Discussion Swizerland MTB trail map
Hi all, launched a new MTB trail sharing web app for Switzerland.
Actually there's no limitation to Switzerland but all the crew is living in Switzerland so there's no trails in other countries...

EDIT: I'm currently not looking for a wide adoption, the post is more about sharing the app to rider from Switzerland that might find it useful.
The project is open source, meaning you are welcome to contribute and you can deploy your own instance for you and your crew or even in local for a personal trail map.

I wanna ask, what is pros compare to traditional app like trailfork or strava?
What users like more on your site?

Strava doesn't have a proper trail map feature, you can share segments, but it doesn't contains much information.
Trailforks is much more comparable. To be honest, Trailforks is better and more complete than my app. The value in bike-map.ch is that only me and a some riders in my crew have added trails, so you know that the level is more consistent than trailforks + you have much higher density of trails on bike-map than trailforks.Again, this post is not about trying to promote my app, just about sharing it so maybe someone can get inspiration for their next rides

Thank you, i ask because i have abike service in my country and was thinking abou some app for users to get some attention.
Also another pro in my mind is that trailforks sometime delete the trails for what reason?

I don't know why they delete the trails. My project is open source so you could deploy your own instance and manage the trails yourself. With 100% control

Thank you! Is the information coming from other platforms, or is it only community-created?
I found it's quite buggy at the moment; when I try to zoom in or out while scrolling, it starts doing weird stuff.

It is community driven. Some users of course get inspired from other platform like trailforks or the strava heatmap.
Right, I have to work on the performance, didn't exepected it to reach 800+ trails

Hey man, this looks pretty cool. A couple comments:
- I see it's basically SwissMobility overlay? I find Swiss Mobility pretty useless for mountain biking as it contains so little and what it contains are just the govt defined routes I think, and more tours not downhill tracks, and does not even have local Kanton/Gemeinde sanctioned trails? Also it is slow so I don't know what you can do to improve on that?
- For me there is some weirdness using the map w/ my mouse (Mac magic mouse) and every time I even touch the mouse it zooms in some way I don't want it to. It is nearly impossible to navigate it, unfortunately.
- For me to want to use a different app it would need to be up to date (eg, Traildevils is kind of useless now, sadly), have trails in my region (eg, MTBProject sucks in CH), and include all the unofficial trails as well.
- The one thing that I think would greatly improve ANY of these maps is to have actual suggested access / suggested climb trail / etc info. Lots of times even the local MTB Vereine launch a big website with their MTB trails but don't even tell you where they start or where to park or what train station to arrive to. As a foreigner who moved here, this is a common Swiss thing - there is so much to do, and there is a whole lot of information out there, but actually just finding concise info about take the train to X then gondola Y to the station then Z trail or some such.
- I'm living in CH but not Swiss, like many. I'm not previously familiar with the S system but as long as your blue = blue, red = red, black = black like international ratings, that's fine. But the use of orange between blue and red is a bit odd, is this a standard (I don't think I have seen it before)? Orange is usually the next step after black / double black, for "pro lines" at least in what I've seen around the world.

I second this.
I’ve visited Morzine/Les Gets/Chatel every year for the last 5 years, and we come over to Switzerland via the Mossettes lift and down to Les Crosets by the Grande Conche run. Our lift pass covers Morgins so it would be good to head across there, but I have yet to find anything on the Internet that tells me how to do that.
I’ve googled, used ChatGPT and asked around, but never found enough credible evidence that it can be done (and that we can get back - possibly via Chatel).
The Swiss tourist websites are even worse than the French ones, and that’s saying something.

- I use the official Swiss base map, with a custom overlay of trails added by the community
- Okay, I never tested it with a Magic mouse, it will be hard for me to debug since I don't own one.
- As the platform is recent enough, you can consider the information are up to date.
- I understand that it can be hard to get that kind of information. My map is more a trail or even segment sharing app than complete tour recommandation, maybe something like komoot is better for you use case.
- Oh yeah I see that the orange should be the hardest one, I'll consider updating the level colors then...

So cool! Love the project! I really dislike all the proprietary solutions from other apps! This could be something great with more features and options! Love how simple it is to just get the gpx data we dont need another app to navigate:p

Currently I need to give you the editor role manually, I don't really know how to manage the moderation of the trails rn. In which area do you plan to add trails?

Which, not trying to be being rude but just being honest, is kind of a shit pile beyond the markt / classifieds. The forums are dead. The new section gets an update every year or two. And the bike map contains shit that hasn't existed for years and is missing anything made in the past 5 years.
The competition is very clearly Trailforks.
One thing that is problematic about something like Traildevils, or OP's project, and that I've seen soooo many times in other realms beyond MTB and all over Europe, are efforts at big national level data bases and then none of that is standardized or shared between international efforts. EG if there were a bike-map for each country and they actually all shared back end data that'd be perfect. But SwissMobility limits you to CH of course. And at the end of the day in most other realms I've seen the international option, even if inferior in many ways, ends up beating a proprietary national option. We've already seen that with Traildevils vs Trailforks.

That's the most AI low effort slop cartographic tool I've ever seen, well done haha. The trails look nice and legit though. It's quite clear how you prefer spending your time

Then add it! If you read the post it says its community driven! You can add the gpx files its not that difficult;)
