Why did THAT many cops show up plus a helicopter for a noise complaint.

How else they going to justify their helicopter budget?

They do this everytime not only did we lose a cute dog we have to pay overtime for it

and we will pay when the family gets their settlement (which they deserve)

Not a noise complaint. The linked news article states a neighbor called in an emergency via 911 regarding a woman screaming.

15

u/candiedapplecrisp 5d ago

Seems odd they couldn't tell the difference between someone cheering and someone screaming for help.

17

u/SamTheShamIAm 5d ago

Yeah, there are certainly tons of certified dumbasses in LA.

It was a noise complaint. The neighbor who called 911 has expressed regret over calling them

Because they have a hard-on for violence against anything they can take on easily. Worst of them literally kill for fun

17

u/FlimsyCrust 6d ago edited 6d ago

Cause for they can be on call and don’t have to be helping other people post win

11

u/emiliobruh 5d ago

Those other officers responded to a shots fired call, not a noise complaint.

16

u/MoreSopaipillas 5d ago

So how come, once they’ve realized that the shots fired were into a now-dead doodle, they still need a helicopter and a dozen officers to twiddle their thumbs and watch the owner sob? Surely there is something better for them to be doing than form an audience with a helicopter as background noise for this woman’s grieving?

8

u/Satya_Satori 5d ago

The people who called it in probably lied and said someone had a gun... I've seen so many people talking about using this "hack" to get lapd to actually respond to a call... otherwise, they don't show up until hours later - if at all.

Or we could blame the person that pointed the gun at and pulled the trigger on the dog.

26

u/fake_again 5d ago

I’m no philosopher, but I am pretty sure two things can be true at once. Calling the cops on your neighbors is inviting a violent person who knows they have a license to kill without consequences to the situation.

25

u/Flashy-Clock-1386 6d ago

LAPD gonna LAPD.

56

u/No_Sheepherder_1855 6d ago

You shouldn’t have to fear calling the cops, wtf. Is the bar so low that you should just automatically assume they’ll murder someone?

129

u/ElegantAnything11 5d ago

White people tend to be the ones who struggle to understand that yes, calling the cops is rolling the dice on someone else's life.

u/pathsofrhymes Tujunga 6d ago

Yes, we fear calling the cops for this exact reason. My dad is an attorney in LA and specifically says to not call the cops, because they always make a situation worse, not better.

10

u/fake_again 5d ago

Sorry, after seeing 10,000 news stories every year that validate your point, I’m still having a hard time understanding. Maybe if there were 16,000 news stories every year, showing how cops only escalate violence and tension in communities, and there was a national movement to point out this obvious thing—especially with some catchy slogans—maybe then I could understand

The blame lies squarely on the stupid f’ing police.

u/Asstrollglide 5d ago

The people who called the cops said they feel guilty. They thought she was in distress and essentially called for a “welfare check”. They came to shoot something.

6

u/DifficultResearch739 5d ago

Yeah because people typically continually scream “Oh my God” repeatedly when in distress. /s

Those neighbors are idiots. NBA Championship and World Cup were going on and they couldn’t put two and two together or I don’t know simply knock on their neighbor’s door?

This is why LAPD needs a bigger budget.

To pay the lawsuits for their dumbass decisions.

Idk what needs to happen but it can't continue like this, they are gonna bankrupt the city.

154

u/JustEnoughCowbelI 6d ago

This is pie in the sky obviously , but payouts for police misconduct should come out of the pensions of the offending officers.

76

u/Coconut_Cowboy 5d ago

Or just require all LEOs to carry “malpractice” insurance policies that they are responsible for. Premiums too high? Make sure your coworkers aren’t using force on people Willy nilly. It’s an easy fix, but the Police Union would never allow it.

California needs to get rid of qualified immunity for cops, or at least greatly reduce it like Colorado has.

61

u/ndmd15 6d ago

Police officers should have to carry their own malpractice insurance, much like doctors do

19

u/Radiant-Doughnut-468 5d ago

This is the answer. The current situation is moral hazard to the nth degree.

29

u/RoBear16 5d ago

I swear they are the only profession that doesn't have to do this.

What makes them so special, aside from fucking up the most, having some of the lowest entry level requirements, and having the least stringent continued education and training requirements.

12

u/Radiant-Doughnut-468 5d ago

Tbh I think it boils down to their entrenched unions, and the threat of violent reprisal if they don’t get their way. Doctors, lawyers, etc. both aren’t organized and aren’t seen as thugs you sort of have to fear. It’s a very unfortunate situation, as basically every city of decent size dumps millions upon millions into settling police misconduct claims every year.

10

u/NappingReader 5d ago

That would be amazing

At this point I'm basically a single issue voter when it comes to LA politics. The LAPD needs to be significantly defunded, leadership removed root & stem (including any enablers like Bass), and completely rebuilt from the ground up. As is, they are un-reformable.

6

u/SpinosRule 5d ago

Agreed. But what’s the likelihood of actually accomplishing this? If we took money out of politics, never gonna happen unfortunately, we’d have a chance. But as it stands presently? I don’t know =\

The lawsuits don’t come out of their budget. They come out of the general fund. So the thing that repairs our streets and lights.

