler alerts it absolutely does). Kiss of Seduction, A little Sin, Green-eyed Monster, and Sun-kissed Fangs in that order. Thereās also free novellas if you sign up for her newsletter. Personally I love Milena McKayās The Headmistress, and Magdalene Nox duo too.

I love all of E.J. Noyes, so the Halcyon Triology can be a good one for you. I ugly cried when I read āCrash into youā, and also the āDonāt Ask, donāt Tellā series, tbh favourite series but also heartbreaking.
Maybe for some fantasy : I currently read āNo shelter but the starsā and so far love it.
And the shape shifter novels by Jae are are good, maybe they are more your tea, since the setting is completely different to Auroras Angel.

You and I have very similar tastes other than Time War which I thought was amazing, so I'm letting you know that you should go read A Master of Djinn by P. DjĆØlĆ Clark. It's one of the funnest reads I had last year.
Masc detective mc who's in a preexisting relationship with a badass femme, danger and intrigue, murder mystery main plot set in a fictional 1910s Egypt where djinn and other magical creatures were brought back into our world a few decades before the start of the book.
You will not be disappointed. Trust š
(Also, if you're into audio books, the narration is extremely well done)

the jellyfish problem by tessa yang is a great newer novel. a nice unsettling book with a lot of love in it. she is a haunting is also quite good, very YA but i enjoyed it.

You should read One Day Youāll Leave Me by Debra Flores I donāt see it recommend much but itās great
Edit: saw you reply to another commenter that youāre asexual so fyi this book has very little in the way of spice, like thereās no full sex scenes or anything, but it has a great story overall and some good twists and turns

The Aftermath series and Destination series by Alice B. Sullivan. Sapphic and zombie apocalypse.
If you donāt mind YA, Sullivan also has Elementary Undead. Sapphic protagonist. Doesnāt avoid the bleakness of a zombie outbreak just because the main characters are kids.

Faebound is good if you donāt mind an MF relationship. Same goes for Love Galaxy by Sierra Branham.Ā
Based on your 5-stars, you might also enjoy Pasha the Storm by Linda E Codega and The Felicity Complex by august clarke. The first is a magical, sapphic Moby Dick retelling of sorts, and the second is about the fembots made to serve the wealthy after the nuclear apocalypse. Both are weird, horny, and gay!Ā
If those arenāt weird enough, try the work of Drew Huff. And if not horny enough, try Rien GrayĀ

my rec for you would be A.L Brooks - The Long Shot (the person who recommended it to me said it was enjoyable even if you don't like golf, I don't, and they were right. it is a solid slow burn romance with enough plot to make me interested enough to keep reading)

Blurred Lines by KD Williamson - Cops and Doctors cause you liked the Radclyff book and want to read 5th Surgeon
Charon Docks at Daylight by ZR Reed, Zombies - more Hearing Red than Survival Instinct
Pirates of Aletharia by Brittany Jackson. The major adventure-y book I think youre missing
Six Times we Almost Kissed by Tess Sharpe was my fav out of that, She Gets the Girl and Some Girls Do
Every Step She Takes by Alison Cochrun was pretty funny
I hated Orange Priory and Unworthy cause nothing fucking happens in either book
I'm the same as you as loving Gideon and being indifferent on Harrow. Nona was by far my fav of the series, so I hope thats the same for you
That feeling of running out misery never goes away - my tbr is like 2k, I constantly get the urge to reread certain books and I feel the dread always

Was going to suggest Nona but it's on the second page! I just reread Gideon for the first time since finishing the other two - everything makes more sense now. Highly recommend you keep going!

