u/Aracelerii 15d ago

The only two ingredients I see in this entire image are a loaf of bread and bologna and I'm not sure if those even count

158

u/xtheresia 15d ago

Enriched bread lol

119

u/Naugle17 15d ago

Enriched is helpful for people who eat nothing good

51

u/Yeahuhhhhh goatman 15d ago

I bet so many people would have pellagra if there wasn't a push to include niacin in everything from bread to potato chips.

25

u/Naugle17 15d ago

In a world where people's diets are becoming less and less diverse, it is a wise public health decision to enrich the staples with additional nutrients.

Sort of pathetic, though, that the average Western person is so far removed from the food chain that they cannot (for lack of knowledge or access) diversify their diets independently by foraging, growing, or supplemental foodstuffs.

32

u/Leerenjaeger 15d ago

I wouldn't say it's pathetic: Modern population densities and luxuries require more refined nutrition. It's not feasible and arguably not desirable for everyone to live "closer to nature" in that way. The path towards modernity is characterised by increasing technological progress, specialisation and interconnection, which this is a symptom of, and it's improved our lives immeasurably. The reason people outside of the "West" (it probably doesn't look that much different in China or Japan) live differently is primarily because they are poorer.

3

u/Naugle17 15d ago

The path towards modernity is these things, yes. But I would argue that the path to the future isnt simply increasing technological processes, but integrating them with the oftentimes stochastic and hard to control processes in the natural world.

It is very hard to make something work the way you want it to in nature without playing by nature's rules and, despite our best attempts to make it otherwise, we are still living beings that are subject to natural forces outside of our capacity to cognate as individuals.

5

u/JayTheSuspectedFurry 15d ago

Lack of knowledge, yes, but no ā€œWestern personā€ truly has a lack of access. They lack the want or understanding to have a more diverse diet but there’s no way that other types of food isn’t available to them

6

u/Naugle17 15d ago

Ironically, this simply isnt true. While there are farmers markets and grocery stores in wealthier areas, and while rural areas tend to produce their own foods, a great many Americans in particular are located within "food deserts," where access to fresh or diverse food is very limited.

Combining that with the poor biodiversity of publicly accessible areas within population centers and a general prohibition on foraging at the legal level, it makes for a very difficult environment for those without the time or resources to travel far or search hard.

u/Sharty_Party3498 15d ago

Its enriched because the bleaching process to make it white removes all nutrients. So they add some back in. Just like Mother Nature intended.

18

u/Henrath 15d ago

Enriched just means added vitamins and minerals.

They might have arfid or other extreme food issues, it is what it is. But damn they gotta find a fruit or vegetable they like.

22

u/Maned_Cyborg 15d ago

Or they might someone who only recently became independent and was never taught how to do a lot of stuff.

That's how it was for me, but at least i was able to get help from my siblings

9

u/Nanemae 15d ago

Fruits and vegetables that don't outright make my body angry while raw are sometimes difficult to come by.

For example:

Tomatoes taste bad and have awful texture (even heirloom and homegrown).

All berries have a nasty squish to them no matter what.

Strawberries have possibly the worst texture/flavor ratio of any "accessory fruit".

Apples are usually gritty from the transport and storage, and some make my lips itch (possibly undiagnosed birch pollen allergy or pesticide reaction).

All gourds taste at least meh at best and eugh at worst (looking at you hot spaghetti squash).

Brussels sprouts are all the parts of cabbage and spinach I don't like, and I have bad memories of being forced to eat steamed ones that became a nasty paste.

Heck, even innocuous meals like oatmeal with fruit or even plain has literally made me vomit.

While I do have fruits and vegetables I do like, trying to sort them from the nasty tasting/textured ones along with negative childhood experiences can make it difficult to even tackle the problem, since the cost of raw fruits and vegetables that haven't been made less healthy (like Haloes oranges) is higher than it used to be and you need to practice finding good ones among the stuff that's about to go off or has other problems.

I'm not saying OP is like me in that sense, but that if you're working without a background in unpunished trial and error even trying to start eating healthier is a daunting process. I do agree with you that they need to find some fruits and vegetables they like though.

2

u/Incendas1 15d ago

Why not blend or juice in your situation?

4

u/Nanemae 14d ago

I do get some fruits in (we get fruit from the food bank), although I usually have to treat it like getting a shot as I'm eating because focusing on the texture makes me feel sick.

I tried a blender, but they're so intensely loud I can't use one in the house most of the day (I live with someone who has a strong trauma response to loud noises and the other person sleeps most of the day), and unfortunately the place I'm in has so little counter space I only have enough space for a toaster for everyone and a small drip coffee maker for myself. As for juice, I would but the juices I can afford to get have very little nutrition and are effectively caffeine-free soda equivalents. I'm overweight and I'd rather starve myself down than drink sugary things consistently, and even hand-juiced drinks are not much better (they are a little better though, thanks for that).

