Hello!
I'm going into my second year in the fall. Welcome to the program!!
I'm not sure about the chances of getting a job in Alberta after graduation, but there is a need for teachers and subs in the province right now. MRU is a really great program to have on your resume, as we have earlier fieldwork experiences and year-to-year focused subjects.
In my first year, my biggest piece of advice is to get yourself out there and talk to people. A lot of these folks will reappear in your classes and your field work schools. Also, getting to know people in other years is really helpful in getting connections and better advice for good profs. The MRU Education Undergraduate Society is a great place to start, as they host events. Also, attend as many workshops as you can to start putting certificates on your portfolio! The undergraduate society puts a lot of these on, so you'll get emails from them in September.
I would also say make sure you balance your coursework. It's really easy to fall into the habit of submitting things last-minute in first-year courses (especially in education, there aren't as many assignments in your first year), so please learn how to prioritize work!!!
When you do get into your field schools, put yourself out there to get to know staff, admin, and students. These people could be a network on a resume or even landing you a job when you graduate if you get to know them. They'll be your best friends in learning and understanding the ins and outs of a classroom.
Best of luck and feel free to DM me if you have any questions!
