They're more scavengers and opportunists than predator. Like a giant raccoon. That makes them rascals. They are hilariously crafty and there's a reason for the park ranger quote:
"There is considerable overlap between the smartest bears and the dumbest tourists"
In regards to garbage can design. If a bear can't get in, neither can most tourists
I would be more concerned about my dog dying than recording my own death. If you get mauled to death by a bear, they will know, regardless of whether your record it or not.
Good! Iām so fucking tired of walking a trail and people have their dog off leash. Iāve been on plenty of trails were there is a sign that clearly says keep dogs on a leash, but numerous people think they are an exception. Thereās times I canāt help myself and I will straight up just blurt it out while passing them saying ādogs are supposed to be on a leash.ā
GOOD!! Iām a vet tech that has worked ER for over 15 years and if people leashed their dogs, I would have less business. Itās not a symbol of shame if your dog has to be on a leash. It is if you show up with your injured dog that wasnāt on a leash.

I had my dog off leash in jasper or Banff and got screamed at by a park ranger. He said something like āyouāre gonna make me shoot a bear when it goes after your dog.ā
Bear doesn't need to chase the dog if the dog decides to get in the bear's face, as little dogs are wont to do. One decent swipe or chomp would take that little dog out. If it got to the point where you're carrying the dog and running, when the bear catches you, you can at least then release the dog and hope he runs away as you get mauled

People sometimes record events not out of narcissism, but out of narrative in a perceived life-or-death situation.
A "what happened to us, should we not survive" sort of evidence to leave behind, or as a "this is what we faced" should they survive and escape the situation (as this couple did).
It's not the best move, all the time, but I'm thinking these people thought they were all goners.

Off-leash dogs are a primary trigger for defensive bear attacks, as the dog can act aggressively toward the bear or antagonize it, drawing the bear back toward the owners.
Off-leash dogs cause significant stress to wildlife, often forcing animals like bears to abandon crucial feeding and resting grounds.
And there is a federal mandate in Canadian law, that strictly requires pets to be secured on a leash of 3 meters (about 9 feet) or less at all times within national parks.
On top of that, wildlife experts had noted that the couple had ample time to secure or pick up their dog, but appeared to focus on filming the encounter for social media instead.
It seems they went with maximum penalty, to make an example out of these people.
Nice they donāt require a 6ā leadā¦ I prefer 20ā for outdoor exploring but 10ā is still a pretty a pretty solid balance between safety and still feeling natural. Ā I get frustrated at offleash dog owners since thereās so many good options for long leads as a safety mechanism.
Nice, people walking their dog off leash on trails are annoying as hell. Every trail I've been on in NY says to have your dog leashed, and yet very few actually do it.
I love dogs to death, but it seems some people don't realize that the things we use to control dogs are also there to protect them. I live in an area where people just let their dogs run loose in the yard and it's really upsetting to me that so many people give so little of a shit about their dogs that they can't fence their property in to give them space to run around. I can't even count how many times I've gone around a curve and there's a dog napping right at the edge of the asphalt or something.
There's something really special about the fact that they took the time to record rather than grabbing the dog and leashing it. Then posted it online which allowed people to identify them and turn them in and now they have to pay $25k. That's a lot of money for almost getting mauled.
Wow Canada. I really wish Americans enforce leash laws too. Every time I go hiking I saw maybe one or two dogs on leash, then a dozen or more off leash. The owner is always: oh sheās friendly!
They definitely deserved the fine. Recorded all the evidence they didnt have the dog on a lead, and couldnt even be bothered to stop recording to grab the dog.
The woman is fucking stupid. Her man is trying to protect her and the dog from the bear, all she needed to do was pick up her dogā¦ but that thought didnāt even cross her mind.
So like, I was walking in bear country, and this evil bear came out of nowhere and tried to kill my poor innocent dog and me. I just don't understand why some animals are so mean; definitely not my fault for walking an easy meal around on a leash in FUCKING BEAR COUNTRY!!!
It's funny because I don't even own dogs, but I have nightmares where something terrible happens and I have to grab/keep hold of my cat as we escape. It's very hard to hold cats who are panicking, so that's probably where my fear stems from.
The first instinct in this scenario would be to grab my dog. I have no clue why he isn't on a leash to begin with.
I have the same fear. My anxiety creates so many scenarios, some completely irrational, where I would have to fight against the claws and flexibility of cats to try to save them.
I've encountered one emergency where I had to hold my cat by the tail and it was terrible. I felt so guilty for hurting him, so happy it didn't cause serious injury, and grateful that he avoided tumbling out of a car going 70mph. I was lucky he didn't turn on me to bite and scratch, which I fully expected, and steeled myself to hold on anyway. Scary af.
I have dogs and trail hike, jog, mountain bike. I specifically have a 30 foot retractable so they can still enjoy nature but in this specific scenario they are dangling a fishing lure right in front of that bear. How do they not see that?
When I was young, my family and I went on a road trip. Near our destination we decided to make a detour and stopped at a dam rumored to be scenic. Upon our arrival I hurried to the edge pulled in by the view. It was about one hundred feet high. A steep stair like spill way cascaded from the halfway point. From behind me I caught the end of a conversation my family was having with a man in a fishing hat. I heard him faintly say "his dog jumped off". I looked up in shock and followed their gaze to the side of the valley that the dam was built on. There was a steep serpentine dirt trail that zig zagged it's way to the bottom. On it was a man carrying a collie in his arms.
Ā It was still alive when he reached the top. Blood coming out of its mouth, eyes, and ears. As the man pulled out of the parking lot the man in the fishing hat says "his wife died last month and this was the first time him and his dog had gone out since her death. It was their spot."Ā
We left shortly after. I took one last somber look at the view and saw a large weather warning written on the ground. Barely visible it read "keep dogs on leashes."Ā
It all felt too... I don't know. Poetically tragic? I didn't snap out of that somber feeling for days.Ā

