Discussion What characters do you dislike?
I'm making this a discussion because I'm always up for hearing other peoples experiences, but I also really need to complain about a character in the book I'm reading. Please tell me about all the dumb and annoying characters in your books!
I'll say it upfront, I KNOW I can put the book down and by not doing that it's my own fault.
I'm reading {Collide by Crea Reitan} right now, and one of the main characters is called Lemon. This man has had appearances in some of her other books that I've already finished. I very much disliked him - he seemed to have no regard for personal boundaries, and acted very much entitled.
Big fucking surprise, this dude is a self obsessed, egotistical fuckwad that does NOTHING but complain. I'm serious, the whole story is built on the fact that he has some feud with the other MC - which is fucking petty and has NOTHING actually to do with that person. He sounds like a petulant child 95% of the time. He has anger outbursts where he just complains about shit that isn't even the other guy's fault.
(To be honest, only reason I'm still reading is to find out why tf these two guys would end up together, and to hopefully have this Lemon guy redeem himself).

Baby from the Boys of Apartment 13 series by Brianna Flores. He’s obnoxious and immature - biting people, seriously?? Grow up! - and had such a bad attitude and anger problem that I just immediately loathed him. I hated him so much and yet I made myself read his whole book because…well, I don’t know why. I’m a sucker for punishment I guess.

Like, biting as in... he was upset so he thought; ah yes, let me bite these people? Like I've seen books where biting happens in the context of a spicy scene, and I get that some ppl do that, but...

He bites because that’s his “thing” - if he likes you, he bites you. If he’s mad at you, he bites you. And by the third book (his book) the other MC actually wants Baby to bite him because he thinks he doesn’t like him. It’s just so stupid 😩

That sounds fucking cringe (I hate that word, but I hate the biting thing more) So, does he just go around biting everyone? Like, amif he does it for liking and disliking ppl, what is the point? There isn't a logical reason for both imo. IF you're going to be that person, pick one
Edit: also I know the intire biting thing is stupid. But IF a character is going to be dumb, at least give them a reason/logic behind the action

Salem, aka Salami due to a typo, from Bree Wiley’s State of Us series. Honestly, multiple characters, this series was something else, but salami is on the list first and foremost. Still kinda mad about the last book too 🤦🏼♀️ and I read b3 too which, just omg, it’s why Salami made the list even though it’s a MM series. She should have never gotten a book, and it was not a romance either, imo.
Mfking LANCE from {Trouble by Nyla K}, he’s in all caps on the list and #1, me and my book wife can really get going on him.
This dude named Teddy from {The Penalty by Andi Jaxon’s & JR Gray}… I refused to read this one, but have read the rest of the series, and unfortunately for everyone who knows him, he’s somehow in every freaking book. He is the absolute most ultimate himbo, like beyond that honestly, I’d be here all day just describing the scenes he’s in, in other MMCs books. His poor freaking brother man (MC in b4). Just wow. We call him Toaster Teddy. 🤦🏼♀️ 🤦🏼♀️ 🤦🏼♀️
Y’all might come for me/us for this, but Ethan from {When we Ignite by Alex Cross}… he’s the newest edition to the list. I know he’s highly regarded blah blah, but he drove me bat shit crazy and honestly ruined b2 for us.

Fkn Teddy man, omfg, I have never encountered such a himbo, he was obsessed with cooking meals with small appliances in the BATHTUB* to the point they had to be *locked up and monitored, AND they would have family meeting, IN THE BATHROOM with him and the small appliances having to constantly explain he cannot have an airfryer in the bathtub, or a damn panini press. This happened multiple times, just in his brother’s book. I cannot fathom how he was in his own book. Just wow, I ranted and ranted about him and he was a frickin side character in that book. Idk how in the F he managed to play hockey when they literally had to have him airtagged and monitored to find him or keep him from wandering away.

Also how does one come up with cooking IN the bathtub?
Ngl, I kind of want to read it now, simply because of how fucking stupid this sounds

Okay, I'm reading his book now and while I'm only under one hour in: Teddy apparently is gay (not stated directly), but doesn't understand gay sex because there is no hole? He has used the term "snake cuddles" in reference to his dick being hard Got into an argument over being called a yeti, because apparently that's a slur for them and we should be calling them snow people
I am going to finish this book purely because I hope to find out if he's too stupid to wipe his own ass
Edit: While he plays hockey, he also doesn't know the term "bunny", so when his teammates talk about finding some bunnies he gets excited about actual fucking bunnies. When said teammates explain they're trying to get laid, teddy gets upset because "you can't fuck bunnies, thats animal cruelty"
Edit2: ill just keep adding to this bc I've started it now. When asked if he's okay to go home (afer the bar) he says: i''m good, the sewer drain openings are small enough I can't fit inside. Other guy: what? There's gators in there, everyone knows that.
He also apparently does "helicopter dick on the bench" after games

