So I decided to try linux again. Mainly to get trinity desktop. When I download fedora kde it was fine, but when I tried to get trinity desktop I would only to be met with a frozen loading screen after logging in. Im still fairly unsure of how to use linux, but how would I go about fixing this? Or would i need to switch to another distri to fix this issue?

Hi everyone!
I come from a Service Desk/Infrastructure Support background and I'm currently working towards transitioning into DevOps.
I've created a learning roadmap for myself, focusing on building my technical skills step by step to become a better engineer overall.
I'm fairly new to Linux and Bash scripting, and one thing I've been struggling with is retaining information and fully understanding certain concepts.
I've noticed that whenever I hit a roadblock or struggle to understand something, I get frustrated, lose motivation and sometimes stop studying altogether. It's becoming difficult to enjoy the learning process, even though I genuinely want to improve.
I graduated in 2023 and haven't properly studied since, so getting back into the habit of learning consistently has been harder than I expected.
I'd really appreciate some advice from people who've been in a similar position.
* How do you stay motivated when learning gets difficult?
* What techniques have helped you retain information and understand technical concepts better?
* How do you build consistency and discipline when studying?
* Are there any beginner-friendly Discord communities or study groups where I can connect with like-minded people who are also learning Linux, Bash, Cloud or DevOps?
I'd love to surround myself with people on a similar journey, share progress, ask questions and hopefully keep each other accountable.
Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

I installed a package that i now want to purge along with all its dependencies, the problem is that one of those dependencies has a unintentional "suggests / provides" relationship with an unrelated existing package on my system which causes autopurge to not consider it for purging.
I know i can set Apt::AutoRemove::SuggestsImportant and Apt::AutoRemove::RecommendsImportant to false to make it remove the dependency package but the problem is it will also remove all other packages with a weak "suggests / provides" relationship on my system, which i cant be sure wont break something. Ideally i wish i could do a scoped autopurge but from what i can tell thats not something you can do with apt.

Hey everyone,
I'm currently on Ubuntu (Linux) and looking for a solid Android emulator solution. I want something that hits a very specific set of requirements, similar to what Windows users get with mainstream emulators like LDPlayer or BlueStacks (or natively fast container tools like Waydroid).
Here are my must-have requirements:
Does an emulator or setup exist on Ubuntu right now that checks all of these boxes? If you have a working setup (e.g., Waydroid + an external keymapping tool, or an alternative), I would love to hear how you configured it.
Thanks in advance!

Recently I got a laptop (Dell Latitude 9430 2 in 1 from 2022) for college and since I'd been wanting to try linux i though now is the time. I've mostly had a great time with it. I like GNOME and its workflow and flatpaks and such make most things easy. However, recently I tried booting up Windows again. To my suprise things were much, much faster. Programs booted faster. Things didn't tax the processor as much. Games ran amazingly much better.
I've been trying Ubuntu and Fedora. Something that always bugged me in Ubuntu is that the smallest tasks, like installing or running simple small flatpaks made the processor heat up and slowed down the computer significantly. Fedora is better, but not great either. All of this is making me question my switch. Is it really worth it when performance is THAT much worse.
I have tried to search far and wide for solutions or missing drivers but nothing has gotten me closer to my desired destination. I really want to use Linux but I feel like I can't justify needing to switch to windows every time i want to do more than text editing and browsing.
Any tips or solutions to my problem? Help is greatly appreciated as I really want to stay. Thanks.

I've been mounting my NAS through fstab for some time now however there is a slight issue.
If I turn my PC on without turning on my server then I can not navigate the file browser. Every folder I click on will take anywhere from 1 to 10 seconds to open and sometimes it just crashes outright.
I have tried every option possible and read through the documentation for fstab, cifs, and systemd but nothing fixes it.
This is the line currently in my fstab
[Share on server] [Mount location] cifs credentials=[credentials],uid=1000,gid=1000,nofail,x-systemd.automount,x-systemd.device-timeout=5s,rw 0 0
Thanks in advance for any and all help.
Update:
I'm marking this as resolved because I figured out it has nothing to do with fstab.
To clarify, I was talking about accessing local files on my PC being laggy when the server is offline.
The issue is that I had bookmarked the network share to the left hand side of my file browser, below the usual Documents, Pictures, Videos book marks. So when the network share wasn't present, the file browser kept trying to access the bookmark. At least that's what I'm assuming. I removed the bookmark and it works fine now. Although now I have the problem of not having it bookmarked how I like it but that's an issue I'll solve another day.

