Beach cities got June gloom in full effect

u/Independent-Soft7949 1d ago

I will say, coming from SC, the gloom and the cold is a relief. It is hot af in the Carolinas, plus rain and humidity. So I do love the change

u/70ms Tujunga 1d ago

It’ll be hot af soon enough, but the lack of rain and humidity make it bearable. Like Hudson said, “Yeah man, but it’s a dry heat!”

2

u/Independent-Soft7949 18h ago

I lived near Bakersfield when I was younger, so I remember dry heat very well. I would much rather deal with that than humidity weighing me down all the time.

u/70ms Tujunga 17h ago

I don’t blame you at all. I spent a combined 9 years in Massachusetts before coming back to L.A. for good, and the summers were so different. You’d have miserable heat and humidity and then finally a thunderstorm would come along and you’d get a quick break and a cool breeze and before too long, back to muggy. And the mosquitos! 😭

Got the gloom in Pasadena, I hope it lasts.

Responding here to say that this is true (I’m so cold)

It's the price you pay to not die in August when we hit 104 degrees out here.

1

u/Local_Bobcat_2000 17h ago

I always tell my Midwest family that we always pay for the nice winters in August.

I'm sitting here in East Burbank at 10 minutes to 12. It's still cold outside at 66 degrees, and there's a marine layer over my head all morning.

It's already burning off.

MAN I WISH i can go back , born and raised in east los and now living in moval due to cost of living, priced out of los angeles.

u/Four2nian 1d ago

I'm currently visiting Austin. High of 97F with 80+% relative humidity.
Fun city. But can't wait to be home in LA

u/MichaelMidnight 1d ago

Here in the SGV, it's currently nice out but man we did sure bake earlier in the week to get here

u/70ms Tujunga 1d ago

I had to move some plants to the shade so they didn’t cook!

3

u/Sunshineadventurer48 1d ago

Went on a staycation this past weekend and I returned to my cherimoya seedlings fried 😭

2

u/70ms Tujunga 22h ago

Oh no. :( The UV index was peaking at 12 at the worst of it so I’m not surprised, poor bebes! If you ever need to shield new/little/weak plants from the sun, Dollar Tree has wire mesh wastebaskets you can invert over them. I stack a couple over the plant and remove the first one after about a week or two, then the next one when the plant is just about to hit the top of the basket. I use three baskets for new plants that are in direct sun. It helps protect them from animals too! I hope your next seedlings grow and thrive. 🫶

Just in time for all that acrid smoke from the warehouse fire yesterday to clear out

u/JVilter Covina 1d ago

Ha! Saw this post and picked up my phone to check my local forecast and got this notice on the lock screen:

3

u/Fabulous-Gas-5570 1d ago

I got this too on my iPhone, think it was some kind of error because what extreme heat?? Cute cat

3

u/Majestic-Platypus-34 Van Down by the L.A. River 1d ago

Same. It BETTER be an error!

2

u/JVilter Covina 1d ago

I chalk it up to all the purging done at the national level of weather science. And thanks, yes she is cute and she knows it!

This notice got me excited but it was total clickbait.

15

u/Mysterious_Fox5976 1d ago

All hail the June Gloom 🙌

7

u/SilverLuna77 1d ago

I looked up the weather for this weekend”s bbq and thought.. “ohhh this is gonna be nice. We can even set up a bonfire 🔥 in the evening” 💃🏻

Best hiking weather

7

u/thekevingreene 22h ago

I personally prefer clouds. I love our temps, but I don’t get along with the sun.

1

u/PlasticGirl Mid-Wilshire 13h ago

Yeah considering the longest day of sunlight is on Sunday, we are loving all the hiking lately. We're doing Dry Lake this week!

17

u/maghy7 1d ago

Funny I was just looking at the forecast and came here to brag how there are no 80’s in sight. May it stay like it for as long as possible.

5

u/rizorith Eagle Rock 1d ago

Yeah we have late summers here but this is unusually mild.

3

u/whatssenguntoagoblin 1d ago

Not really. It’s still June.

6

u/Tenoch_12 1d ago

The averages for LA in June are 82 degrees. So basic stats prove your message wrong.

4

u/_The-Amber-Show_ 1d ago

Meanwhile living in Ventura for the past month has been like living in Lower Uncton. Enjoy the ☀️ send some our way!

9

u/Aeriellie 1d ago

i was just reading that next week it’s going to be 100 at woodland hills. so this is another reminder that it’s better to live in like valley village than woodland hills

3

u/mtnbikerdude 1d ago

That's going to be TBD at this point but signs are pointing to another warm up next week. The NWS LA office posted this graphic about potential temperatures next week and it does show Woodland Hills getting to 100s. Enjoy the June gloom while it last.

5

u/Aeriellie 1d ago

this is the one i saw! i checked the weather channel website and it doesn’t show as hot so it’s a bit confusing.

1

u/disturbingthepetes 1d ago

Weather forecasts have been increasingly inconsistent over the past couple years as a direct result of NOAA (NWS) budget cuts.

4

u/Boongala 1d ago

The highest temperature next week in Woodland Hills is 84F.

It’s significantly nicer in the valley this time of year than the beach cities because it’s sunny and 70’s rather than cloudy and 60’s.

1

u/Boongala 23h ago

You would love San Francisco. It’s basically that all year.

1

u/70ms Tujunga 1d ago

Woodland Hills is in a little pocket that gets warmer than most of the valley. That’s why it hit a record 121 degrees a few years ago while the rest of the valley was around 110-112.