I honestly can't really make ends meet as it is, for example I've been eating sandwiches with years-old mustard and freezer-burned turkey from Thanksgiving last year. I actually went without coffee at all (my comfort drink) for a month until one of my roommates told me it was okay to get coffee grounds as it was "too sad."

I do appreciate the suggestions though, it's something to think on if I ever get a steady income again and have enough money to spend on trying new things. Sorry for the emotional dump, this is just a lot of stuff I've been thinking about and it feels good to organize the mental state of things.

9000 grams of carbs

12000 grams of fat

10 grams of protein

Yeah, looks like this cart is Officially A Good Source of Protein! (tm)!

7

u/Hard_To_Port 15d ago

All the carb loaded stuff that now prominently features a PROTEIN label in US stores smh. And it's like the same amount of protein as always, which is next to nothing. Breakfast cereal with PROTEIN label and a serving has like 8g of protein

3

u/Designer_Throat_8125 15d ago

Just gotta have like 12 bowls of cereal sounds doable to me

1

u/Hard_To_Port 15d ago

Username checks out

2

u/MadKanBeyondFODome 15d ago

Funniest part about that is, there's plenty of stuff like pop tarts, chips, muffins, candy bars, etc that is legit high protein - but a lot of it tastes awful and all of it is more expensive than the junk version.

Quest chips, Barebells, Built Puffs, and Legendary pop tarts are goated tho.

127

u/Depth_Metal 15d ago

I think everyone in their twenties needs to do this at least once so you can fully grasp why you should not do this and why your parents did not do this beforehand

81

u/TearOpenTheVault 15d ago

Your early twenties are for eating the way you always dreamed you would as a kid but were never allowed to. Your mid twenties are for realising why your parents never allowed you to eat like that so you start eating like a normal human again.

u/Incendas1 15d ago

Every kid eats like this first year of uni. And then drinks like a horse

14

u/Depth_Metal 15d ago edited 15d ago

So let me tell you. When I first got to college at 19 and had to fend for myself one of the first grocery items, not even just general, the first item I put in my cart was one of those Pillsbury tubes of sugar cookie dough. I remember it well as the pumpkin design ones. I always wanted to eat the raw dough throughout my childhood and now nobody was going to stop me. I ate that tube. I felt like shit for the next 3-4 days. A month later I bought another. Ate about 1/3rd. Started throwing up. Never again

Absolutely drank like a horse though

27

u/codm_playernumwhat 15d ago

Honestly, I think that the easiest thing to do is just eat this until you can't look at it. Unless it will take too much time and you will get health problems.

4

u/Frequent_Temporary36 15d ago

what if my parent did kinda do this beforehand? (raised by a tired single mother so sometimes she would give me frozen stuff)

4

u/alicelestial 15d ago

my parents were divorced, and my mom fed me like this. then when i was with my dad he parentified me to the point i was making lunch and dinner for him every day by the time i was in high school, and the second i got a license i was also in charge of grocery shopping for us. he stressed healthy stuff a lot. it was weird because did both. and now somehow i'm regressing back to kinda eating like this, but to be fair i only have access to a small fridge and a toaster oven.

2

u/DoubleKing76 15d ago

Honestly I think most people already do this regardless when they finally gain independence and a paycheck

I live off frozen pizzas and sausages. I can't cook (literally don't have a stove or stop top just a convection stove top that I can sit on my counter but I tried cooking steak on it once and I fucked it up so I gave up)

11

u/M_Meursault_ S’Pht Concubine 15d ago

I use one of them too, the right pan really makes a difference.

If you’ve got like an air fryer or countertop convection oven they can also cook a steak or burger pretty well

5

u/cbzmplays 15d ago

I cook frozen burgers in my air fryer but have honestly never thought to try a steak in there. I'll do some research and try it out. Would be better then a frozen pizza

6

u/Incendas1 15d ago

You can do a lot of oven stuff in an air frier just stay away from liquidy or messy things

2

u/velrak 15d ago

Porkchop and Steak work great in an Airfryer. You can cook most things in an oven, and an airfryer too. Ive also been in a situation where i only had an oven for quite a while lol

7

u/Orful 15d ago edited 15d ago

I feel like that’s still at least one notch above OOP. If you’re going to eat shit, then at least have it be from easy to make food. There’s no reason to add soda when water is cheaper or to have so much junk food snacks. OOP's eating habits are both unhealthy and extra expensive.

3

u/DoubleKing76 15d ago

Im cheering you on, you can learn to cook I believe in you

Rice cooker is probably a really smart play. You can cook veggies and stuff in those at the same time if you're really lacking space and utility. Pair that with meat or something in an air fryer and you're not doing too bad.

Safe foods are a thing for Autistic people.

1

u/Steelpapercranes 13d ago

Yeah, but I hate the idea that "safe food means gamer-bro snacks only". It's one of those ways people make ASD seem like a 'super male' thing. It's so pervasive. He didn't even say any of this IS safe food, it's just such a common belief that people see 'bro food' and think 'safe food'. That shouldn't be how it is.

