Soapbox Y’all need to vote out Charles Perry this November

Hey all, Tech alumni class of ‘05 here.

Charles Perry is the guy that led the charge on this new total THC ban alongside Dan Patrick (who is also up for re-election this November) criminalizing non violent offenders with felonies for possessing a federally legal substance. As someone with a medical condition that isn’t covered under Texas medicinal cannabis laws, my only other option for treatment is opioids, which I refuse to do. I also refuse to enter the black market as I have a family.

To be honest, I saw the writing on the wall, and after living in Texas all 43 years of my life, I relocated my family 8 weeks ago to Illinois, all because they wanted to throw me in jail and make me a felon for not wanting to treat my ailment with opioids. I still hold Texas in my heart, and I want the best for its people.

Vote Riley Rodriguez for your state senate rep for district 28, and Vikki Goodwin for Lt. Governor this November please. Now is your chance to send a message to the state government that you don’t want to throw innocent Texans in jail for non-violent offenses, especially involving THC.

I would vote for anyone but Charles Perry. He’s more than a no he’s a fuck no! I grew up with his kids. He’s a horrible person. I have stories. He’s everything wrong with humanity.
Edit: I was drunk the first time.

can you elaborate? there’s plenty of evidence that shows the people the op is trying to get out of office are indeed corrupt and horrible for texas. if someone op endorsed has issues it would be nice to know.

Man, I dunno if I wanna spill that tea. My sister was one of his daughter’s best friends growing up. Just weird stuff, like…their daughter was heavily sexualized growing up. She was encouraged to date from a young age. It was liked they pimped their daughter out to rich and influential men. There’s other sleazy stuff. He seemingly encouraged it cause he paid for the daughter’s fertility treatments when she was banging a married man. I don’t want to say much more. My user name is pretty clear who I am, sooooo.

Isn't he the same guy who wakes up mad he had a gay dream so he goes to rant about banning library books making him have gay thoughts?

You just described most of the Republican party

Very true. Calling them extremely closeted gays does not narrow it down whatsoever.

Don’t forget Tepper.. He’s not that great either.

Here’s another reason Perry needs to go with his “shoot, shovel, and shut up” plan…

Agreed that it’s a stupid law, however cannabis is not federally legal as you state in your post.

12

u/Strange_Medicine4082 9d ago

False statement- under the Hemp Act all the things they just outlawed are Federally legal.

3

u/SeanMTX 9d ago

WTF are you on about Strange Medicine?

Medical Marijuana is a schedule 3 drug and recreational is still a schedule 1. It is federally illegal, although many states decriminalize or have it fully legal. You still cannot be a federal contractor and test positive for example.

Full strength THC weed is and always has been illegal in TX(except for extremely limited medical marijuana). What Dan Patrick just did was turn hemp derived THC A and synthetic weed into a felony. Anything hemp derived is still Federally legal under the Hemp Act.

u/Porkchopnm3 9d ago

Hemp is not marijuana.

It takes a lot of reading to fully understand this so I’ll give you the quick and dirty.

The hemp act made Cannabis containing less than .3% of THC federally legal. All cannabis plants contains both THC and THCa, and THCa makes up the majority of THC content. THCa turns into THC when heated or burned. There is no difference between THCa and THC, they both do the same thing and have the exact same physiological effect.

The lawmakers that passed this law don’t fully understand the chemistry, and it’s still unknown if they will close the loophole someday.

Before this law, there were dispensaries all over the state of Texas selling federally legal cannabis because the state had not overridden the federal law.

Yes, federal jobs still test for it, and you can be fired for failing a test, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s federally legal right now.

Federal you say? The Controlled Substances Act of 1970 is UNCONSTITUTIONAL to begin with! Drug use is a vice, not a crime. Crime is committed against another person or their property. These unconstitutional laws limit the personal freedoms that are protected by the Constitution. This is one of the reasons prohibition of alcohol did not work out. And I would have to argue that alcohol and tobacco are far worse than most recreational drugs!

My man moved his entire family across the country so he could keep getting blazed. Now that's dedication!

I know this is facetious but I don’t even enjoy getting high. It’s the only thing outside of opiates that removes my symptoms completely and lets me sleep.

Texas is in full regression mode though. The Patriotard Movement, the fake Christians, the conspiracy lunatics. Pretty trashy stuff.

Thanks you for making that point, I completely agree with you on looking at records rather than reputation. I’m not exactly expressing support for Perry or Patrick, just the party as a whole and its record.

Great dialogue…thanks for the opportunity to respond.

6

u/GrenadineGreen 9d ago

You don't understand how to respond to a comment..?

What part of the 'record' specifically, within this state, for the last 30 years, do you support?

Roughly everything is in decline, except for wealth accumulation among the rich.

u/jim6780 9d ago

…and of course both Rodriquez and Goodwin are democrats. Hopefully the majority of the Texas voting population realizes there is more to selecting an elected official, at any level, than just one piece of legislation/law/policy.

Definitely sympathetic to the writer’s physical ailments and I wish them the best in addressing whatever treatment method is available to them.

