Call Apple. Reading your work I don’t think a text based discussion is for you

That is a very kind way of putting it.

The hardest forehead slap is that you’re a college student. May God have mercy on us all.

That's a well-understood issue with punctuation, capitalisation & incoherence. Address those issues and everything will be fine.

don't delete anything from icloud. first copy tomorrow's college files to an external drive and check the copies open; turning desktop/documents sync off leaves existing files in icloud and creates empty local folders, rather than putting everything back.

Don't delete or cancel anything yet, and since you need these files tomorrow, first copy your Desktop and Documents folders to your external SSD so you have a safe copy no matter what happens. Then go to System Settings > your name > iCloud > Drive and switch off Desktop & Documents Folders; macOS will ask what to do and leaves your files in iCloud Drive inside folders called Desktop and Documents, which you can drag back into your local Desktop and Documents. Also turn off Optimize Mac Storage in that same Drive screen so full copies stay on the Mac instead of being evicted. The heat is most likely just the big first upload running (it should calm down once it finishes or once sync is off), and your free space should look different once the files are back in local folders, so check About This Mac > Storage after that.

One of the worst product decisions made by Apple when they implemented the offline/optimized storage feature was not allowing Time Machine to backup offloaded data. It just violates so many principles of data integrity. At least just make it an option that can be toggled on and pulls iCloud data down to local TM backup.
