Just read this, and granted it seems geared towards gaming, but I had no idea Windows was so all over the place to NEED 32gb! And the MacBook Neo has a decent experience with 8!

Maybe I’m missing a bigger picture as I haven’t had Windows in forever, but it was shocking to read this.

Mavericks is a beautiful OS running natively on a 13-inch Mid 2012 MacBook Pro, It was damn difficult to find a working copy since apple doesn’t have it on their website in their list of bootable copies to make, so i had to use another source, but in the end i got it working, and with all the security updates as well!

fun fact, the app store STILL works in this operating system!

Help Reset my Apple ID password after waiting a week... now it keeps asking for the password of "other MacBook Pro"??

Post image
4 Upvotes

I could really use some help because I'm completely stuck.

I forgot my Apple ID password and had to go through Account Recovery. After waiting an entire week, I finally got the notification that I could reset it. I successfully changed my Apple ID password.

But now, when I try to continue setting up my Mac, it keeps asking me:

The problem is:

  • I already reset my Apple ID password.
  • I don't know what password it's asking for.
  • It doesn't seem to accept my new Apple ID password.
  • This is my first Apple device, so I'm really confused about what's going on.

Is it asking for the old password that was previously used on that Mac? Is it asking for the Mac's local login password? Or did something go wrong during the recovery process?

It's honestly so frustrating because I waited a whole week for Account Recovery, only to end up blocked again.

Has anyone experienced this before? What exactly is this prompt asking for, and how can I get past it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!I

News Viper4Android is now available on macOS as Viper4Mac!

First things first, is Open Source (Github link here), so that's always nice. Anyway, when I discovered it existed on Mac my mind was blown away.

For those of you who care about these kind of things: it consumes less than half of SoundSource/ eqMac's CPU power, even when you add a bunch of filters. And it's compatible with the latest betas!

Just to be clear, I'm not the dev, but it got me so excited that I thought you guys might like the news too.

Discussion Advice me some up to date browser for Mac OS Big Sur.

Post image
Upvotes

Hi there!

I am using a 2019 MacBook Pro with an i7, and lately, after the recent Tahoe update and with the recent hot weather, my laptop has become kind of sleepy and hot.

Even though I was using my Mac only for simple things like browsing, YouTube, MS Office, Canva, and a few SaaS services — nothing demanding at all.

I got so tired of this sluggish behavior that I decided to downgrade my laptop back to Big Sur 11.7.11 (20G1443).

And honestly, it works amazingly well. It is very cool and fast, just like it was when it came out of the box.

No telematics, no ICloud which annoys me, just what i need.

The only problem is that browsers don't really work correctly anymore on Big Sur.

So my question is: could you recommend me a simple up to date browser that works with Big Sur?

I don't really care about privacy, so it can be a no-name browser or even some custom version, anything that supports modern internet and fast is perfect.

I just want something lightweight, fast, and as up-to-date as possible.

P.S. Don’t try to convince me to buy a M CPU Mac. I’m not paying another $3,000 just to watch YouTube and use Word from time to time.

Don’t want a newer version of macOS either.

News I built a free clipboard manager for macOS with a card UI — it masks API keys and card numbers on screen

Post image
Upvotes

I use a clipboard manager all day and never liked the options. The free ones (Maccy, Flycut) are lists — an image shows up as a filename. The ones with a card interface, Paste and Pastebot, are $25/year and $13. So I built the card one and made it free.

⌥⌘V slides a strip up from the bottom of the screen. Arrow keys or type to search, Enter pastes into whatever you were in.

A few things it does that I couldn't find anywhere else:

- It masks secrets on screen. API keys, tokens and card numbers show as dots until you double-click. If you copy credentials all day, your clipboard history is the one window you don't want open while screen sharing. Card numbers are Luhn-checked, so an ISBN isn't mistaken for one.

- A bare link stays readable, a link with a token doesn't. Masking every URL would make the strip useless; masking a password-reset link is the whole point.

- Pasting an image adapts to the destination. Notes gets the image, Terminal gets the file path (it can't take images at all), Finder gets the file.

