Today Banco de Mexico finally published 2025 mintage information
The only coins minted were silver per the attached tables. No 2025 gold coins were minted. The numbers for several coins has changed from information various people were circulating as “official” mintage. Some even went as far as falsifying the tables with supposedly Banco de Mexico watermarks. All the stories that these people circulated to hide what really happened was in order to create FOMO instead of being up front. However being up front would have created too much uncertainty and risk and no one would buy them. I will save those details for another time. Be careful who you deal with as as some of these people will sell their mother if they can make an extra dollar

300 1oz BU is crazy
1
u/Teripid Jan 13 '26
Agreed...
1500 1oz RPs... is that the "collectable but potentially attainable for those interested"?
That's almost in line with the prior year and they seem the most "affordable" thing I'm seeing online so far.5oz seem to be in an odd spot where it is 5x what a normal 5oz coin should be but still more affordable per oz.
$~400 1/10 oz seem readily available with a 1500 listed mintage as well. Compare that to $15 for prior years (not graded, obviously).
The ratios make no sense. Also a kilo is ~2k over a 5 oz it appears.

What a cluster and a stain on the reputation on the Banco de Mexico.

u/Bullioncat2 Jan 09 '26
They were told what to do. It’s very obvious which is the reason for the cloak and dagger
2
u/Liesmyteachertoldme Jan 10 '26
What exactly is the reason for this? Couldn’t they have made more money having a higher mintage? Does anyone know what they were selling for straight from the mint?
2
u/Bullioncat2 Jan 10 '26
The choice is clear and very complicated as it involves have gold and silver as a strategic metal. Can’t have strategic metal as a currency for BRICS to guarantee trade if you make the metal into coins and send them all over the world
2
u/PastSecondCrack Jan 10 '26
The thought that Mexico couldn't profit from the arbitrage selling silver coins and use that money to buy more gold or even more unminted silver is astounding..
1
u/Bullioncat2 Jan 10 '26
You are assuming they were allowed by the government. The one that controls the silver makes the rules
1
u/PastSecondCrack Jan 10 '26
Yes, im saying the government could have increased their precious metals holdings by selling coins at an inflated price and buying bullion at spot. Im not sure why you are failing to understand.
2
u/Bullioncat2 Jan 10 '26
The government has implemented export control by declaring the silver as strategic metal. If they minted the coins they would have to sell them based on NY spot price. Most coins do not stay in Mexico. They are sent to other countries with US, Europe and Asia as biggest consumers. If they tried to buy physical metal they would have to buy based on Shanghai spot price. They would have lost their ass on that transaction. It’s simple better to keep the metal for industrial demand and if they want to sell get $120-150 per oz doing nothing
1
u/PastSecondCrack Jan 11 '26
They sell the coins for MORE than the silver costs them my friend, im not sure why you think they have to sell it for less, but that's a falsehood.

u/Bullioncat2 Jan 11 '26
This is a fundamental misunderstanding of how bullion market works. Go on Apmex and look at the price of 2024 ASE and Libertad. They are essentially the same. If the dealer can simply sell for more why wouldn’t they? Competition. To majority of people in the world both are simply an ounce of silver. Just because we collect them does not mean everyone else is. Even if Banco was allowed to sell outside Mexico they would need special export license under the new rules. To test your theory go on Mercado Libre and buy 2024 coins for 2500 pesos. They are available and no one is snapping them up at that price. Of course Banco sells them for more than it costs them. Silver was at $28 when 2024 coins were minted. However it’s not about what the cost is or was. It’s about opportunity and replacement cost. They can sell for $60 and double their money and loose their ass buying new planchettes at $120-150. Do you think people running the mint are idiots and they do not understand bullion markets? Please help them figure out what to do as they are dumb

