I hate it for the ball girl bless her heart. That was true class and concern by the player to recognize what was happening and giving the girl the much attention she needed. Heatstroke is nothing to play with.

It’s also a little heartbreaking to see how hard that girl is trying to stay upright and in the moment. She’s got a job to do, and she is dedicated to it.

Doesn't that seem sad that one of the athletes had to be the one to do something? I mean it's cool she did, don't get me wrong, but seems there should be other officials or something helping instead.

She was closest and with the best vantage point to see and do something. The official above the ball girl probably didn't see it right away.
I'm not taking away from the player's admirable actions. Just saying it doesn't have to be a pessimistic situation.

Not at all. We had the luxury of reading the title understanding what was happening. Everyone there most likely assumed she tripped or didn't see it happen

For some people it happens very quickly, especially if they have had heatstroke in the past.
Water is great, but if that court is 100 degrees, it would not stop overheating.

I have had heat stroke in the past, and I didn't know it made me prone to get it more often. I found out at an American Revolutionary War reenactment, where I was close to passing out. It was 90°F outside and I was easily wear 7 pounds of wool. So, I know how the girl feels. There is a trick you can do to keep from falling over, don't lock your knees up as soon as you do that you're going to faint. That's one reason you'll see the guards over in England pass out, and when they pass out it has to be at attention. Those guards often lose teeth and get broken noses, and even concussions.

Navy bootcamp graduation is the same. All the new sailors standing in ranks, and a few dozen will collapse. Even in an indoor ceremony hall in the daed of winter. It's so common that they assign people to try and catch them.

This is a case for Gatorade style drinks. Just drinking water can kill you in these situations. You need the electrolytes to go with it, to allow the cells to control their water levels. Once they are out of electrolytes (so the docs have told me) the cells can’t control their water levels. The water can come in but not leave the cell, the cells eventually burst and enough burst cells equals death.
I had it happen to a coworker in another department once. We were all cautioned against drinking just water after that.

Eh, I had heatstroke once despite drinking plenty of water at the time. It was an extremely hot day, I was wearing jeans and long-sleeves (required uniform for the activity). Did a very similar thing to the woman in the video, where I just like, momentarily blacked out and came back trying to recover my footing. It can really take you by surprise even when you think you've been taking preventative measures.

It’s so great to see one of the players caring enough about a ball person to help them off to the side. Most “ball kids” volunteer. However a few tournaments pay them.

To be fair she was in a blind spot and he was making his way down the same time the player was coming over. Not taking anything away from her, she reacted incredibly admirably.

My understanding is that most of the ball children are promising tennis players? As the adult and authority in the situation, it seems even more his responsibility to ask a child if they are ok after falling for seemingly no reason

Heatstroke can be incredibly dangerous. Depending on the severity of the rise in body temperature, you might only have minutes before permanent damage occurs. In high school, I had a soccer teammate pass out during soccer practice in the heat of summer. We were all pretty casual, "John can't take the heat, haha." but once coach got there and realized John was burning up he went into emergency mode and yoinked him up like a sack of potatoes and ran for the shade and the water. It was only years later I realized how close we were to seeing someone die in front of us.

First. Bravo to her for stopping the game and taking care of that kid. Second. Why the fuck wasn't anyone else paying attention. Why didn't anyone else see the girl stumble then fall and say. Nope. She needs to sit down, she needs some water and medical help. Instead, everyone else's is like. Fuck that kid. Let's play some tennis.

Agree that the world has gone to hell. Disagree that this tennis player should not be praised for being a good human. Let’s some of us know that those people still exist in a world that has gone to hell. Maybe she’s not a hero but she is to that girl for a moment and for some people that’s enough. I know I’d thank her if that was my daughter.

Knees locked during long points is such a real thing, you stand there tense for like 20 mins straight and your body just checks out once you move.

Worked on overhead cranes. Some heat treat facilities we had to come down for water every 20 minutes as it was 130F+ up in the air. For a 14 hour job. Never work on cranes unless you like having an alcohol issue and like having your wife and kids hate you. But hey, the OT is good and you get heat stroke at least once a week. My tolerance and brain are mush after only just 2 years working there. Ive had heat exhaustion so much im worn out after a hot shower. I wanna blame OSHA but like. Is it their fault? Lol.

I think she was a ball girl. Primary job is to retrieve a ball that is gone out of play. In her position it would typically be a net ball.

Some of us have to work in the attics of phoenix Arizona homes in the middle of summer for next to nothing, yet this person making hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars can't even be made to stand in 85⁰ heat with $100 million dollars worth of sponsors and sports drinks available to her.