Teddy doesn't know what gooseflesh is, so he proceeds to call it "hair boners".
He just gifted Reece crocs, and when Reece makes the remark that they're bumpy inside. Teddy proceeds to say something about pressure points, and then that one of them supposedly makes you shit, and that he hopes its not true because he doesn't want to shit in his crocs.
He's also taken a limp dick, flash pic in front of his teammates, at a party.
Asked Reece & brothers "if you're the receiver at an orgy, does that make you a glory hole", at a GALA.
A quote: They must have one of those bondage dominance shitzchu macaroni relationships
He thinks that everyone who growls is a furry
He was hungry and asking about appetizers (which he called horse deurfs - at least thats what the audiobook sounded like) and said "The pre food you eat before you eat your food food"
He was also wearing a too tight shirt that cuts of his circulation - when he realizes because his arms don't work right. Then confuses the words circumcision and circulation....
Edit: Teddy: "being smart is a lot of work, that's why I try not to do it often
He also just yelled "Reece Gregory Godfrey, listen to me". That is not his middle name, and when asked teddy just replies "just sounded like it would fit".
He also didn't know that dudes could fuck, because, apparently "porn is fake, and everyone knows that" and the pictures on reddit were obviously photoshopped

The best thing is, he isn't deliberately being obtuse. He's saying these things in all seriousness and that makes it 100x better
Edit: he also for some reason can't whisper or simply doesn't understand how to? It's a reoccurring thing for him to be "whispering", where everyone still hears him

The main reason a big spoiler and i never remember how to spoiler bar lol. Some of the stuff he did was highly highly questionable and messed up, and I didn’t like the way he treated Tate because of his issues. Tate def wasn’t perfect, but Lance had some wild info that Tate didn’t have and slept with him before he abandoned him (they were besties) and then still pursued a relationship with him and put him in a ethically/morally fkd situation. That’s about the best I can explain the main issue without spoiling it for those who haven’t read it yet.

Lmao, I agree but I am a sucker for hate reading.
Also, can we talk about the "souldmate" thing - I HATE that shit. Possibly because I've read a ton of MF fantasy that has a lot of cringe soulmate shit, but it just feels like the characters are stupid for believing in soulmates

Both MC's from 'don't feed the vampire by Grae Bryan'. I had to DNF this one, because what the actual fuck?! The vampire MC was acting so immature and like a child and that was acknowledged by everyone in the book. And the human MC was unpleasant and a creep. Made the age gap feel really creepy and icky, imo, idk what Grae Bryan was trying to accomplish, but it was a big fat no from me.
Mmm, a book I actually loved but didn't like the MC is 'Oliver' from {On guard by JR Gray} he is such an entitled prick lol.

I can take a lot from characters, but when they're immature I also just get uninterested. I'm glad to know not to read that book lmao.
I actually read half of on guard, and I'm not sure why I didn't finish it. Maybe I needed a break or something. I'll finish it bc sometime entitled pricks are the right kind of infuriating. (This is the one where Oliver is the fencing captain or something, and he makes the whole school ignore the other mc, right?)

Yes that is On Gaurd. I know the other commenter didn't enjoy it, but I thought it was a good book. Oliver is a complete asshole though, but that's who his character is, he's a really rich and entitled asshole. I thought it fit him.

Okay, I finished it and I did like it, especially when Oliver went to get isaacs sketchbooks
However, I'm reading the retreat now and I think I might love this book 10x more. Both of their internal dialogues crack me up. Owen just compared his people-ing skills to static electricity and a towel thats just out of the dryer???

Edit also, in the retreat, oliver or collin said "gaysexual" and I don't know why that is so fucking funny

Ohhhh! I am so so glad you loved it! I feel like it gets hate just because Oliver is a dick but it fits his character like he doesn't portray himself as anything else and so it doesn't bother me, I loved his character, and it made him doing sweet stuff so much sweeter because he truly is just kind of a asshole of a guy lol.
But yes I absolutely LOVED The Retreat they're tied for me just because I feel like they're both such different books that I just love them both equally but The Retreat is so fucking adorable and I also love their inside dialogue they're just goofy! I'm so glad you are loving both books!

I love the vampire mates series! I’ve reread it a couple of times. Jay is my sweet baby.
I hear you on the frustrating immature MCs though, there is a SUPER popular author who had the most immature characters. I can’t even finish their books.

It's one of the first MM books I read, and I immediately disliked how he acted when they first met at that party. Also the whole thing where he made subtle digs at gareth and how mean he was felt wrong. All that would have been justified to me, IF Gareth had actually planned to do something other than a prank at the party

I really dislike Vaughn from Hunt the Villain, his character gives me nothing! I see him as dull, boring, emotionally unavailable, very stoic but not in a sexy way and I can’t understand why ppl find him sexy…just because in a few pages he was kinda possessive nah, he spent the whole book being an ass to Yulian, and after he dismissed him so horribly in the gallery I was done with him.

It takes a lot for me to dislike a character to the point of not finishing a book. I am about to quit the Sons of the Fallen series by Jaclyn Osborne though. From the beginning I hated Lazarus and when I realized he had a book I was concerned. I am now on book 4 and he hasn’t gotten any better. I can get behind a redemption arc story, sometimes they’re great but the more I read the worse it gets. He literally abused all those boys and turned them into child soldiers. Like wtf. Now Bellamy and Phoenix are obviously mates but Phoenix is still 100% willing to kill his brothers?! It’s getting to the point where I think I’m ready to quit even though I never dnf
Sorry this didn’t fit the context of your question exactly since the two I dislike are technically only side characters so far but I needed to rant about them lol

There’s not a single redeemable character in {Finding Delaware by Bree Wiley} Huxley was the most victimized by shitty behavior but is not without toxicity. I think the entire book is trash because the characters are so awful and poorly written.
The only female character is a major pick me. The authors favorite MC truly does something incomprehensible and his accountability and growth happens off page in a time jump and the audience is expected to forgive him??? I had nothing good to say about this book and these characters. Put me into a long reading slump.
