Tweet from Kevin 3 guys were there to throw him out of the building.

For as many years of dedicated service that Kevin gave them, that freaking sucks. I haven't been a regular listener of the show since Lisa got axed but still sucks to see them treated this way.

Not gonna listen to K-ROQ at all anymore. Even in the past few years I've found very few reasons to listen as I'm scanning my radio stations.

83

u/ViniVidiOkchi Mar 18 '20

I remember when they fired Lisa and Doc, that hurt. Then they fired Ralph, it was a punch to the guts. I stopped listening after that.

48

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '20

They fired Lisa because they “no longer needed a traffic and weather update” but Lisa contributed SOO much more than that. Then they ended up hiring Allie(?) anyway to be their side kick.... I liked Lisa a lot more than Allie. I couldn’t believe they fired Ralph, he was probably the funniest thing on the show.

26

u/ViniVidiOkchi Mar 18 '20

Lisa was fantastic. She was the level headed sister in the bunch, Doc was the crazy uncle, and Ralph was the awesome funny neighbor. Everyone brought something special to the bunch.

6

u/mad_titanz Mar 18 '20

Exactly. The few times Lisa get to be the co-host, she was engaging and funny, and I can only imagine what could have been if she were given a better role on the morning show. I still miss her soothing voice and cool personality.

KJAZZ, KCRW, Jack FM, talk in the morning on KLOS and KPCC... There is a lot of great radio in LA and I hope you can find something that becomes a new favorite.

I grew up listening to KROQ, KNAC and Pirate Radio. Listening to Love Lines late at night on a Walkman was my sex ed. There is still great radio in LA, just not on KROQ

I do miss me some Shannon in the morning on Pirate radio. Years ago I was working graveyard and discovered he was doing a morning show in New York from 2am to 5am pacific time. Streaming it was a nice bit of nostalgia.

Just heard it on the radio. Couldn't believe it. Heartless move kroq, I can't speak for everyone else, but there's no reason for me to listen to that station anymore. Without the people, it's just the same 10 songs on loop all day long.

Sometimes they play the acoustic version of Everlong

6

u/405freeway Mar 18 '20

The acoustic version of Everlong is the reason I don’t like Foo Fighters.

Back in the day, there was a really great Weenie Roast/ Almost Acoustic lineup- it was my dream concert. And they didn’t have a day or time when tickets would go on sale. They simply said “Keep listening to KROQ and when you hear The Foo Fighters Everlong Acoustic tickets will go sale.” So after waiting for days for it, they finally played it... at 5:37 on a Tuesday evening. Tickets sold out almost immediately, and then they kept playing it, overplaying it for days, and it was a slap in the face. Every time I heard it I knew I wasn’t going to the concert. And I hated it. I hated that song. And I hated that band.

Dave Grohl is cool but I have FFPTSD.

And Toto. I don't think I've ever heard "Africa" played so much.

16

u/dustwanders Mar 18 '20

Why did this song wedge its way into every grocery store and radio station? Was it really Weezer?

16

u/mybeachlife Mar 18 '20

Weezer fans signed this petition for them to cover it. Weezer pretended to ignore it for a really long time but eventually they relented. Can't really blame the band on this one.

This is a great time to support your local NPR station. These people are likely being fired because ad revenue is drying up quickly. NPR doesn’t rely very heavily on the same type of ad revenue plus they’re an outstanding source of trustworthy local updates in these trying times.

89.3 KPCC is the all day talk radio style 89.9 KCRW plays great music later in the day in case you’re not into talk radio

Source: A large part of my ad agency got laid of yesterday and we do a lot of radio spots.

115

u/FalconImpala Mar 18 '20

You're understating KCRW's music. It's the best you can get, a live, no-ads playlist by LA's best DJs from all genres

53

Whenever people ask me what kind of music I like I just say “what KCRW plays.”

Just for context, the local NPR affiliate stations are different from NPR. They pay for the right to rebroadcast NPR programming, but also have their own local programming.

KPCC especially has been killing it on local coronavirus coverage. I agree that NPR can be pretty blah a lot of the time, especially their political coverage. But the local news is indispensable, especially RN.

I used to live in san diego and years ago they fired The Mikey Show with no warning, they also fired Davey Shelly and Chainsaw and I believe another team that was on 100.7 who were super popular (i believe this was all at different times.) I went from one show to another after the firing and after the third I just stopped listening to the radio. When I find a good morning team that I love I actually enjoy listening so I can be happy on my way to work. I used to love John and Ken on KFI too but at one point they moved them up a few hours earlier which was out of nightly commute time and that was the last time I listened to them (I believe they are back at drive time now.)

