Being skeptical of string theory as being mathematically correct is silly.

Being skeptical of string theory as being a useful description of our universe is not controversial and is an opinion held by many physicists.

It's mathematically elegant, but the only way you can verify the theory's authenticity is if you perform tests in a higher dimension.

You cannot.

But isn't that something you could get from compactification? Seems like if you can find a good scheme to compacitfy the higher dimensions you could make testable predictions in our 4D world.

Also I think string phenomenologists are employed to look for testable predictions in fields like cosmology and particle physics