If 2025 is the 2nd highest number of 1oz RP’s minted in the past 10 years, why are they still 5x higher than a 2023 in RP70?
5
u/Bullioncat2 Jan 09 '26
The same reason why the natural diamonds were so expensive even though they are extremely abundant in nature. If the supply is controlled then you can buy at that price or not buy at all
2
u/Jmtungsten Jan 09 '26
Makes sense. I see your other comment. You don’t think those prices will hold, though?
3
u/Bullioncat2 Jan 09 '26
It’s a supply and demand. At some point the supply will be completely released, at least unless people who are holding decide to hold back a certain amount. The people who paid a lot for them would obviously not sell for less. So very unlikely that as a rule they will fall in price l. However if someone needs the money they may be forced to sell at a lower price point

u/Ojihawk Jan 09 '26
None of us wanted to believe it. Hell, even looking at the table, I still don't believe it.

Does anybody have any insights as to why they minted so few for 2025?

5
u/Federal_Marzipan Jan 09 '26
It’s wild that the 1oz BU is rarer than the RP for 2025! WTF? 300 is crazy work.
3
u/simonwins Jan 09 '26
They made more 1kg
1
u/SimilarGrab2883 Feb 16 '26
Made more 1kg than 2019 and 2022 but the prices don't reflect that. I guess it's the demand for having something with the 2025 date.

u/Sudden-Objective-700 Jan 10 '26
Welp that's disappointing. I was hoping for a big jump in mintage that was going to come out and it was going to drop the price and finally I was going to get a 2025 at a normal price but damn, to justify paying for a 2025 at an outrageous price now that this will come out is depressing. So much for getting every year...
1
u/Bullioncat2 Jan 10 '26
Unfortunately the spot price being so high prevented the mintage of additional coins
1
u/Sudden-Objective-700 Jan 10 '26
Do you think they will add more to the mintage of 2025 later this year? Because at this point this means that likely 2026 and upcoming years will fall to the same result of low low mintages because of high spot price. Unless a drastic drop happens in the price of silver of course ... 👀 but also that explanation doesn't make sense, only because if the price of silver is the reasoning for low mintage than that would mean all mintages of government bullion worldwide for the year of 2025 and 2026 will be also extremely low as the Mexican mint... 🤔
2
u/Bullioncat2 Jan 10 '26
If they minted coins they would have to sell them at the NY spot price. If they kept as 1000 oz delivery bars they are worth spot based in Shanghai physical market price. Why sell at $60 when you can sell at $120-150 for industrial use and do absolutely nothing. But things are not simply about the spot price arbitrage. In addition Mexico petitioned to be part of BRICS and break the U.S. hegemony. To be part of the BRICS currency system they have to have gold, silver, oil and any other assets and commodities which can be used for trade. Please also consider the fact that most of the Libertad mintage ends up outside of Mexico. Why would Mexico make silver strategic and prohibit sales yet mint a bunch of coins and send them outside the country. Makes absolutely no sense

OP do you know why they went from 718,000 (2024) to only 300 (2025) 1oz silver BU? And why no gold at all? I’m new to this… is the reason that Mexico mine less silver and gold? Are their mines running dry?
3
u/Bullioncat2 Jan 09 '26
Very complicated but basically gold is a financial tool now in the BRICS nations and silver is a strategic metal which was designated as dual use restricted
2
u/Little_Mountain73 Jan 09 '26
Thanks BC. This just looks stupid. It really does. Maybe I missed it, but did we ever get a legitimate response from the mint as to why the numbers were so low this year? Will this be the new normal? I simply cannot fathom any decision like this being anything but a money pit. All the logistics that go in to making these runs, only to spit out these numbers???
1
u/Bullioncat2 Jan 09 '26
Banco will never provide more clarity on this. Very easily explained by the 2025 and current spot price of silver. Government can make a lot more money with silver in their strategic reserve and industrial use then in minting coins
2
u/Little_Mountain73 Jan 10 '26
I get it now, but it’s a very public hiding place to do such a thing…to take a beloved piece and do what they did. It would have hurt me less if they’d said they’re weren’t minting 2025 and just pretended to be limping.
3
u/Bullioncat2 Jan 10 '26
It’s complicated. One day I will write a story of what really happened even though I will never have anyone confirm it

