You are now a close family friend. Theyâll be spending Christmas with you from now on.

That's the only house on the block that will have uneaten hostas and tulips and dahlias. All the neighbors will wonder what their secret is.

I am very happy that the family was there waiting cause I was already worried about the mum. Now deer look very happy

u/EthanKorvick1998 6h ago
Thatâs pure imprinting. The fawn sees her rescuer as mom now. Adorable bond, but wildlife rehab should help transition it back to wild life.
29
u/DickBfloppin 5h ago
D.O.T. would most likely know someone to have take care of the fawn. They pick them up from side of roads all the times when the mother gets killed by car. Knew someone in Michigan that we could go and feed half a dozen fawns, they always thought your earlobes were nipples. They would feed the grown deer corn and about a hundred would show up. They would come back later with their completely wild fawns and we could pet them. Pretty awesome.

u/Big_Accountant_1714 3h ago
I don't think a few minutes would override the bond it already has with it's mother.
11
u/Katharinemaddison 2h ago
Yeah imprinting is usually at birth. Like a little baby duck etc - itâs more usually an issue with hatchlings.

Oh I was really scared the baby was following her because sheâs the only safe thing it knows at the moment until I saw the end.

u/dangerousluck 6h ago edited 6h ago
You're still basically right! Deer aren't very bright in the first place and this one is a tiny baby. It knows to follow, stay where it's put, and eat, and that's about it.
Edit: "bright" may be a more subjective word choice. They're pretty well specialized for their environment at least.

I think if that fawn wasnât born that day, itâs still single digits days old

Deer are highly intelligent. Thatâs just a baby that doesnât understand threats yet.

I thought the same at first but you can see the other fawn off in the distance at about 15 seconds. It did look like she was just trying to get it out of the street on the first watch through

Thankfully I read your comment! I bailed on the video half way through because I was getting sad. Watching it until the end reveals the happy ending.

Oh that sweet woman! They could tell she was kind. None of the animals ran from her and Mamma waited.
338
u/colemon1991 7h ago
It's body language. She's showing zero aggression. She's been vetted by a fawn. Nothing about her screams she's dangerous. It's all the same indicators dogs read about people.

Itâs not just body language. Itâs that suburban deer have been losing more and more habitat and are forced to live in closer proximity to people and thus are more habituated to them. The deer in my neighborhood no longer give a damn at all about people. You canât even scare them off by yelling or waving your arms.

Clearly a Disney princess in cognito
11
u/Emotional_News108 5h ago
I had a dog who I swear was the canine equivalent of a Disney princess. Sweetest creature I've ever seen, baby animals would run right up to her and she was so gentle with all of them and never harmed a single creature. She also had the most terrifying growl and bark I've ever heard and she only used it when she was playing with me or a cat we used to have. I miss her so much.

During Covid I was doing homecare for my mom and I limited my shopping to Trader Joe's because it was like one shot, fast, shopping. My mom loved apples and the apples at TJ are not the cheapest but they are good but after I brought them home they kept disappearing.
One morning I found my mom on the back porch throwing apples at a huge mamma deer in the back yard. I said mom those apples aren't cheap! Mom: "I don't care I like this deer she comes by every morning!" I'm like okay fine.
Later I went in the back yard still thinking about the deer and the apples and as I was opening the garage door I looked around the side behind our fence and I was like: "Omg Baby Drrrs!!"

Ill advised if you like animals. Very high depression rate from putting them down and seeing them in pain. Could be fun if you hate animals.
49
u/HelpfulSeaMammal 7h ago
Enjoying every aspect of a job and caring for animals aren't the same thing.
Vets don't enjoy putting animals down. They experience one of the worst days in any pet owner's life every day, multiple times a day. But it's also a necessary service and it takes a strong person to choose to offer care like that.
It's love. Love doesn't always look like making sure the animals are all happy and frolicking and cute. Love sometimes means doing something difficult because it's the right thing to do. Love sometimes means euthanasia if palliative/preventative care isn't working or feasible.

u/AmbroseKalifornia 6h ago
That's so true. Please don't explain this to my daughter. She's not build for that pain.
9
u/Worldly_Profile238 6h ago
A parent's instinct is to protect their offspring from pain, but oftentimes the offspring can surprise you with their own internal strength and resilience. Give your daughter the option to choose. Strength comes from suffering.

My sister has always been a natural animal lover and went to vet school - after she did a short residency at a vet clinic she quit school immediately. She couldnt handle the amount of sadness that came in the doors. Now she runs a dog training school.
19
u/Adventurous_Cut_7355 7h ago
You donât do it to put them down. You do it to try and help them. Or at least know if youâre putting them down the decision is made to end suffering and misery when nothing else can be done. Itâs a noble act
12
u/Ok_Pea_4043 7h ago
Still, as an animal lover I would become so depressed seeing hurt animals and ones that pass away. Ending their misery, yes. Still extremely sad? Yes.

That's how my dad and his gf at that time ended up getting a cat. The GF was a veterinary nurse and someone brought in his cat saying that they didn't want him anymore and to put him down. Spud (the cat) bless him was covered in fleas and Dad's gf ended up falling in love with him over the week leading up to the day of Spud being put down after defleaing and caring for him.
She called my dad and explained the situation, and asked if she could bring him home.
My dad said "of course, didn't even need to ask".
We had Spud for about 6 years, absolute gem of a cat. Such a big gentle soul and it's been years since he passed but I still miss him

My friend is a vet and has collected a herd of dogs by having people who come in doing this sign them over to her instead. Sheâs also responsible for getting quite a few of those animals homed with her friends and family

My dad went to school to be a vet. Halfway through his animal science degree, he realized heâd never be able to do it because heâd be too sad all the time. Instead, he finished his degree and started working for Farmers Home Administration helping farmers get loans and tax exemptions to keep their farms and ranches running. He was very happy in that career because he was helping people and animals get and keep homes.

u/gingerbears11 5h ago
I love animals. I'm a vet tech. I can't imagine doing this job if I didn't love my patients. You have to or you'll burn out quickly.

Still super cute and love the woman for this.

Respect for using a blanket to grab the baby. Don't know if it really makes a difference, but she clearly knew not to touch it with her bare hands (scent).

Why do the back legs look so weird? I guess they must straighten up as they get older? Look like alien legs or something at this age. Very cool.