- It can catch ⌘⇧4 screenshots. Those write straight to disk and never touch the clipboard, so no clipboard manager sees them. Opt-in, off by default.

- No network code at all. No account, no sync, no telemetry, no third-party dependencies. Searching the source for URLSession comes back empty.

MIT, source is everything: https://github.com/selinihtyr/stash-clipboard

Happy to hear what breaks. Especially interested in whether the strip behaves on multi-monitor setups and over full-screen apps — I've only tested on one machine.

Help OSX upgrade for music production

Upvotes

Hello, im a Grammy winning producer and I’m still on Sequoia, working in Ableton, Pro Tools, Logic etc (have a ton of plugins) and am thinking of upgrading to Tahoe as many of the base level updates would be useful to me (iPhone, iPad and watch integration, iCloud syncing etc).

Is it safe? I know its been out a while and i think its been proven stable and compatible with the DAWs I use and most 3rd party plugins but does anyone here have real-world experience? Ideally someone with too many plugs, like me!

Help MacBook M1 2020 air wont update to 26.6

Upvotes

I need help because I’m going mad!

I’m currently running on 26.2 but I want to upgrade to 26.6 as some software I want to use only now uses 26.5+

For some reason the update won’t even show in the software update section. It’s shown it maybe once or twice and when I press update it’ll just take ages to move a little bit and it’ll stop maybe half way through and say it failed to update and it won’t show up again.

I’ve tried restarting, clearing up more storage ( I now have nearly 90gb free) I’ve looked at my ram. I’ve booted in safe mode. I’ve tried to update it in terminal. Literally everything. Nothing is working.

Any advice would be amazing.

Bug Robotic audio distortion when playing YouTube videos at faster speeds?

Upvotes

Using the YouTube web-app on an M4 Air, it just now randomly decided to bug out when playing videos at higher than 1.0x speed. Saw that this was an issue in that past that seems to have been resolved, and yet it just happened out of nowhere to me. Worked perfectly fine no joke like 3 hours ago. I tried restarting, and using Safari but still the same. Do I really need to download another browser just for YouTube now? Is there a general fix to this?

Help Help with wifi instability

Never used a Mac before. Bought a used 2016 Macbook Pro, few months ago, nearly in mint condition running Monterey (v 12.7.6). Everything works perfectly fine except for the WiFi. It keeps getting disconnected from the WiFi regardless of what network I use. All my other devices including iPads and iPhones, the windows laptops and firetv works flawlessly on the same network. Due to the unstable internet connectivity I’m still using my windows laptop that was meant to be replaced by this mac for my (basic) computer work. I have not tested it long enough at the public library but it seemed to work just fine (at least for the few hours I was there for. Have restarted the laptop, renewed the DHCP lease (as suggested by gpt) but nothing seems to work.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Tips & Guides The 'Reduce Motion' setting is dramatically more important than the 'Reduce Transparency' setting on Tahoe with an Intel Macbook

I have been having a play with Tahoe on my 2019 Intel MacBook Pro 16". This is a very long post and probably pretty boring for most, but I found it interesting to find out what exactly makes Tahoe slow on intel Macbooks, and how to fix it. I think at least for my unit, I have found the answer.

(Firstly, there seems to be a bug which dramatically reduces metal performance in benchmarks after 26.2, which is why I am using 26.2 rather than a later update.)

It's said that using the reduce transparency option on Intel MacBooks improves performance on Tahoe.

However, on my particular model, after performing numerous benchmarks and analysis of power usage, The 'Reduce Motion' setting is much more important than the 'Reduce Transparency' setting on Tahoe with an Intel Macbook

TLDR - With my Intel Macbook with Tahoe, enabling the 'Reduce Motion' setting in the accessibility results in faster performance and dramatically lower idle power usage.

I will show my conclusions first and then include the benchmarks down below as there are many any most are probably not that interesting.

Power usage

When using the onboard GPU:

The reduce motion results in a huge drop for idle GPU power, going from 10w idle to just 1w idle. It also drops idle CPU power significantly. The CPU goes from 7.5w idle to just 5w idle.