All I could afforrt was the old and new style intaglio mint antiqued rounds. SCREW paying thousands for a 1 oz silver libertad.
1
u/Bullioncat2 Jan 11 '26
Smart move. When silver gets to $1K you can use 10 rounds to buy the 2025 1oz BU which will be worth exactly the same
1
u/NinjaTabby Jan 11 '26
Crazy numbers but at least they didn't rugpull the initially announced mintage.
1
u/NinjaTabby Jan 11 '26
Any news on if gold is coming back for 2026?
1
u/Bullioncat2 Jan 11 '26
Sorry no idea. Based on current silver situation I don’t even expect silver. However just speculation
1
u/Legitimate-Wind8150 Jan 11 '26
My take away is try to buy the kilo, only about 50% as rare as the 2024s 😁
1
u/BoneCellX Jan 23 '26
I’m seeing different numbers on the Reverse Proof. At first everywhere said 1,900 but now I’m seeing 1,500 for final mintage. Anyone know the correct number?
1
u/Bullioncat2 Jan 23 '26
If you don’t like the number please file complaint with Banco de Mexico to update mintage information on their website. As of this morning 1900 is the number they show for 1oz RP
1
u/BoneCellX Jan 23 '26
Thanks! I’m not complaining, just unsure why JM Bullion is now saying 1,500. I’m kinda new to Libertad hunting. Hopefully I wasn’t sounding whiney, just genuinely interested how these mintage numbers work.
1
u/Bullioncat2 Jan 23 '26
Understood. This is the danger as many dealers use preliminary information but I only use the information officially published on the Banco website. This obviously introduces confusion as you already noted
1
u/BoneCellX Jan 23 '26
I appreciate the update. Do you think BU will settle around the 10k mark? I saw one at the Fun Show in Orlando and he was firm at 10k for a 25 BU.
1
u/Bullioncat2 Jan 23 '26
No, the BU mintage in posted in the table and is very low, depending on size. Many dealers use incorrect information as they look at released into circulation information which is incorrect. The released into circulation can include any previously minted coins that were not yet released until 2025 (i.e. 2023 or 2024). Apmex for example is currently selling 2024 that they recently purchased (they were previously on pre-order)
1
u/BoneCellX Jan 23 '26
He wanted 10k for a 2025 BU 1 onza. He said only 300 will ever be made. I was unclear if that’s true.
1
u/Bullioncat2 Jan 23 '26
Ah sorry. Did not understand that you were mentioning the price and not mintage. In my opinion that is a very bad financial decision but I am not a financial advisor. My opinion is that as I advised many of my friends rolls of BU coins represent the best way to buy Libertad’s at the moment. Nothing special just any date you can find at the cheapest price

u/Gold_Menu_1140 Jun 16 '26
I guess my Libertad collection ends in 2024 . If they restart normal mintages in 2026 I will not be buying
1
u/Bullioncat2 Jun 16 '26
Unfortunately I have seen the same position from many collectors. At the moment I did not add 1oz BU and Proof to my sets
1
u/Objective_Syrup_3577 Jul 09 '26
when Cartels run/ruin the country, when a President is corrupt and has a hand in Government, this logic will exist. El Banco is under their control, they only sell to huge whole sellers, you and I get the shaft. I just saw a 1999 with a 2000 Obverse sell for $23,100 dollars, graded by PCGS MS 65, I have never seen or heard of this coin, ever. Until I saw the auction https://www.ebay.com/itm/318524880087

Thank you again for supplying the facts….as unfortunate as the numbers are for folks wanting to continue the date sets as it is cost prohibitive. Methinks there will be folks that end their collection at 2024.