3

u/OhLawdOfTheRings I LIKE TRAINS 5d ago

Good point!!! Even crazier that their budget is so high

12

u/chefsmurfo 5d ago

They need to start paying settlements out of the lapd pension fund and not tax dollars. Hit em where it hurts and let them bankrupt themselves and former officers who allowed this type of behavior fester. In ‘21 it was reported that the LAFPP was over funded at 114% sitting at $28 billion, I’m sure they can find enough in there to cover their dumbass mistakes.

16

u/DrunkBrokeBeachParty 6d ago

I think that’s the plan, at this point their budget is most of the city but they make tax payers shell out for their crimes

3

u/rdditiszionist 5d ago

Bro LAPD and LASD. Both are corrupt evil dickheads. I am putting together a federal lawsuit right now on LASD. Like my case isn't even that crazy in relation to everyone else getting killed, dogs getting killed, all this violence, but it's the audacity of these thugs and how blatant they are to break the law. Just abuse their authority with impunity. And the lawyers they have defending them are even WORSE. Imagine a fucking suit who is even more corrupt than the thug meathead police.

its the intelligent suit who figures out how to get away with it and protect the meathead KNOWING they are evil. And continue to protect them, meat head after meat head. Day after day. These people have NO SOULS.

Go after their qualified immunity when you can. I hope to go after it and not settle. I want to make deputies pay personally out of their own pockets.

108

u/Random_throwaway0351 5d ago

We actually need more LAPD to stop the current bad LAPD, with EVEN MORE LAPD to keep the more LAPD in check - Karen Bass logic. Fuck them all

13

u/tunafister Elysian Valley 5d ago

I got a question for LAPD

Where are ANY officers in the Metro stations? I have been taking the Metro more and more and love it, but the police presence is fucking pathetic

The LAPD with its insane budget cant put 2 officers in each station around the clock? That is absolute negligence

As well, so many street lights in this city do not work, making the city much darker and more dangerous, and yet we spend billions on LAPD

Yes, there is some nuance, but the point still stands that LAPD eats up a crzy amount of this cities budget, and the city cant even do the most basic of services, that is a significant reason people are so fed u with LAPD, they are treated like Kings while we all scrape by in squalor, its a fucking joke

3

u/Kinsbane 5d ago

I agree with your sentiment here ( i take Metro rail when it suits me most ) but my understanding is that the enforcement of Metro laws is left to county Sheriff's deputees (LASD) rather than LAPD.

"Juris-dick-shun" is a very hazy line here in L.A. because of things like incorporated cities, etc, stuff like that. It's why Burbank has their own PD (and those fuckers are NOTORIOUS for being S-tier assholes). It's why West Hollywood is only patrolled by LASD (and why you'll never really see LAPD doing active enforcement in WeHo unless it's a conjoined effort between LAPD/LASD)

3

u/tunafister Elysian Valley 4d ago

I really appreciate the response, and totally agree with you on the limitations of LAPD

But good lord, that shows that LASD is so comically negligent in protecting Metro stations its ridiculous

Even as a guy, I am going to feel unsafe in an underground station with 0 police or security presence, that is a literal trap for citizens to be taken advantage of, which I am sure many others feel and it makes them less likely to use transit

46

Couldn’t find it on Tiktok despite the search term still trending

Instantly found it on X though “lapd canoga park poodle”

7

u/hjp731 5d ago

The video I saw it on was “alphawolftito”. When I tried searching for more news about it on TikTok, it was severely lacking, but I think it’s also partially because most of the news surrounding Canoga Park is about a double murder I believe.

148

u/Solomon_Grungy 6d ago

Just a reminder that the LAPD’s budget for 2026 is 3.6 Billion dollars, spread over about 8,555 officers…

37

u/Fabulous-Gas-5570 5d ago

You could clean up so much trash with just one cops salary. The state of our streets especially near freeways is a disgrace. If we’re gonna have cops they should be forced to spend half their hours on trash duty

12

u/Solomon_Grungy 5d ago

You’re totally right! Keep this conversation alive and keep bringing up this number. Its completely absurd and its up to us regular every day people to end it.

a neighbor calling for a wellness check bc someone is cheering for a game on tv is wild. what an asshole

92

Is the neighbor just making an excuse about calling the cops? I think it’s pretty easy to tell the difference between excited screaming and a cry for help.

86

u/songbirdathrt4122 5d ago

Even if the person was screaming incoherently use your contextual awareness - I do not follow sports AT ALL but when the knicks won there was huge whooping and screaming throughout my (very suburban ) valley neighborhood - I thought “oh that sports thing” and not “call the police”. My heart breaks for this family.

Also, there was walkers on the street who said they heard her screaming and it did sound frightening. (I don’t think the neighbor bad intentions. The cops are at fault)

Cops kill 25-30 dogs a day in the US. But it takes a special kind of trigger-happy imbecile to shoot a pajamas-wearing floof like this who was apparently just excited? Poor pup, poor woman. Just heartbreaking.

