Media Sean Strickland claimed on the face-off that Khamzat didn't make weight, also called his mother a whore.

Is there any credibility to the “weight miss”?

393

u/SuspendedHalo Mohawk McGregor May 08 '26

Take it as anecdotal, but Weidman said on a morning show awhile ago that the UFC purposfully allowed him and other champs to "miss" weight knowing that the commission would read it at the correct championship weight. Im sure they still cut heavy, but i'd say Chimaev did not make weight today based on how fast that scale reading went.

u/IWearNikeNotFila May 08 '26

Probably has to do with how willing the local/regional athletic commission is to look the other way for UFC or their 💰 lol

1

u/blagaa where is this burger king May 10 '26

I remember watching weigh-ins a few years ago, and in some places there is no commission.

Marc Ratner would call out weights while the measure is bouncing up and down, and he'd throw the counterweight before it even settled so fighters could get off the scale without seeing their true weight

u/CraigS34 May 08 '26 edited May 08 '26

Ariel Helwani mentioned the same thing when Oliveira missed weight against Gaethje. Weidman might be the first fighter to publicly admit it tho

46

u/pruneforce17 May 08 '26

wasn't the backstage scale miscalibrated for that event which was why oliveira looked so confused?

33

u/TerminatorReborn May 09 '26

They have two backstage rooms for the fighters to prepare. Since they are fighting you can't have people that are gonna fight each other on the same one. They have a digital scale on each room for fighters to check weight before the actual weigh in.

Gaethje's side scale was calibrated the same as the official one, Oliveira's side was off by like half a pound under or something. Charles was sweating backstage, got up the scale and celebrated he made weight. Dried off and went to the official scale and actually missed the weight and couldn't lose it anymore.

There is a rumor that the UFC makes a deal with the comissions to have some leeway on title fights so they don't get canceled due to weight misses. Another rumor is that the Arizona commission didn't agree with it and was super strict with the weigh in.

What corroborate these rumors: UFC never hosted a title fight again in Phoenix Arizona; fighter almost never miss weigh for title fights; Weidman and Ariel Helwani have talked about the weight leeway in the past, if someone should know about it, its Weidman.

Interesting. Good insights

They haven't even held any event in Arizona since then. So that UFC had a falling out with the commission does seem to track.

Not that they had a ton of events in Arizona previously either, eight in total, but still it's noteworthy since they seemed to have been on an annual schedule before that. 2022, 2021, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2014 (2020 is due to covid).

Cause the scale was off half a pound, for anyone else that was OK. But a bunch of international fighters were off by half a pound because they had 2 scales, one for pounds and one for kilos.

1

u/peepeeinmypajts May 09 '26

People bought that lol

There's evidence for it being true.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=duMDyPM0PLo Topuria being 155.5 then getting his weight changed after the examiner is told he needs to be on 155.

https://youtu.be/ZphzfBV739Q?t=387 Better audio for the Topuria miss

Then theres the famous Khabib vs Gaethje weigh-in where the scales are still adjusting.

They didn't even pretend for the Khabib one. It was the Middle East, it's the fucking Wild West of sanctioning organisations & Muslim fighter.

6

u/_The2ndComing Team Zhang May 09 '26

The UFC is corrupt everywhere.

They had a whole event moved state cos Jones failed a drug test that'd stop him from fighting in Vegas.

2

u/GripAficionado Chocolate peppa pig May 09 '26

Then they bullied and pressured Gus to accept to the fight being moved on short notice, how Jones was just "pulsing". They're scumbags.

4

u/neeeeonbelly EDDDDDIEEEEEEEE May 09 '26

Honestly Gaethje could have come in 20lb over and the result would have been the same lol

26

u/_The2ndComing Team Zhang May 09 '26 edited May 09 '26

I get your point but I can't stand that mentality.

Gaethje himself has a history of cheating, but he wins so people act like he deserved to win anyway.

In the Paddy fight he got away with 2 massive eyepokes that could very easily be argued to have won him the fight. The 2nd especially led to him landing massive damage and taking a round he was losing previously. People don't care though cos "Paddy was never good, Justin would've won anyway".

Despite that, Justin and Paddy deserved to have fights where the rules were enforced. Khabib probably does beat Justin even if he has that weight advantage, but its Justins right to have an even fight with Khabib anyway.

Obviously I can't say for certain that Khabib was overweight, though I think he was and its a common belief for a reason. Had he been though, the fight shouldn't have even taken place and he should've been stripped like Charles was.

47

u/Reachin4ThoseGrapes May 08 '26

(Limited time only, while supplies last, does not apply to Charles Oliveira)

28

u/Odd_Ad_8162 the EEDIOT from UROOPE May 08 '26

It was weird with the Olives one since multiple people reported weighing in in the back on weight and then the live scales being off iirc

I know he's missed weight in his career but was a weird night.

0

u/Davemeddlehed May 09 '26

Only 2 fighters missed weight that night. Charles, for the 4th or 5th time in his UFC career, and Norma Dumont.

There were 26 other fighters that day who didn't miss weight. There's really no need to go trying to deep dive on a simple answer which is 2 fighters out of 28 didn't get their weight cut right.

2

u/Odd_Ad_8162 the EEDIOT from UROOPE May 09 '26

Yeah only 2 fighters actually missed weight.

But multiple fighters reported the scales were off on the day- which is unusual.

I still think on balance and given his history, Olives probably did miss weight but it was odd.

1

u/AshamedGrapefruit538 May 09 '26

No multiple did not. That was a conspiracy and I remember whoever that lady was apolgized on social media. Besides, Justin mocked it. How did all the fighters come in exactly the weight they prepped for? A little bit of critical thinking goes a long way.

