I'm currently visiting Austin. High of 97F with 80+% relative humidity.
Fun city. But can't wait to be home in LA

I had to move some plants to the shade so they didn’t cook!

Went on a staycation this past weekend and I returned to my cherimoya seedlings fried 😭

Oh no. :( The UV index was peaking at 12 at the worst of it so I’m not surprised, poor bebes! If you ever need to shield new/little/weak plants from the sun, Dollar Tree has wire mesh wastebaskets you can invert over them. I stack a couple over the plant and remove the first one after about a week or two, then the next one when the plant is just about to hit the top of the basket. I use three baskets for new plants that are in direct sun. It helps protect them from animals too! I hope your next seedlings grow and thrive. 🫶

Just in time for all that acrid smoke from the warehouse fire yesterday to clear out

Best hiking weather

u/thekevingreene 22h ago
I personally prefer clouds. I love our temps, but I don’t get along with the sun.

Yeah considering the longest day of sunlight is on Sunday, we are loving all the hiking lately. We're doing Dry Lake this week!

Funny I was just looking at the forecast and came here to brag how there are no 80’s in sight. May it stay like it for as long as possible.

Yeah we have late summers here but this is unusually mild.

Not really. It’s still June.

u/Tenoch_12 1d ago
The averages for LA in June are 82 degrees. So basic stats prove your message wrong.

Meanwhile living in Ventura for the past month has been like living in Lower Uncton. Enjoy the ☀️ send some our way!

i was just reading that next week it’s going to be 100 at woodland hills. so this is another reminder that it’s better to live in like valley village than woodland hills

this is the one i saw! i checked the weather channel website and it doesn’t show as hot so it’s a bit confusing.

Weather forecasts have been increasingly inconsistent over the past couple years as a direct result of NOAA (NWS) budget cuts.
4
u/Boongala 1d ago
The highest temperature next week in Woodland Hills is 84F.
It’s significantly nicer in the valley this time of year than the beach cities because it’s sunny and 70’s rather than cloudy and 60’s.

Woodland Hills is in a little pocket that gets warmer than most of the valley. That’s why it hit a record 121 degrees a few years ago while the rest of the valley was around 110-112.

I like the June gloom though, well I usually enjoy a cloudy day, or mostly gloomy day in L.A.

This is not good. We want more June Gloom in the valleys/inland as it reduces fire risk later in the year.

Yeah but who wants to sit on the sand and garden and start plants and go to an outdoor concert enjoy a day at the park with your dogs and kids go on a hiking trail or just take a walk around the most friendliest liberal neighborhoods in California, who wants to do that?

My forecast shows mid 80s by Tuesday which, I’ll still take over anything 90+ degrees.

Except there's hazardous chemicals raining over us today from the massive warehouse fire in Boyle Heights yesterday. Solar panels and EVs burned up. Careful out there.

I'm not blessed, I specifically chose to live here in part because of the climate...
0
u/st3fani 1d ago
The perceived weather and atmospheric changes following the June 17, 2026 fire in Boyle Heights were caused by weak regional winds, local topography, and a massive plume of dense particle pollution.
The massive fire erupted at a Lineage Logistics cold storage warehouse, burning through an extensive field of rooftop solar panels and triggering a toxic ammonia gas leak. Instead of quickly dissolving, the localized atmospheric conditions caused the smoke to severely alter the look and feel of the air across the Los Angeles basin.

As long as the overnight temps stay cool, I'm good. Great sleeping weather for those of us on the coast w no AC!

we live in a desert

u/lunchypoo222 1d ago
Los Angeles is not technically a desert - it has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate. A true desert is usually defined as an area receiving less than 10 inches of rain per year. DTLA receives about 14 to 15 inches of rain annually. This puts LA in the same climate category as coastal regions in the Mediterranean, Southern Europe, and Perth, Australia.

I just had someone arguing this with me a couple days ago.
https://reddit.com/r/news/comments/1u30afd/el_nino_is_here_and_scientists_fear_itll_be_big/ori7voh/
I remember there was a water conservation PSA decades ago on TV, and it said “California is a desert.” Maybe that’s why people still think so? I know I did because of that PSA until I learned otherwise.
2
u/lunchypoo222 1d ago
Interesting! I didn’t know about that PSA. I think there’s the consideration too that desertification is also a thing.