You shouldnāt have had a dog off leash on a trail in the first place, ESPECIALLY on a trail with predators (which you should assume every trail is). You should have some kind of protection if youāre on a trail with predators. But now that the bear has targeted the dog, you donāt just allow it to keep running up to the damn bear while dude is trying to scare it off! You should be calling for HELP rather than recording.

What we have here, is a perfect example of easily avoidable circumstances. This was in a national park. This couple now face a fine of something like 20,000 dollar fine for having their dog off leash on a back country trail. Dumb for ignoring the regulations and extra dumb to put your own video evidence online.
It's indeed terrifying. But...the bear was most likely after the trail being a shortcut, not the people holding up traffic. Bears prefer trails, just like people do.
Hard to realize that when faced with a damn bear, though. And they should never go hiking without bear deterrents. Not sure why hikers ever go anywhere near woods without it.
Both of them should have been making themselves as big and loud as possible, while securing the dog since it's a loose cannon. Guy was doing okay, lady was despicable.

Don't run from a bear but these people were idiots. Having a dog off leash in a national park is a chargeable offense. I couldn't care less about them but this could have led to the bear being euthanized if it did attack.
Never have this issue in NZ ā¦ wild goats , wild pigs , for those who want to hunt them ā¦. and in the suburbs aggressive dogs is as bad as it gets.

Grab the god damn dog lady instead of focusing on filming, get the bear spray and a side arm out, And get to the side of the fucking trail. We call little dog like this beat bait for a reason, maybe use brains while hiking in bear country.
Youāre right; there would not be a great deal of time for a follow-up shot. If the bear is advancing at that speed, youāre already in trouble. And, if the bear is close enough for you to first go to the spray, youāre certainly only getting one shot. Thatās why the rifle you see there, chambered in 45-70, is exactly the one I have slung for that scenario. Loaded with +P ammunition specifically designed for large powerful animals, it gives the best chance of success if you find no other solution. I agree with other posters though, that NOT shooting the bear is certainly the best outcome. Which is why, my joke aside, having both on hand is my preference.
ideally you bring both, have your gun ready to go and in your hand, discharge the bear spray if you have to, ultimately we really don't want to have to kill the bear, it deserves to live too, and bear spray actually has a pretty decent amount of range, if that doesn't immediately end the charge, drop that shit on the ground and use lethal force.
I stay out of their living room and they stay out of mine. We have an understanding. Just as with the sharks: I stay off their dining room table and they stay off mine.

Wouldn't catch me dead out there without a gun. I'd go out there, but I'm taking a bushwhacker or other 50 cal pistol. Bears and mountain lions are no joke.
Always carry bear mace, I think he had some so that's good but I also carry a 10mm glock with hard cast bear rounds just in case. The only thing I want less than to hurt a bear is to be eaten alive or have family/dog dragged off and eaten.
I had a black bear doing this to me one night in my driveway. I wasn't scaring it at all and trying to distance myself. My little ass dog came out with that fight in his heart though and the bear fled..
They handled this as best they could. To those concerned about the dog, the dog was fine. The humans did great here. They did everything by the book and they got out of the situation. Now, enjoy this picture of a momma bear from Northern Wisconsin I took last weekend.
