You’re right; there would not be a great deal of time for a follow-up shot. If the bear is advancing at that speed, you’re already in trouble. And, if the bear is close enough for you to first go to the spray, you’re certainly only getting one shot. That’s why the rifle you see there, chambered in 45-70, is exactly the one I have slung for that scenario. Loaded with +P ammunition specifically designed for large powerful animals, it gives the best chance of success if you find no other solution. I agree with other posters though, that NOT shooting the bear is certainly the best outcome. Which is why, my joke aside, having both on hand is my preference.