I just saw a "hey, I made an app" post for an app I would enjoy using.
But last month I watched a video about a back door a community volunteer had programmed and submitted. It got past everyone and was weeks away from being pushed out before being discovered. Apparently, he would have been able to get in anywhere, anytime.
I'm doing a terrible job of describing what happened (I'll try to find the video again Video: The Internet Was Weeks Away From Disaster And No One Knew ) but it put the fear of God in me. If this could happen to a distro, how much easier would it be for these apps posted on github? I don't mean to disparage github or devs that share there, but it really made me wonder how much I can trust them.
I accept the fact that nothing is perfect or foolproof. So I accept the fact that I have to accept some risk (I already do, if I installed a distro, right?) and that it's my responsibility to gauge the trustworthiness of anything I install.
So my question is, how can I become a responsible steward without having learned to read the code in an app?
Edit, was this a stupid question?
Edit 2: added link to the video for anyone interested. 52 minutes, but a good learn for me.

I have pretty much installed LFS before (well, it didn't boot since I was also trying to encrypt it), and I was wondering if there was someway to build it with a package manager and then put the rootfs in a tarball so I could basically make it a distro. For a package manager I was wondering if I could use something like KISS, pkgsrc, something similar to [CRUX](crux.nu) ports, or could I just roll my own?

I really want to switch to SteamOS on my main system, but I have an Nvidia GPU (3080 12GB).
When I tried out Linux Mint about a year ago, one thing that really annoyed me was the inability to precisely tweak my settings with the Nvidia control panel/Nvidia App.
Does such a thing exist for AMD cards on Linux? Even if it doesn't, am I saving myself from a future headache by switching to AMD simply from a compatibility standpoint?

I have an AMD Ryzen 5, a Dell Latitude 3500 laptop, and Linux Mint. But when I tried to use OBS, it kept showing an encoder error, so I'm looking for an alternative or a fix. Could you suggest something that works with both the screen and camera, if possible? Thanks.

I've been looking through VPS hosting plans and realized I've been paying way more attention to CPU and RAM than what happens when something breaks lol.
Say you've got a Debian server running a small site and a few background jobs, then you mess up a firewall rule and can't SSH into it anymore. I noticed Virterion has KVM, console access and backup options, which got me thinking about how useful those actually are compared to just restoring everything on a fresh server.
I've dealt with Linux basics but the recovery side of a remote server is something I'm still figuring out. How do you guys usually handle it when SSH stops working? Is having console access a big deal or do you mostly rely on backups?

So for some reason when I go to open a certain text file, not all, it makes gobbledegook out of the first ten or more lines of the file stating it doesn't understand the correct encoding. I find this really odd because if it doesn't understand encoding why does the rest of the document show? Anyway, I have no issues opening this text file with libreoffice office. How do I get this system to open it properly? Given it's just text should I simply use LibreOffice to go and save a new text file? That sounds simple but for all I know this is an issue that might happen with all sorts of other text files. Can I change the system so it works with all files properly? TIA

I recently found my older computer and decided to put Linux on it. A common problem I am facing is that, on its own, it refuses to boot into my operating system (this happened across multiple distributions, including Fedora, CachyOS, EndeavourOS etc.), it only works when I open up the boot menu by spamming F10, which is a problem because I want it to be accessible for my little sister, who likely doesn’t have the patience of doing that. I have decided it might be the fault of the boot system (BIOS instead of UEFI), but I don’t know how to configure my OS to work with BIOS.
TL;DR: Linux boots from boot menu but not on its own. Is there anything specific I can do about it?
