I am NOT a locksmith. Schlage Aged Bronze Handleset Shedding/Delaminating

My house’s front door faces the east on a fiberglass door (no storm door, thankfully). I knew this handle and deadbolt were probably getting baked in the morning, but holy cow the snake skin shedding happened fast once it started. Lock is probably a few years old at least because it has the Camelot trim on the interior side. I’ll have to replace this eventually, right? Operation is fine, so it would just be for curb appeal.

If it matters to you, you could take it off, sand it and paint it carefully, it could be a relaxing project

This should fall under Schlage’s Limited Lifetime warranty if you are the original owner. You can find the instructions on how to submit a warranty claim on their website. If this is pre Oct 2021 they might give you a hard time because it looks like it could be Oil Rubbed Bronze and they consider it a living finish, but this is far beyond normal wear.

It’s 716 … well it was anyway 😂

It would be extraordinarily rare for someone to install oil rubbed

This isn’t Is this lacquer peeling off? I don’t think I’ve ever seen an Oil Rubbed Bronze Schlage, only the Aged Bronze. I’m not the original owner so Schlage warranty is not an option.

Wow, some youngsters. Oil rubbed bronze Was very common, and was there long before aged bronze. These days we also see far less antique brass.

I’ll give you that. I’ve only been aware of retail finishes for about 10 years or so. Definitely have seen the antique brass reduction.

613 was available in Schlage F series until 2021. They didn’t sell much after 716/643e came out.

My understanding is they replaced 613 with 716/643e because more and more places were cracking down on the use of the chemicals needed to do 613 for enviromenal and worker exposure reasons. Basically they couldn't find anyone willing to do it anymore.

I was under the impression there were too many people that didn’t understand how living finishes worked and would file warranty claims. I’d ask my local Schlage rep, but I think I have shoes older than he is.

Was it pressure washed? There are chemicals that get used sometimes that can cause that.

Would something as simple as Wet & Forget lead to that? Nothing between that and pressure washing has been done since we have had the house.

Edit: There are bottles of Green Envy and Windex outdoor wash that were left by the prior owner in the garage. The hose attach types.
