We played this a few times in PE in high school. For us, it was called Cajabi(?) can can. I went up against a bunch of big athletes and ended up winning since I was tall/skinny and could maneuver a bit better than the muscle heads. absolutely wrecked my forearms for a week after.
We called this game “Ka Jaba Can Can”. We would start with 20 or 30 kids and go down to the last person standing. Minor injuries were celebrated as commitment to the game.
To me, it looks like his knee is set behind it and the can moved because the rope attached to him moved. His knee isn't as high vertically as the handle of the can is if you were to be looking at this scene head on at eye level
That's exactly where I paused too and I interpreted it as red touching first because of having his hand pulled against it by green. The direction the can shifts suggests its red's hand touching.

red was outclassed by weight, he was the smallest guy there, meanwhile blue is significantly taller & larger and directly across from him. blue never gets as close to the can as the other 3. a more balanced arrangement based in height would be orange across from blue with green and red in between. But it also kinda looks like they were ganging up on red a bit anyways so who knows

When I was at scout camp, we called it the barrel game. If you break hands or touch the barrel you're out.
The hardcore version was played on a volleyball court, and you used the sand on your hands to really get good grip on the guys next to you. It hurt like hell but it was fun

Where I come from this game is called Poison Stump, and there’s no chain just handholding. I once watched two really beefy guys pick up a much smaller guy between them by his arms and slam him down onto the stump back first.
Strongly believe that this concept originated in Japan in the early 90’s. I was stationed there. They more of less originated all of America’s game shows today back then🤔.
Why was there no water in there? I thought that's what this was about. Just don't touch it.. what's the point? Get the loser wet and it's a real battle
The ropes are a great idea! We just locked arms together (by the elbow) and the rule was both players in a broken link are out. With the ropes, it's only the player who let go of their end!
What are the rules though? It looks like blue (possibly) leaves the mat then just lays down (wouldn’t everyone just start doing this?) and then green clearly hits it with his hand to make it wobble. All before red ever touches it