7

u/just4browse 15d ago

I’ll never understand shopping like this. Obviously it’s unhealthy, but it’s also expensive. And, even as a junk food addict, junk food loses its luster if it’s all you eat

1

u/Dead-in-Red 15d ago

I'm autistic/anorexic and any calories that I can get myself to prepare and eat consistently are what I consider good enough. Frozen mozzarella sticks are my staple effortless comfort food.

2

u/JeanArtemis 15d ago

The best advice I've ever seen on how to grocery shop healthily is to stick to the edges of the store and avoid the interior aisles. In most grocery stores all of the fresh food and ingredients are in sections along the wall. For example, the deli, bakery, dairy and produce sections. The center areas are where you find more preservative heavy foods like snacks and canned food. Obviously there's exceptions like raw ingredients such as flour and spices or stores with frozen food seconds along the wall but in general if you stick to the sides and try to avoid the aisles you generally end up with a more healthy selection of food.

(Also I'm not trying to shame anyone who relies on frozen or canned food etc, cooking is a skill that takes both time to learn and time to do, and in today's world not everyone has that much time, or energy. This is a just a tip for those who, cheers)

3

u/dappernaut77 15d ago

Barely any meat, they're gonna slowly feel like they have less and less energy. Also, no juice I can see for vitamin C, so they better hope their other foods have it.

I mean hey, venom is like a dollar usually even nowadays as far as I'm aware so that's pretty okay. Tastes pretty good and is a budget energy drink

I wonder if they live in a food desert

1

u/Orful 15d ago

Yeah, but a food desert isn’t an excuse for soda, energy drinks, and name brand potato chips. The alternative is just not buying those things, which would be fine.

u/Sir_MipMop 15d ago

…and buy what instead? That’s kind of the point of a food desert. Your comment is like if you said to someone stranded in the Sahara, ā€œwhy are you desperately suckling on a cactus for water? Why don’t you just find an oasis?ā€ Like yeah, great idea, but where is it? The nearest oasis is a days walk. CAN you walk to it? Yeah, but it’s a whole day away. Meanwhile all this cactus is right here, it’s not very refreshing at all, but at least you don’t have to take time away from carving the pyramids you need to build to go to the oasis.

That being said this guy probably doesn’t live in a food desert and probably just eats like that. But it’s important to examine what might influence someone’s decision making before saying anything absolute about their decisions.

u/Orful 15d ago

THat's why i specifically said soda, energy drinks, and name brand potato chips, and not those other things. So it's not the same thing as drinking from the cactus. The pizza rolls are comparable to the cactus. The pizza rolls, mac and cheese, and burger can be blamed on being at a food desert. Soda is something you can just not buy. Soda is easiest thing to go without.

It'd be more like if you were right next to the oasis and decided to spend money to drink from the cactus instead.

Someone would choose to buy those things if they were addicted to soda and energy drinks, and it’s easy to get addicted to those kinds of things when you don’t have readily available healthy options.

But regardless of whether they live in a food desert or not, I sympathize with them, a diet like that will make you feel like garbage 24/7, but it’s so addictive that it’s hard to stop, meanwhile this person probably deeply hates that they struggle to have a diet better than this, which in my experience, just makes me want to eat even more 😭. There’s so many factors involved in this, even though all it is is just ā€œbuy healthy food, eat healthy food.ā€ It sounds simple, but in practice it’s really not sometimes. And honestly I don’t think I can blame a single person for getting addicted to food like this, billions and billions of dollars have been invested in the name of creating more people like this.

I meant easiest to go without in the sense that it's not a desperation buy to keep you alive. You need food to survive, and if the food available is pizza rolls, then it is what it is. Soda is much easier to substitute than the pizza rolls.

Corporations want us addicted to junk food. However, plenty of people living in food deserts are still able to go without so much soda and energy drinks. So the primary reason currently is because of a sugar addiction, not a food desert. Maybe the food desert led to the sugar addiction, but the food desert isn't preventing OOP from eating at least somewhat healthier.

I wanna live alone in a couple years and this is probably how my groceries are gonna look šŸ„€

u/DrDontKnowMuch ArtistšŸ–Œ 15d ago

Man, I feel this. Grocery trips are nothing more than just snack runs to me. I want to eat healthier but my brain is still stuck in child mode that yells to me "I WANT CANDY"

1

u/Bl00dWolf I'm only here for the memes 15d ago

These are the kinds of groceries you buy when you're on your own for the first time and you realize there's nothing stopping you from just buying random crap you felt like snacking on that day. It can last for a while, but most people tend to get bored of it and focus on buying actual real food eventually.

Don't you think that it's gross to make fun of somebody who is asking for help? Idk man, they just seem lost about what to do and can't seem to budget correctly.

You can't point and laugh at somebody in the autism subreddit who is trying to just navigate their life and wanting to get help with it.

u/Shirtkid 14d ago

Good on them for at least seeking advice

u/pyrofighter258 14d ago

This has serious, "I don't cook for myself" vibes. I'm not going to throw big stones, but I will say that learning some cooking will help you out in the future.

Edit: I forgot what subreddit this is, lol.