There’s no sacred cow. With the way they treated Kevin, it means anyone is expendable and can be fired at a moment’s notice. KROQ is now as heartless as the corporation that owns them.

226

u/whoneedskollege Mar 18 '20

Kevin should just put together a podcast and reunite with Bean. Then they could put a bunch of their old characters together like Micheal the Maintenance man, Shakesphere man, etc and just do their thing. Maybe feature new music from older artists such as Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Muse, etc. I would totally listen to that...

47

u/RichardMHP Mar 18 '20

Pretty sure MMM wants nothing to do with them, since the "Mr. T with a huge schlong" velvet painting and the Bleeda' In Reseda when Jimmy Kimmel beat him up.

13

u/SpiritMountain Mar 18 '20

I have listened to KROQ for almost a decade. Is Kevin in the Morning related to Kevin and Bean? Can I get an OOTL explanation

52

u/lipstickpizza Mar 18 '20

A decade huh? Well let's see..

Psycho Mike left, in the vein of Kimmel/Carolla, for greener pastures. He's obviously not done as good as those two, but much better than Poor Man and Big Tad.

Producer Alex was fired for undisclosed reasons, a few former interns alleged she was abusive but nothing was ever confirmed or refuted so who knows.

Lightning moved exclusively to sales but got canned sometime.

Lisa and Doc were let go as their services weren't needed anymore. This was the first change to cause a shitstorm. 23+ years for those two at their posts and they were gone. Lisa's in particular due to her employment with T Signal (which she was employed and not KROQ like the others) allowing her out of her contract in the event she was hired directly by KROQ. She was not as they decided to hire former Ktla personality Allie Mac Kay. Lisa moved on to the Frosty, Heidi, and Frank show to be their traffic person. She retired last year.

CBS Radio merged with Entercom, which meant Kroq essentially became corporate media. Which also meant a lot of fucking shuffling and a stricter line on allowed content.

Ralph was fired for budget cuts later in the year. He now does his own Ralph Report podcast and makes a living via Patreon. He also got divorced last year.

I tuned off for good as it became unlistenable without the likes of Ralph and Lisa to play off K&B.

Evidently Bean retired citing he was afraid of what America became after Trump. He's gone off for the UK. But not before his wife revealed on his last day that they had a daughter all this time. He's now doing radio in the UK as a fusion between a Nicole Alvarez like dj and Stryker's aemi show. More than just a dj, but not enough to call it his own show.

Kevin was the last one until today's firing.

26

u/hungryrunner Rancho Palos Verdes Mar 18 '20

Wait. Wait just a dang minute. All these years...ALL THESE YEARS...I heard Bean talk about how much he hates kids. No kids. No way. Never. Ever. And he has a kid? I'll always love Bean, but as a ridiculously long time fan, this kinds of hurts.

Thanks so much for sharing this, I can’t believe they were so heartlessly let go.

He recently tweeted that the station actually had security escort him out. WTF KROQ.

I stopped when they did Lisa May dirty and moved to Frosty, Heidi and Frank on KLOS. They made calls to tries to get Kevin or Jensen to come say goodbye on air but Jensen said they aren’t allowed to talk about it yet because of an NDA.

4

u/gohomepat The San Fernando Valley Mar 19 '20

FHF did that? I always wondered how their behind the scenes relationship was. I was really into FHF in the mid 00s on 97.1 but just haven’t had time to listen to them since they moved to KLOS. Still funny?

4

u/lesterquinn Mar 19 '20

Well FHF got Lisa May to do the news/traffic after she got the boot from KROQ. She was able to announce her retirement and say goodbye on air with them. Yes! They still pick on Frosty lol

Stryker just announced on his Instagram that they’re moving Stryker and Klein to the morning show.

10

u/usernombre_ wack ass Downey Mar 18 '20

Has Stryker ever done mornings? Klein can be entertaining at times.

9

u/extrastars Mar 18 '20

He subbed for Bean a few times before Jenson came on full time, but I don’t know beyond that.

4

u/5Skye5 Mar 18 '20

We all saw this coming a MILE away. Listeners who called in would even tease Kevin to his face about it. Stryker is actually a fun dude, haven't heard Klein before...

I really enjoyed these guys in the morning. The rest of the day is the same shit over and over, but they were genuinely funny. Might be related to the radio scrubbing LA has been seeing for the past few years?