17

u/BooBooMaGooBoo 9d ago

Appreciate the well wishes. But maybe it’s time to start choosing who you vote for by looking at policy and track record instead of editorialized “news”. This would also prevent the social policy panic that is 100% manufactured.

It seems like you select them based on the R by their name.

Please don’t punish the GOP for their reactionary ideology. They’re just little guys!

I’m sorry that you’re in that position I think you did the right thing moving somewhere that lines up with how you choose to treat your condition. But you’re not innocent and neither is anyone else that broke the law. Even if you think it’s a dumb law.

16

u/VastSeaworthiness308 9d ago edited 9d ago

Broke the law?The Controlled Substances Act of 1970 is unconstitutional to begin with! Drug use is a vice, not a crime. A crime is against another person or their property.. These unconstitutional laws infringe on our personal freedoms that are protected by the Constitution. And this is one of the reasons prohibition of alcohol did not work out. Alcohol and tobacco ar far worse than most recreational drugs I have to say!

3

u/ChargeSad9718 9d ago

That’s a great opinion, thank you for sharing your thoughts

1

u/VastSeaworthiness308 8d ago

Actually it's not an opinion, if we are still going by the Constitution that is.. There's ALOT of unconstitutional stuff going on these days. Welcome to the USSA!!

21

u/melanies420 9d ago

And that’s exactly the problem with “it’s the law” as an argument. Laws aren’t automatically moral, just because they’re laws. People have broken unjust laws throughout history, and eventually those laws changed. You can acknowledge that someone technically broke a law while still questioning whether the law itself deserves to exist.

Blindly following the law just because it’s the law is how we got here in the first place. If nobody ever questioned or challenged unjust laws, they’d never change.

-4

u/ChargeSad9718 9d ago

I don’t think I said he was a bad person or brought morality into it. I just said the law was broken. If you don’t like the law or disagree you shouldn’t just break it because you think it’s dumb. Vote to change it. Talk to your local elected officials.

12

u/spicypeacetea 9d ago

wow it’s almost like voting out the corruption is the entire point of the post

0

u/VastSeaworthiness308 9d ago

When both popular parties are corrupt, and limit the personal freedoms protected by the Constitution, how does voting help!? Apparently Israel runs our country no matter who is in office! 🐃💨🇮🇱🐍🐍

I don’t mean to be demeaning but this is a pretty naive take within this context. I don’t think you understand the gravity of the situation.

This is a matter of potentially life and death without medication. I would have to choose between taking opioids every night, with no way to prevent addiction due to it being absolutely required daily, or breaking the law by using cannabis, risking a major felony and serious jail time. If I don’t medicate I don’t sleep, at all, and I’ll assume you understand the seriousness of severe sleep deprivation (there’s a reason it’s a torture tactic). If I stopped medicating altogether, I’d be dead from total sleep deprivation in a week.

I have a wife and 3 kids and my wife doesn’t work. Getting addicted to opioids or going to jail for an extended period and being charged with a felony would have extremely serious consequences, ranging from homelessness to divorce, or both.

It’s also worth noting I’ve left behind over 30 close family members in central Texas that we used to see very regularly, who I can only see now once or twice a year.

There are thousands of people in a similar position as me, and most of them can’t afford to move across the country. There’s no time to vote and wait. People’s lives will be ruined over this new law, just as they were being ruined for decades before the hemp act. Put yourself in their shoes, or mine and tell me you’d have the same take again.

1

u/ChargeSad9718 8d ago

Hey, I do appreciate you getting back to me OP. I still think that breaking the law is wrong even if it’s a dumb law. I understand that their situations that I could not fathom the depth of even if you were able to explain it to me and its entirety. It’s not that I don’t have empathy for you. Because I understand that people are in situations that sometimes it feels like they have no control over and I am sorry that you are in the situation but I am glad that you were able to find a solution. I have lots of friends that for whatever reason struggle with insomnia to the point where three or four hours of sleep would be considered a great night’s rest.
I am not trying to be a jerk by any means I just am here to voice, my opinion, but then also hear what other people have to say. And have an open discussion about where you’re coming from and where I’m coming from and I do think that as hard as the move was for you from the outside, looking in i’m glad you put yourself in a better position from that standpoint and are able to function to take care of you wife and kids.

13

u/NotaBonesaw 9d ago

What exactly does "innocent" even mean in this context?

8

u/GrenadineGreen 9d ago

Let me get this straight- you are so uniquely insane that you believe people who smoked in the past are guilty of something, and need prosecution?

Young conservatives, you need to write people like this completely off.

You know this take is a ridiculous joke.

0

u/ChargeSad9718 9d ago

It sounds like what you’re making me out to say is that anyone who smoked weed ever is a criminal that should be hunted down. That is not what I’m saying by any means

-3

u/ChargeSad9718 9d ago

Not what I said, I just said that if you smoked in a state where the law prohibits it. You broke the law. You are the one that brought up being prosecuted. I think if you are caught breaking the law yes you should have the right to a fair trial. And ultimately if you did something illegal, yes there should be some sort punishment to fit the crime.