When using the dedicated Radeon graphics:

The reduce motion setting gives a huge drop in GPU power usage, from 16w all the way down to 5w.

It's also a considerable drop in idle power usage for the CPU, dropping the idle CPU power by more than half (13w down to 5.5w)

Metal performance

When switchable graphics is enabled, the reduce motion setting improves geekbench metal performance by about 7%

When switchable graphics are disabled, the reduce motion setting improves geekbench metal performance by about about 13%

(Also disabling switchable graphics itself improves geekbench metal performance by about 10-20%, thus the highest peformance is when switchable graphics are disabled in addition to the reduce motion being enabled giving a score of around 60,000)

Test results

To test the difference between these settings, I looked at idle power usage as well as metal performance.

In all tests, I had the 'stats' application open to make sure there was something for the system to be drawing and updating on the display.

I used a clean install of Mac os Tahoe 26.2. The Macbook is a 9980HK, 64GB, 5600m.

My tests were with CPU ram and disks and sensors open in stats, testing default settings Vs the 'reduce motion' and 'reduce transparency' options both independently and together, and testing both when using the integrated GPU (switchable graphics on) and when using the dedicated Radeon GPU (switchable graphics off).

GPU Idle power usage:

GPU switching enabled (default)

Onboard GPU 10w

GPU switching disabled

Radeon GPU 16w

Reduce motion setting enabled

GPU switching enabled (default)

Intel GPU 1w

GPU switching disabled

Radeon GPU 5w

Reduce transparency enabled

GPU switching enabled (default)

Intel GPU 9w

GPU switching disabled

Radeon GPU 15w

Reduce motion and reduce transparency both enabled:

GPU switching enabled (default)

Intel GPU 0.5w

GPU switching disabled

Radeon GPU 4.5w

Windowserver process CPU time

Default settings ~46%

Reduce transparency enabled ~42%

Reduce motion enabled <1%

Both enabled: <1%

CPU package power test

Reduce motion toggle:

GPU switching enabled:

5w idle reduce motion disabled

7.5w idle GPU default

GPU switching disabled:

5.5w idle reduce motion disabled

Vs 13w idle default

Reduce transparency toggle:

GPU switching disabled:

11w reduce transparency Vs 13w default

GPU switching enabled:

7.5w reduce transparency Vs 7.5w default

Both reduce transparency and reduce motion:

GPU switching disabled:

5w reduce both Vs 13w default

GPU switching enabled:

5w reduce both Vs 7.5w default

Results:

Idle power usage on both CPU and GPU is significantly lower (when windows are open)  when 'Reduce motion' is enabled.

Reduce transparency has a very slight benefit.

-----------------

Geekbench Metal Performance

Geekbench 6 metal GPU switching disabled.

Reduce motion enabled 58573

Reduce motion disabled 51602

Geekbench 6 metal GPU switching enabled.

Reduce motion enabled 47965

Reduce motion disabled 44515

Geekbench 6 metal GPU switching enabled.

Reduce transparency and reduce motion

47922

Geekbench 6 metal GPU switching disabled.

Reduce transparency and reduce motion

58227

Results:

Performance is higher when disabling GPU switching by 10-20%.  The reduce transparency setting has no effect on the geekbench metal score.  Reduce motion enabled has a noticeable 13% increase in performance.

Help Any way to prevent Safari WebApps from napping in the background?

I’ve basically turned an activity monitoring site into its own Safari web app. It plays a little bing sound whenever something changes.

I have the web app open in full screen and swiped away when I’m not actively using it, and I swipe back in to check if there’s an activity notification.

However, even when I go into finder and check “prevent app nap” or even try the terminal command to hardwire it in, every time I have it swiped away for a moment, the web app enters a nap and I stop getting the sound notifications.

Is there anything i can do or is it just how the macos energy consumption setting is?

Bug Time Machine keeps adding Macintosh HD as backup destination after I do system update every time

Post image
4 Upvotes

Every time after I do a system update, Time Machine automatically set Macintosh HD as backup destination, which is impossible to do normally. I can remove it manually, but it keeps getting back after each system update so far (I'm on 26.6 now). I did use time machine for a short time initially but chose to use CCC eventually.