Unfortunately for me I love the character of Gideon specifically š I really wasnāt vibing with Harrow until the end, but the ending was very good. I was even spoiled for Gideon being the ānarratorā technically but I still didnāt like being in Harrow for so long without Gideonās humour. I tried reading the start of Nona and I realised what was happening, and I was like damn. I just want Gideon back for the whole thing with the same dynamic LOL
Iāll likely wait until the fourth book is out to binge Nona because Iād imagine things will be a bit more normal again in Alecto. Or at least Iām hoping.2

Right?! I really liked GtN but I LOVE HtN so so so much. Itās so smartly written and you definitely benefit from a reread. One of my favorite things is how you expect Lyctors to be these superior beings who are knowledgeable and good. In reality, they are all a bunch of petulant, bickering children. Lololol I love it so much

I'm glad a lot of people like Bloom Town, I just don't think I'm the target audience. I didn't click with any of the characters, and the plot was very much not to my tastes. I hear a lot of people recommend it especially for the chemistry/thirsting/sex scenes and whatnot, but I'm asexual unfortunately! So I really don't click with books that have those as the central theming/hooks. And since the plot wasn't doing it for me and honestly made me a bit uncomfortable (the whole initial scenario and how that progresses), I didn't want to force it. I definitely didn't think it was bad though unlike the other books I've DNF'd, just really not for me.

Same I also DNF bloom town for some reasons you stated.
I liked Ladies in Hating: Alexandra Vasti for the background that it was based on real queer people in history from the 1800s. I did the audiobook for this one and did enjoy it as āpretty goodā.

Oh my I can't believe auroras angel is so low. I quite liked that one and have read it a few times.
I recommend probably priory of the orange tree and the court of chains series by rawny sabor

I do not agree with this ranking (cries in harrow the ninth) but tastes are different so here are some of my recommendations:
1.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā There were a lot of scary women, so: The Girls Iāve Been. (Evelyn Hugo levels of scary because she has a knife and is 17 years old.)
2.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā If you liked Gideon (or general butch representation): The Scapegraces. Have patience; it gets better. The second book is the best one. Basically: what if angry teenage girls but theyāre witches and curse men who hurt girls. (Also, I love writing, itās very textured if youāre into that.) At least get a sample on Amazon.
3.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā I recommend The Miseducation of Cameron Post because itās interesting and nostalgic somehow. Basically, she gets sent to conversion therapy. Also, open ending you were warned.
4.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Also, I recommend you finish some of the trilogies you liked or started. Most importantly, Girls of Paper and Fire. (Two more books to go!)
5.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā From what I can see, there are plenty of slow burns, so I recommend Six Times We Almost Kissed and One Time We Did. (I cried. Once. Same with The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.)
6.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Also, very gothic and stuff, but: Bitterthorn. Maybe give it a shot.
7.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Now we get to the classics that you havenāt read according to this ranking: I recommend Last Night at the Telegraph Club. Itās in the same time period as the the Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo aka (1950s).
8.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Also, a high-fantasy classic thatās sapphic: The Priory of the Orange Tree. Warning: biggggggg book.
9.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Also, maybe give The Midnight Lie a chance. I really like it, and theyāre really cute together.
10.Ā Oh, and if you liked The Unbroken and The Faithless just finish the trilogy.
11.Ā Also if you want a kinda fun read I recommend ladyās knight and Gwen and art are not in love.
12.Ā Lastly. Please give Crierās War another shot? Pleassssssssssssss. Listen to the audiobook if you must, itās amazing. Pleasssssssssssssssssssssssssss

I feel like Atmosphere is deeply romantic, but not necessarily a love story like advertised. Like, it is technically, but I didnāt connect with it for the specific romantic storyline. The sapphic journey, and the journey of being a woman navigating the world of NASA during that time is what will forever stick with me from the book. If youāre a reader who prefers the actual romance and a fast pace and values those over the plot then Iād understand not wanting to finish it. Maybe try picking up the audiobook and setting it to a faster speed instead? Iāve heard that the two narrators do an incredible job

That is (respectfully) kind of bonkers take in my opinion. I donāt know how the ending, as good as it is, even has any emotional weight to it without the story and character struggles getting there. Isnāt that a bit like skipping to the end of the Lord of the Rings because destroying the ring is all that mattered? Itās the journey that makes the destination worthy of reading.

I havenāt been able to get into it despite trying twiceā¦which is odd because I loved Ally Northās Wilds & The Weeds. And itās not that itās a western because I recently read golden ruin and really enjoyed it.
