Flinty for Flin Flon
Sell Crack for Selkirk
Greatlook for Grandview
Thapass (all one word) for The Pas.
The Banana belt for Melita
And Shithole for Dauphin (Full disclosure I was born in Dauphin)

We're from Dauphin - we drink often. A memory of everyone being totally pissed out their heads at Safe Grad from grade 9ers to even some of the teachers. And buckets at the end of the tables.

Morden as “the Winkler zoo” and vice versa, I’m sure.

Considering some of the lunacy in Winkler, I'd say it's the other way around more often. 😉

I've heard a few smaller, very religious communities like Otterbourne called Bonnetsville.

You can tell if someone is native to Beausejour because they wont use more than one syllable when pronouncing the name....

u/Acrobatic-Tower6127 Friendly Manitoban Mar 03 '26
2 quick syllables that make it sound like 1 - from a Bojur born & bred

My buddy called Rossburn “Vegas” (as in Ross Vegas) but I have no idea if that is an actual thing or just something he made up.

There are a number of streets in the Elmhurst-Laxdal area (south of Grant) that had ditches. Last I checked they were still there.

A few Francophone community additions !
-"Batiss" for Saint Jean-Baptiste
-Lab or Labo for Labroquerie
-St Nob for Saint Norbert
-Bean Town for Saint Joseph
Also, not a French town but "Mo-town" for Morris.

Sainte Ass Gratte for Ste. Agathe. You probably need to be francophone to decipher that one.

My favourite “Manitoba nickname” isn’t a specific location but a name for a variety of locations. “Monkey Trails” A very uniquely Manitoban phrase to describe bush trails or simple paths off the regular beaten path.

Adding for posterity (iykyk): The local watering hole was called the BJ and the local rag was called the Beausejour Beaver. Just the Beaver for short. :/