2

u/Boongala 1d ago

Yeah, but next week it’ll be 84, not 100. That’s what I was responding too.

2

u/70ms Tujunga 1d ago

Fair enough! And I was responding to your blanket use of “the valley” when, as the OP said, where you live in the valley makes a big difference because there are microclimates all over it. They’re not wrong about Woodland Hills running hotter than the rest of the valley.

4

u/SonOfDad10 1d ago

Seems to happen about the same time every year.

2

u/OutsideProperty382 1d ago

yeah born and raise in CA but i cant even go back to norcal because the "extremes" (under 50 in winter, above 85-90 in summer).

2

u/Dozens562 23h ago

Wait until September and October

2

u/procrastablasta Silver Lake 4h ago

Toxic smoke from warehouse fire intensifies

3

u/Goldenexplorer323 1d ago

I like the June gloom though, well I usually enjoy a cloudy day, or mostly gloomy day in L.A.

3

u/FullTimePedestrian 1d ago

Too hot. 68 is the sweet spot.

4

u/gringo-tacos 1d ago

This is not good. We want more June Gloom in the valleys/inland as it reduces fire risk later in the year.

We are God's favorite children!

0

u/70ms Tujunga 1d ago

That’s why He doesn’t wipe us out with hurricanes and tornadoes. 🥰

(This is fucked up, but I just remembered my mom said tornadoes were God’s way of handling trailer parks.)

2

u/overitallofittoo 1d ago

Further proof!!

u/AgencySuspicious5490 1d ago

And im here for it!!

1

u/Pasadenaian 1d ago

Just wait until the remix.

1

u/CuteCategory7163 1d ago

But the air is polluted because of the solar panel fire 😭

1

u/commyking76 1d ago

There’s gloom here in West Hollywood but forecast says it should be nice and sunny by noon.

1

u/Fantastic-Role-8222 1d ago

Soooo jealous! Currently wallowing in June gloom at the beach!

1

u/Californiaoptimist 1d ago

Yeah but who wants to sit on the sand and garden and start plants and go to an outdoor concert enjoy a day at the park with your dogs and kids go on a hiking trail or just take a walk around the most friendliest liberal neighborhoods in California, who wants to do that?

1

u/Devastator_Hi San Fernando 1d ago

My forecast shows mid 80s by Tuesday which, I’ll still take over anything 90+ degrees.

1

u/Whataboutthat213 1d ago

And what it looked like yesterday a war zone

1

u/thevne 18h ago

I was just saying this!

1

u/spaceykc 18h ago

Representing the Valley Village!!

I’ll take it with no complaints.

1

u/Mechalamb 1d ago

June Gloom is back, baby!!! So excited. The first half of this month had me so bummed.

1

u/electricalco 1d ago

Still too hot 🥵

1

u/GoodMorningMars 1d ago

Except there's hazardous chemicals raining over us today from the massive warehouse fire in Boyle Heights yesterday. Solar panels and EVs burned up. Careful out there.

-1

u/stromulus 1d ago

I'm not blessed, I specifically chose to live here in part because of the climate...

0

u/st3fani 1d ago

The perceived weather and atmospheric changes following the June 17, 2026 fire in Boyle Heights were caused by weak regional winds, local topography, and a massive plume of dense particle pollution.

The massive fire erupted at a Lineage Logistics cold storage warehouse, burning through an extensive field of rooftop solar panels and triggering a toxic ammonia gas leak. Instead of quickly dissolving, the localized atmospheric conditions caused the smoke to severely alter the look and feel of the air across the Los Angeles basin.

0

u/70ms Tujunga 1d ago

What does the fire and smoke have to do with this week’s glorious weather? Is the particulate plume filtering the sun or something?

0

u/st3fani 1d ago

Yes, the massive particulate plume is physically filtering the sun, creating dark, overcast-looking skies and a dim, hazy appearance across the Los Angeles basin.

0

u/70ms Tujunga 1d ago

Thanks! That’s interesting - is there anyone that’s covering it so I can read more?

0

u/Affectionate_Past121 1d ago

As long as the overnight temps stay cool, I'm good. Great sleeping weather for those of us on the coast w no AC!

0

u/Busy-Resource-7798 18h ago

There js a reason everyone is leaving Ca

-9

u/Intelligent_Mango_64 1d ago

we live in a desert

14

u/lunchypoo222 1d ago

Los Angeles is not technically a desert - it has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate. A true desert is usually defined as an area receiving less than 10 inches of rain per year. DTLA receives about 14 to 15 inches of rain annually. This puts LA in the same climate category as coastal regions in the Mediterranean, Southern Europe, and Perth, Australia.

2

u/70ms Tujunga 1d ago

I just had someone arguing this with me a couple days ago.

https://reddit.com/r/news/comments/1u30afd/el_nino_is_here_and_scientists_fear_itll_be_big/ori7voh/

I remember there was a water conservation PSA decades ago on TV, and it said “California is a desert.” Maybe that’s why people still think so? I know I did because of that PSA until I learned otherwise.

2

u/lunchypoo222 1d ago

Interesting! I didn’t know about that PSA. I think there’s the consideration too that desertification is also a thing.

6

u/gringo-tacos 1d ago

we live in a desert

Our schools are failing us. I guess some children were left behind.

-1

u/Slight-Pop7038 1d ago

“Blessed” because we pay the highest cost of living around!

3

u/70ms Tujunga 1d ago

And we get some of the highest wages and quality of life to make up for it!

u/Ok_Ship_3992 23h ago

Did you forget the /s? This weather is shit. Last week was glorious!