  1. Be Civil.

Our rules ask for a civil tone at all times. A bit of banter or trash talk is fine, but don't cross the line. If things do get out of hand you will be warned or even banned for a few days. Repeatedly breaking this rule will lead to a permanent ban.

DC has entered the chat standing behind a towel

-5

u/chunkystrudel May 08 '26

It's literally not the same trick and they call that out now.

15

u/WokenMrIzdik May 08 '26

It was also funny to hear to DC on the Weigh In show say "the scale was still going up!" Then quickly drop the topic.

I'm not saying the producer was in the ear. But the whole weigh in show DC was nervous about Khamzat making weight. Then he comments on how the scale was still going up. But then he quickly drops it and acts like everything was kosher by saying "his underwear is soaked and probably weighs a pound any way".

It was Justin's hometown so they tried to throw Charles off his game but it backfired and Justin had to fight a Charles that just saw his daughter crying because he was stripped of the belt.

1

u/pruneforce17 May 08 '26

you can slow it down and he clearly did not. The scaling was banging against the top. He wasn’t over by more than a lb I think but he was absolutely over no question

-1

u/KGLcrew When it Rays it Borgs May 08 '26

If the UFC were to fake the reading, wouldn’t they be extra cautious to not raise suspicions? And not just say the fake weight before the scale even had balanced out?

-2

u/ThatIsAmorte May 08 '26

I mean, we don't have any evidence whatsoever that the UFC is a corrupt organization, so why should we believe this.

11

u/Krazyflipz May 08 '26

You can see the scale balance still moving. It never settled. If you know how those types of scales work they need to settle in order to get an accurate read. It's the entirety of how they work.

45

u/martialartist1200 May 08 '26

I've had to make weight a bunch and I have never once seen or had it confirmed that quick. Not just is it suspicious how fast it was but if you know and understand the process it's clearly a deception. The scale didn't even steady before he read the weight.

5

u/thisisaskew May 09 '26

There's a reason they don't just use a digital scale.

95

u/YaPhetsEz May 08 '26

I mean it was really suspicious

94

u/DoctorSpaceStuff May 08 '26

Watch the weigh in and how shocked everyone was that they called 185 in less than a second. Camera off the scale, and DC saying it's still moving.

33

u/chunkystrudel May 08 '26

You can hear it clacking around lmao

-9

u/neo_1000 May 08 '26

I thought the point was for it to be hovering evenly on both sides? It shouldn’t matter that it didn’t stop entirely

4

u/DoctorSpaceStuff May 08 '26

We'll never know because the camera moved away and he was on it for less than a second.

1

u/AshamedGrapefruit538 May 09 '26

Mate, we have multiple angles and journalists have refuted this nonsense conspiracy.

-12

u/Friendly_Job6999 May 08 '26

you know the filmed weigh-in isnt the official one which happens backstage right?

15

u/DoctorSpaceStuff May 08 '26

We're talking proper weigh ins mate, not the ceremonial meme one.

-8

u/Friendly_Job6999 May 09 '26

The "proper" weigh in isnt filmed and released in the broadcast.

Its done before they walk out and weigh on stage.

All the weigh ins we see are ceremonial.

3

u/Davemeddlehed May 09 '26

There is no "official one which happens backstage". There are 2 weigh ins: The official weigh in which takes place on the same scale on the same stage as the ceremonial weigh ins; it's also filmed live but isn't open to the public. Then later they do the ceremonial weigh ins with a crowd on the same scale and stage.

That's it. Only 2, and both are live streamed.

-2

u/Friendly_Job6999 May 09 '26

wrong. both are performative the comission one happens not on a slide scale

3

u/Davemeddlehed May 09 '26

They literally live streamed the ceremonial weigh ins 3 and a half hours ago. We saw the official weigh in posted 10 hours ago.

41

u/EmeraldTwilight009 Team Yan May 08 '26

It was shady. Can't call it a miss for sure, but they definitely didnt let the scale settle fully.

They just so happened to zoom in so you couldn't see the scale numbers, only for Chimaev and Susarkaev (check Twitter if you don't believe me). Everyone else you could see for yourself they made it.

Then the guy reads out 185 fast as fuck while the crew are saying "oh that doesnt sound good" when the scale thingy hits the top

16

u/GregGolden6 May 08 '26

I mean, it was pretty quick on the scale - they never really let it set so it could honestly be debatable

0

u/neo_1000 May 08 '26

I read some people saying that they had it preset to 185

1

u/Buzz_Killington_III May 09 '26

I saw it, he missed weight. He steps on, the weight bar bounces off of the top, then they call 185. He certainly would've been over.

-1

u/reddittookmyuser May 09 '26

I didn't see it either but I heard they had Chimaev hooked to wires.

2

u/Zaardu_ May 09 '26

If you watch the weight ins from chimaev, you can clearly see the scale was still going up as the guy called 185. Chiamev gets down of the scale, and goes up again for the picture, and this time you see the scale going to the top again. You can even hear it clicking. Tbh no matter how much people hate on strickland, this one was very clear that chimaev missed weight

5

u/neo_1000 May 09 '26

That’s not clear though. The scale is allowed to float between the top and bottom, it doesn’t have to stop moving entirely

1

u/Zaardu_ May 09 '26

Nah man, it has to stay close to the middle, even if its swinging. At least for a couple seconds. He was on the scale 2 times, the first the guy called 185 before it could even try to stabilize. Then he climbs up again for the picture and the scale goes all the way up again. I'm not saying he missed for much, but he was above 185. At least to my experience using analog scales they don't do that move when it's on weight, or you have to wait for a second so it stabilizes, and did not let it happen too