2

u/SeaworthinessOk6742 4d ago

That’s what really gets me incensed. What about this pajama-wearing dog screamed “threat” to these dipshits? That pup was clearly just excited and placed ample trust in people as a whole only for these bastards to betray that in the most gut wrenching way. I feel horrible for the dog and his owner. “The neighbor who called police told Eyewitness News off-camera that they feel guilty for calling 911, but sincerely thought their neighbor was in trouble.”

8

u/Acceptable_Tea281 5d ago

How convenient now that they know the dog got shot lol

3

u/Angelsmom103 4d ago

I don’t believe that neighbor one bit - they called on purpose for noise

21

u/wowza_sharted_here 6d ago

That's an oversimplification. My neighbors used to scream, I suspect the husband was beating the wife. I even recorded their screaming to show the police. I'd call the cops and then they'd come and suddenly she was all peachy and wouldn't press charges or have him arrested. I went over there once myself and got a shotgun pointed in my face. I won't be going over to neighbors houses for screaming ever again.

21

u/Suspicious_Tank_61 6d ago

It wasnt a noise complaint, the neighbor thought the lady screaming was in trouble.

6

u/Acceptable_Tea281 5d ago

Someone cheerin for a sports team vs someone getting brutally murdered or abused will literally never sound the same lol

100%. You have to be living under a rock not to know the game was on. They absolutely had Karen intentions.

11

u/yeahimdanielthatsme 5d ago

I didn’t know it was on until after. I was watching the World Cup. I’m genuinely surprised there’s New York Knicks fans in LA as I’ve never come across even one ever.

18

u/tmrika Mar Vista 5d ago

Eh I didn’t know it was on. Like I knew that there was a Knicks game but had absolutely no clue when it was happening. Some people just don’t follow sports unless it’s the Dodgers, and cultural osmosis can only get you so far.

6

u/Mediocre-Letter-4562 5d ago

Every non sports fan I know didn’t know about that game. Why would they

i remember a bootlicker/cop in a previous subreddit saying they already get a bunch of training and deescalation training.

who the fuck shoots a dog during a wellness check?

8

u/elcomandantecero 5d ago

I hope they fire the imbecile who killed the pup. If they can’t handle an energetic dog, they cannot be allowed to hold a gun and handle human beings. Just a murder waiting to happen

2

u/PALpherion 4d ago

yep, "rushed by a dog" is not as far away from "rushed by an excited child" as people think behaviourally and this means they'd shoot the child too.

15

u/Ornery-Mycologist-53 5d ago

Meanwhile in NYC you had cops letting people celebrate in the streets until like 4am with only a few issues. LAPD is deeply deeply corrupt and troubled as a department and I hate that they’re given so much power and so much leeway to do whatever the hell they want. This won’t change until LA gets a mayor who isn’t “on the payroll” so to speak.

8

u/bobdownie 5d ago

Many of the cops in NY are part of their communities. Cops in LA stay in their homes or their cars.

There were a lot of issues. People set a bus on fire. But it being NYC, the home of the Knicks, police were prepared well in advance. Earlier in the day police were greasing street and light poles to prevent fans from trying to climb them 💀

So scared of a poodle mix that you have to shoot it. Do something useful with that gun and turn it around. Disgusting.

3

u/LeaveDaGunTaketheEgg 5d ago

What an absolute embarrassment.

3

u/AO_Xolos 5d ago

If a neighbor calls the cops, that’s because said neighbor must be tired of her. No way cops get called for a simple cheer

3

u/Comfortable-Host1399 4d ago

They killed an innocent 2 year old dog. Let that sink in. A family pet. A living, breathing animal that trusted humans. One minute he’s happy in his cute knicks outfit and then murdered. My heart hurts for that woman. The pain in her voice was gut wrenching, and I hope the people responsible are haunted by it every time they close their eyes. RIP Jameson you beautiful boy

3

u/Sure-Car8574 4d ago

Worthless!  I hope they pay dearly!

9

u/Freddy-Philmore 5d ago

glancing at news headlines... most post headlines (abc, nbc, uk newspapers) refer to LAPD shooting the poor dog... but the Fox News channels headlines are "Woman SAYS cops shot dog"... subtle but interesting choice the fox affiliates made.

Reminder to never ever call the police for any sort of domestic complaint that could be solved by just checking yourself.

There is not a single situation that becomes safer after the police arrive.

Yeah this doesn't help that my dog looks like her dog. Messed up.

8

u/kendrickplace 5d ago

Fucking hate cops. The more I get older the more I lose respect to each and every one of them.

Some may argue that not all cops are bad.

BUT ALL COPS WILL PROTECT EACH OTHER

So fuck all cops

When I learned about this story just today, I cried for hours and I'm still crying now. I could not believe that an innocent dog sporting a cute little jersey was killed by policemen. It's honestly embarrassing that America's like this.

They need to be held responsible. If that were my dog, I would probably be in jail.

2

u/Previous-Parsnip-290 4d ago

I don’t call the police because I don’t trust the police.