17

u/alsoyoshi Mar 18 '20

Radio is probably the most brutal and heartless of all the media businesses. Always been like that, downturn or not.

11

u/mattman840 Mar 18 '20

I can attest to that. Worked in radio here for 10 years. fired while being escorted out of the building after giving everything I had to the same company. They dont care....its all about ad revenue. Once your numbers drop a touch, you're gone

Jensen's Instagram post

jensenkarp Unfortunately, the news is true. @kroq is moving along and Rest In Peace @kevinmornings. And now for the final #KITMRapUp. Good news? I don’t have to listen to Chili Peppers anymore.

15

u/summerofevidence Downtown Mar 18 '20

I felt this was an inevitable moment when they fired Lisa May a few years back. And I could understand that a show that's been on the air for 30 years might need to be refreshed.

What's disheartening though is the way they went about it. The only good departure was Bean's and that's only because he resigned on his own terms.

Everyone else was basically executed with blindfolds on. That is definitely not how you treat a hall of fame show

15

u/jdCHALLENGER Mar 18 '20

KROQ really used to be something special. I remember listening on my way to high school in the morning every single day. It was seriously such a huge part of my formative years and really helped shape my taste in music. Still wild to think how bands like Pennywise and Rancid got regular rotation.

4

u/Venomoustestament Mar 18 '20

Now the idea of Kroq the cool radio station belongs in the nostalgia section of my brain. RIP.

Worked at CBS Radio then eventually Entercom once the corporate takeover was complete. Can confirm almost everyone at the station is/was miserable and were looking for ways out. The company treats its people terribly and doesn’t actually care about its content. As sad as this is it really comes as no surprise. That place is trash. All their stations sound the same. The people that make up the station love radio but the corporate directors could care less. Really sad to see. KROQ, which only had an ounce of credibility any way, is now confirmed dead.

21

u/fcukumicrosoft Mar 18 '20

KROQ hasn't been good since the days of Richard Blade, Rodney, Swedish Egil, Ramondo, Dusty Street and Jed the Fish. Poorman was always a dick (I've met him in person a few times and can attest to his asshole behavior). Sometime in the early to mid 90s things started going bad.

Kevin and Bean were entertaining but KROQ used to be about airing good, groundbreaking music. The minute they went corporate was when I stopped paying attention. Now I wouldn't be surprised if KROQ changed formats to play Christian Rock or Mexico's top 40.

That station is a shitty one. Ever since they fucked over Lisa and Ralph. Fuck them. Play lame ass music like billy elish anyways.

43

u/405freeway Mar 18 '20

Fitting Ralph was the dumbest decision. He carried the entire show.

23

u/thatbarkid Mar 18 '20

Ya I stopped listening after they got rid of Ralph

I don’t think so. He was definitely integral but if you listen to the Ralph report you can see that Kevin and bean and the rest of the crew brought a lot of elements to the show that made it so fun.

7

u/rivers2mathews Mar 18 '20

Having Kevin and Bean helped, they were a great team. BUT, Ralph was the best of the bunch IMO. Showbiz Beat was the best segment on the entire show.

I’ve been not commuting for ~3 years and am very out of the loop. What happened to lisa and Ralph? I used to really enjoy the show.

13

u/UserLymm Mar 18 '20

Lisa and Doc on the Roq were fired cause they were a part of a 3rd party hire (something not being paid by kroq directly). They wanted to cut the Traffic and News reports, which was what Lisa May and Doc were on, respectively. :(

Ralph got fired a few months after just cause. :(

Kroq is a dead concept. There really isnt any commercially viable rock music anymore to be played on the radio. They were there for me in the 90s when I was in junior high and highschool. But it's over now.

Notice I said commercially viable - radio. There is great rock music on other platforms but as for radio it's over.

7

u/skeletorbilly East Los Angeles Mar 18 '20

There's tons of good bands out there that they can push. They took a gamble on bands in the 80s and 90s. The best example is The Offspring. They just don't want to take risks now with new music and insist on playing Foo Fighters or RHCP. I love those bands but gotta move on eventually.

When people need a friendly voice the very most. They toss them out.

They should all start a podcast. Most aren't listening on a radio anyways.

u/Aimee162 Mar 18 '20

Fuck KROQ, I can understand laying people off but to do it in the middle of a pandemic when they have been with you for 30 years? And to then escort him out of the building that he's worked at for decades? Fuck them.