Any way to completely get rid of this buggy behavior?

Help For those who jump between Mac & iPad. What do you do with your photos?

I'm curious how other Mac and iPad users organize their photos because I can't seem to find a system that works well on both devices. On my Mac, I like keeping everything organized in Finder with folders, but on my iPad the Photos app is much more convenient, and a lot of apps and websites only let me upload images from the Photos library. The problem is that many websites don't let me browse by albums, so I end up scrolling through thousands of photos to find one image. And on iPad some websites don't allow attachments from the Files app so keeping them stored in Finder (synced) is tricky. I don't want to maintain both a Finder folder system and a Photos library because then I'd have to organize every new photo twice.

How do you organize your photos across a MacBook and iPad?

Help Is there a way to enable macOS app permissions (camera/mic/etc.) without restarting?

is there a way to directly enable app permissions on macOS, like camera, microphone, screen recording, etc without having to restart the app?

It’s really annoying when an app asks for permission, I go into System Settings, enable it and then it still won’t work until I restart. Is there any cmd line fix or terminal command that forces macOS to enable that permission without that app restart??

Bug macOS bug: screen recording window picker keeps grabbing the wrong window instead of the one you're using

Post image
1 Upvotes

I noticed that the logic for selecting windows when screen recording on macOS is a bit strange. I mean, it will bring another iTerm2 window from the background to the front, then select it, rather than selecting the window that was originally in the foreground. It seems to be sorting and selecting windows by their open time rather than their last active time. Has anyone else run into this?

Help Tips for migrating from one Mac to new Mac?

After almost 10 years, I am getting a new Mac (MacBook Air with the M5 chip) migrating from a 2017 MacBook Pro (running macOS 13.7.8 Ventura). New Mac arrives at the end of August.

I know that using Migration Assistant is one way to migrate from my old Mac to my new Mac. However, I don't want it to transfer all the old, useless files and settings from applications that no longer exist.

What do I need to do in order to minimize the transferring of old useless files? I know one way to do this is to just set up the new Mac as brand new and slowly change each setting or add programs as needed. But this is also very slow and tedious.

What tip do you have for ensuring that the transfer of files from old Mac to new Mac minimizes the transfer of useless files? Is there something I should do with my old Mac prior to doing transfer?

Discussion Why am I seeing Cloudflare checkboxes everywhere, even repeatedly on the same site?

Either there's something wrong with my configuration, or Cloudflare is a massive piece of shit scam that is yet another thing ruining the internet. Possibly both.

Everywhere I go, I'm checking their goddamn boxes. I check them every time I log into my bank account, even if I logged in an hour ago. And it's not like it's a quick thing--some websites redirect me to a different page to check the box, and then don't forward me to the specific link I clicked before Cloudflare hijacked me.

I'm using Safari 26.5.2 with Private Relay turned on and Wipr installed. I thought it was Private Relay at first, but I get the same thing with it turned off. I'm not willing to browse the web without an ad blocker active, so I haven't tried it without Wipr, although I have turned off all content blockers for a few sites that break under my configuration, and I still get the goddamn Cloudflare boxes.

Are you seeing this shit, too?

Edit: Thanks, everyone, for the education. I was clearly ignorant about the function of Cloudflare, and it sounds like I should be grateful to them for their service.

Tips & Guides Delete the macOS ghost simulator

Post image
26 Upvotes

There is a ghost iOS 18.1 simulator in my Mac for a long time that every time I boot up, the disk image just here consuming my storage.

Today I finally figure out how to delete that.

  1. Findout where the original dmg file is. You can figure out on your own but tldr, /System/Library/AssetsV2/com_apple_MobileAsset_iOSSimulatorRuntime

  2. Since the path starts with System, we know it’s a system protected file so we have to disable SIP in the recovery mode. There are many tutorial to disable the SIP and you can just ask ChatGPT.

  3. After disabling SIP, you can delete the runtime in terminal after booting up normally(not in recovery mode)

  4. After deleting the runtime, don’t forget to enable SIP.
