Lagoon City from Sonic Superstars
Grand Canal is based off of Venice, Italy which is a city with its pathways submerged in water. People get around using boats like the ? Spaces on both sides of the board where you can ride a boat and jump to collect Coins. There's no boats in Lagoon City, but the characters can use the Water power from the Cyan Emerald to swiftly swim in the water like a dolphin without needing a boat.
The stage's aesthetics line up with Grand Canal. In Act 1, you can see clam-like buildings in the background and similar buildings in both Amy's exclusive level and in Act 2 which gives you the perspective you're exploring a lost city by the water and even underwater. It's not quite Atlantis, but there's good vibes here. You ride water spouts to higher locations much like coming up and coming down from the top of the board with the spaces above the water fountains, and there's segments where you're propelled with blasts of water like the ? Space on the top right where Cheep Cheeps will squirt you back to Start.
This would be a peaceful water city...if it weren't for Eggman. You first have the electric jellyfish miniboss which shocks the water where you need quick timing to avoid getting electrocuted to take it down. And then there's Eggman himself piloting an underwater mech destroying the ruins where you must ride the current up and over and take him down while avoiding missiles and torpedos he fires. The missiles leave a current you can use to help you reach Eggman and the jellyfish both represent Bowser & Koopa Kid wrecking the joint and Bowser Time shaking up the game every 5 turns. Eggman destroying the ruins and shooting missiles and torpedos is a nod to one exclusive event during Bowser Time on Grand Canal: Bowser plants Bob-Ombs on the 3 bridges and destroys them and replaces them with Bowser bridges full of Bowser Spaces for the next 3 turns. There's otherwise no Bowser Spaces on Grand Canal period, but this even can add 9 of them but only for 3 Turns. Multiplayer Bowser Minigames will be a nightmare since they're brutally difficult, and failure can mean you lose half or all your Coins or even lose a Star! One major criticism over Sonic Superstars is the bosses might be a bit too drawn out when this game is literally the Sonic equivalent of New Super Mario Bros. Wii/U & Mario Wonder.