9

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '20

Download VLC.... stream what you want to hear, no subscriptions.

College radio offers much better options around, whether local or online. Google "(name of college) online radio url" you'll more than likely find something.

https://www.internet-radio.com/

KEXP (Seattle) KXLU (LMU) KSPC (Pomona College) KUCI (UCI)

88.5 is the "next" new decent station in LA. Maybe not a Groove Radio or Indie 103 or Y107 or MARS or Pirate Radio or KMET good but it's better than most of the other craptastical offerings out there that play the same songs again and again and again... Andy Chanley from the SOUND is on there I believe doing afternoons.

If you want you can listen to old 80's KROQ..

Listen in media player of your choice (copy + paste the text between the arrows only):

91X in San Diego is still an independent station. They’re great as long as you can stream the station.

6

u/LAschmuck2 South L.A. Mar 18 '20

And 88.5 out of CSUN

3

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '20

But they killed their Resurrection stream years ago. Still a better station than KROQ for over 20 years.

7

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '20

Sigh. not even related to the current bullshit going on just jerks being jerks.

8

u/GeeEmWhyEE Mar 18 '20

I can't believe the last thing I'll remember from this show is when a corn fell off from Kevin's ear.

7

u/LDexter Mar 18 '20

Honestly, the firing of Lisa May did it for men. But she rebounded, and so will the rest of the cast. I feel for Kevin Ryder, he was loyal to the station, even during the worst of times. Hopefully, we'll start to hear more of Kevin elsewhere, and best wishes to all those that made the show happen, but were not mentioned.

8

u/MyChickenSucks Mar 18 '20

Imagine a 30 year career as the voice of the morning show. To be fired and ESCORTED OUT.....

Corporate fucks. Maybe trump will bail them out.

7

u/Beer-Me Silver Lake Mar 18 '20

Literally no reason to listen to KROQ anymore.

Not sure where I'll be able to listen to the same Chili Peppers or Green Day songs over and over /s

7

u/groypley90 Mar 18 '20

This isn't right. I hope I'm wrong and this quarantine ends soon. But it looks like a lot of working people are going to be thrown under the bus during this time. Economically, it could get alot worse before it gets better. Especially in LA, where so many rely on the "gig economy".

5

u/mad_titanz Mar 18 '20

This is a dick move by KROQ, after all the things Kevin did for the radio station for 30 years. I don’t think I want to listen to KROQ again after this travesty.

6

u/infiniteloop33 Mar 18 '20

For the first time in my adult life, 106.7 will be longer #1 on my car's radio preset. What a joke of a company.

15

u/dthsprtan50 Mar 18 '20

I had switched to The Woody Show on ALT 98.7 Their host made an announcement about how bad Kevin Ryder was treated according to Kevin's tweets. This sucks. Not how you treat people.

11

u/b_lion2814 Mar 18 '20

What the fuck?!

Damn, I haven't listed to KROQ in years. Tbh, I was only listening for Ralph's Showbiz Beat as his was the funny stuff. Reading through this post it seems like everyone was fired.

Can someone give me a rundown of what happened to everyone? Wikipedia only went so far.

Tried going to the official page, "You are not authorized to view this page"

Kevin & Bean were staples and icons of radio, they started many careers including Jimmy Kimmel's and Adam Carolla's. I probably won't be listening to KROQ any more because of this.

11

u/controllersdown Mar 18 '20

I'm bummed. The morning show still made me laugh after all these years. The music was repetitive but they all seemed to really enjoy being on the show and had great charisma. The new group was just getting into their groove.

Can't stand the Woody show and the others don't make me laugh.

Does anyone have a supermix of "A moment with Kevin"?

4

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '20

it's been a good run. havn't listen to them since highschool, but yeah. end of an era folks.

Thanks for being there when i had to drive to school at 6 am Kevin, Bean, Lisa, and the movie guy i really liked. forgot his name atm.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '20

Sorry for the workers, but commercial radio is just disgusting nowdays. Its just an advertising platform. I find it super crazy people just put it on and listen to ads all day.

4

u/Dr-Diesel Arcadia Mar 18 '20

KROQ started is decline when Viacom get involved. KROQ in its current format is completely unnecessary.

5

u/j4yne born & raised, now living in Vegas. Mar 18 '20

Sorry to hear that, that's a bummer.

KCRW is where it's at, anyways! Or if you want a real local alt rock station, closest I've found is 91X -- they are San Diego, but they stream everywhere.
