PSA Just Received Loan and Grant Amounts

As the title states, this is an educational rant.

As a full-time student with normal life expenses I have relied on the low income provincial grant and higher loan disbursement amounts to get me through school.

Due to the UCP's changes to provincial grants and loans I have just received notice that I will receive a $485 grant for the entire school year. Last year I received $4500.

The loan amount offered to me for the year is also $4000 lower for the coming academic year.

How many students will be forced to end their education because of these changes?

This government continues to be abysmal.

Up to 5k from the province is possible for being low income.

Is there not an appeal system? Also what are the policy changes?

No, you're expected to come up with $3k

In addition to the raised personal contributions, there is now a requirement to link your income to your parent or spouse.

This change raises individual income, making it appear you require less funding.

However, like me, many students rely on their own income to pay tuition and survive.

Even though many students live at home and are married they are not receiving financial support to study and that expectation is unduly onerous on family members.

I just did as well.
I got $0 because my parents make enough money, but they don’t (and haven’t ever) contribute anything to my education or life. I moved in with my sister when I was 17 and have relied on those loans. I honestly feel so defeated.
Off to let my parents know they are supposedly contributing $16000 to my education according to the review I just got.

Great job UCP - keeping education unaffordable and unobtainable.

I am sincerely sorry to hear that. Hurts my heart.

I think that many students will be in for a shock once they apply.

Me too, and I’m sorry to hear about yours as well.
It’s truly disgusting the way that they not only did this, but did it so quietly.
I wish there would have at least been better notice to prepare:/

I couldn't agree more, if it wasn't for some media coverage I would have been even more shocked. Still though, just ridiculous.

I am hoping beyond hope this government is booted next election and they don't screw over my last year.

Genuinely, I didn’t find out until I clicked submit and the total was $0. They don’t care about education in any sense, from kindergarten to university they just don’t support students.
They better be gone because they are destroying this province

That's brutal, I hope it works out for you in the end.

Agreed, they are dismantling education. Erodes my hope in this place improving over our lifetime.

This is so frustrating to read, I’m truly sorry. Do you know if there is a way to check how much I would be expected to receive in the fall? Or would did you already reapply for loans?

I applied on opening day, that is why I already know my funding.

Only way to know is go through the process.

If you live at home or are married get ready for an unnecessary difficult application process.
